A phylogenetic comparative analysis of geographic variation in body size of an obligately hibernating marmotine species (Anatolian ground squirrels, Spermophilus xanthoprymnus) is presented in relation to environmental variables that pertain to four principal hypotheses (heat conservation, heat dissipation, primary productivity, and seasonality hypotheses). Adult Anatolian ground squirrels (78 males and 90 females) were collected from ten geographic localities in Anatolia for use in morphometric analyses. First, the study tested whether significant variation in body size occurs over the geographic range of S. xanthoprymnus. Then, to understand the possible cause(s) of the observed pattern of geographic variation in body size of Anatolian ground squirrels, four hypotheses were tested, separately and simultaneously, using a phylogenetic comparative method. Overall, food availability (primary productivity hypothesis) and, especially in males, over‐winter fasting endurance (seasonality hypothesis) are likely the primary underlying mechanisms generating the observed pattern of increasing body size towards colder, more seasonal environments, with higher summer precipitation and productivity (or a Bergmannian size pattern). © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 100 , 695–710.  相似文献

Following dorsal root crush, the lesioned axons regenerate in the peripheral compartment of the dorsal root, but stop at the boundary between the peripheral and the central nervous system, the dorsal root transitional zone. We have previously shown that fibres from human fetal dorsal root ganglia grafted to adult rat hosts are able to grow into the spinal cord, but were not able to specify the route taken by the ingrowing fibres. In this study we have challenged the dorsal root transitional zone astrocyte boundary with human dorsal root ganglion transplants from 5–8-week-old embryos. By tracing immunolabelled human fibres in serial sections, we found that fibres consistently grow around the dorsal root transitional zone astrocytes in laminin-rich peripheral surroundings, and extend into the host rat spinal cord along blood vessels, either into deep or superficial laminae of the dorsal horn, or into the dorsal funiculus. Human fibres that did not have access to blood vessels grew on the spinal cord surface. These findings indicate, that in spite of a substantial growth capacity by axons from human embryonic dorsal root ganglion cells as well as their tolerance to non-permissive factors in the mature mammalian CNS, these axons are still sensitive to the repellent effects of astrocytes of the mature dorsal root transitional zone. Colonization history in Fennoscandian rodents   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Fennoscandia probably constitutes one of the best places on earth to study faunal history. During the height of the most recent glacial period Fennoscandia was completely covered with ice. Thus, the majority of extant species must originate from ancestors who survived the latest glaciation in non-glaciated areas outside Fennoscandia. Moreover, the geography and geological history of Fennoscandia suggests that post-glacial recolonization by land mammals must have been restricted to specific routes in time and space. Phylogeographic surveys of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation in Fennoscandian rodents have demonstrated that glacial history and patterns of post-glacial colonization have played a major role in shaping present day patterns of genetic differentiation within species. Thus, the genetic imprints of historical demographic conditions and vicariant geographic events have been retained within species and can be used to infer the history of populations. The field vole (Microtus agrestis) is used to illustrate these data and processes. Comparisons are made with phylogeographic surveys of the bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus) , the eastern house mouse (Mus musculus) and the wood lemming (Myopus schisticolor) as well as a few other species for which less extensive studies have been performed. The main patterns of post-glacial colonization of Fennoscandia by rodents are described. The effects of timing and patterns of colonization on contemporary population genetic structure and levels of genetic variation are discussed. Specifically, the effects of hybridization and introgression as well as founder events and bottlenecks are explored.  相似文献

Embryogenic cell lines ofPicea abieswere categorized into twogroups, A and B, based on the morphology of the somatic embryosand the ability of the somatic embryos to proceed through amaturation process when treated with ABA. Group A embryos hada distinct, densely-packed embryonic region whereas group Bembryos had loosely packed cells in their embryonic region.Embryo morphology was shown to be regulated by changes in theplant growth regulators in the culture medium. Treatment withN6-benzyladenine stimulated embryos to develop large embryonicregions. The morphology of somatic embryos and especially thatof the embryonic regions was correlated with the presence ofspecific extracellular proteins. Only somatic embryos with denselypacked cells in the embryonic regions secreted proteins withrelative molecular weights of 28, 66 and 85kD. The extracellularprotein of 28kD was isolated and the first 21 amino acids inthe N-terminus were identified. These showed 52–57% identitywith the N-terminal sequence conserved among members of a proteinfamily which includes zeamatin and which have been shown tobe involved in plant anti-fungal mechanisms. Immunological studiesof extracellular chitinases and zeamatin-like proteins, as wellas of activity of extracellular peroxidase, revealed a closecorrelation between the presence of specific chitinases andembryo morphology. Yeast was processed by means of different technical drying procedures, heating in water suspension, and mechanical disintegration. The influence on the ultrastructure, the nutritive value and on the availability of the cell nitrogen-containing compounds to chemical extractants was studied. On micrographs no cell wall disrupture could be observed after any of the heat treatments. The internal cell structure was affected at the higher temperatures. After drum drying this structure was destroyed to a large extent. The heat treatments increased the nutritive value compared to unheated yeast cells but did not increase the availability of the cell content to chemical extractants. Mechanical disintegration increased both the nutritive value and the availability to chemical extractants. Heat processes and mechanical disintegration give high nutritive value to the yeast. Mechanical disintegration is advantageous when processing steps such as extraction with chemicals are necessary for obtaining specific protein products.  相似文献
