The usefulness of nutritional indices and classifications in predicting the death of children under 5 years old was evaluated by comparing measurements of 34 children with diarrhoea who died in a Dhaka hospital with those of 318 patients who were discharged in a satisfactory condition. In a logistic regression analysis mid-upper arm circumference was found to be as effective as other nutritional indices in predicting death. Combinations of different indices did not improve the prediction. Arm circumference might be preferable to more complex criteria for predicting the death of malnourished children.  相似文献

Cannaceae seeds have been analysed regarding seed coat structure, germination and macromolecular composition of the seed coats. Data of several mass spectrometric techniques were combined with those of microscopic and histochemical techniques to acquire insight into the functions of the seed coat.Cannaceae seeds have an exotestal layer of Malpighian cells with a hydrophobic and a hydrophilic part. The hydrophobic part is mainly responsible for the impermeability of the seed and contains silica, callose, lignin as water repellent substances. Water can only enter the seed after a certain temperature-induced opening of an imbibition lid. During imbibition the hydrophilic part of the Malpighian cells swells and the seed coat ruptures due to differences in pressure in the upper and lower part of the Malpighian cells.  相似文献

Background  

There is much discourse in healthcare about the importance of client-centred rehabilitation, however in the realm of community-based therapy post-stroke there has been little investigation into the efficacy of goal-directed practice that reflects patients' valued activities. In addition, the effect of active involvement of carers in such a rehabilitation process and their subsequent contribution to functional and emotional recovery post-stroke is unclear. In community based rehabilitation, interventions based on patients' perceived needs may be more likely to alter such outcomes. In this paper, we describe the methodology of a randomised controlled trial of an integrated approach to facilitating patient goal achievement in the first year post-stroke. The effectiveness of this intervention in reducing the severity of post-stroke depression, improving participation status and health-related quality of life is examined. Summary In this study we document the development of the phytomelan layer in the outer epidermis of the outer integument ofGasteria verrucosa. Phytomelan has been described as a black, melanin-like substance which is chemically very inert. Using histochemical techniques we show that phytomelan development in the cell wall can be divided into three stages. The first stage is deposition of a callosic layer against the tangential wall, with simultaneous thickening of the adjacent parts of the radial walls. The second stage is the conversion of this callosic wall, which we call a tertiary wall, into a noncallosic inner and outer layer. The inner layer stains predominantly for cellulose and a little for pectin. The outer layer is of unknown composition, since it did not react with the stains that were used. In the third stage the outer tertiary layer becomes black, the phytomelan. The callosic wall deposited in the first developmental stage seems to function as a carbohydrate source and as a mould for the tertiary cell wall. The conversion of the callose in the second stage might be the result of penetration of substances which react with callose. All the components for phytomelan seem to be present in the outer layer before the conversion. In order to investigate the genetic structure in an endangered Alpine plant (Eryngium alpinum L.), we developed microsatellites. Two different approaches were used: an enrichment protocol and the classical technique of hybridization on nylon membranes. We identified 25 loci, 13 of which revealed to be polymorphic. The polymorphism was rather low (2–6 alleles; HE = 0.49 ± 0.16), probably due to the short size of microsatellites (6–10 dinucleotide repeats) and to the fine spatial scale investigated. However, these markers are expected to provide a new insight about the genetic processes at work within and among E. alpinum populations.  相似文献

Plant water‐use efficiency (WUE, the carbon gained through photosynthesis per unit of water lost through transpiration) is a tracer of the plant physiological controls on the exchange of water and carbon dioxide between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere. At the leaf level, rising CO2 concentrations tend to increase carbon uptake (in the absence of other limitations) and to reduce stomatal conductance, both effects leading to an increase in leaf WUE. At the ecosystem level, indirect effects (e.g. increased leaf area index, soil water savings) may amplify or dampen the direct effect of CO2. Thus, the extent to which changes in leaf WUE translate to changes at the ecosystem scale remains unclear. The differences in the magnitude of increase in leaf versus ecosystem WUE as reported by several studies are much larger than would be expected with current understanding of tree physiology and scaling, indicating unresolved issues. Moreover, current vegetation models produce inconsistent and often unrealistic magnitudes and patterns of variability in leaf and ecosystem WUE, calling for a better assessment of the underlying approaches. Here, we review the causes of variations in observed and modelled historical trends in WUE over the continuum of scales from leaf to ecosystem, including methodological issues, with the aim of elucidating the reasons for discrepancies observed within and across spatial scales. We emphasize that even though physiological responses to changing environmental drivers should be interpreted differently depending on the observational scale, there are large uncertainties in each data set which are often underestimated. Assumptions made by the vegetation models about the main processes influencing WUE strongly impact the modelled historical trends. We provide recommendations for improving long‐term observation‐based estimates of WUE that will better inform the representation of WUE in vegetation models.  相似文献

Vascular endothelial cells (EC) are one of the initial cells exposed to decreases in blood oxygen tension. Bovine EC respond not only by altering secretion of vasoactive, mitogenic, and thrombogenic substances, but also by developing adaptive mechanisms in order to survive acute and chronic hypoxic exposures. EC exposed to hypoxia in vitro upregulate a unique set of stress proteins of Mr 34, 36, 39, 47, and 56 kD. Previous studies have shown that these proteins are cell associated, upregulated in a time and oxygen-concentration dependent manner, and are distinct from heat shock (HSPs) and glucose-regulated proteins (GRPs). To further characterize these hypoxia-associated proteins (HAPs), we investigated their upregulation in human EC from various vascular beds and compared this to possible HAP upregulation in other cell types. Human aortic, pulmonary artery, and microvascular EC upregulated the same set of proteins in response to hypoxia. In comparison, neither lung fibroblasts, pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells, pulmonary alveolar type II cells, nor renal tubular epithelial cells upregulated proteins of these Mr. Instead, most of these cell types induced synthesis of proteins of Mrs corresponding to either HSPs, GRPs, or both. Further studies demonstrated that exposure of EC to related stresses such as cyanide, 2-deoxyglucose, hydrogen peroxide, dithiothreitol, and glucose deprivation did not cause upregulation of HAPs. Evaluation of cellular damage during hypoxia using phase-contrast microscopy, trypan blue exclusion, chromium release, and adherent cell counts showed that EC survived longer with less damage than any of the above cell types. The induction of HAPs, and the lack of induction of HSPs or GRPs, by EC in response to hypoxia may be related to their unique ability to tolerate hypoxia for prolonged periods. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Hypoxic regulation of endothelial glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The glycolytic enzyme glyceraldehyde-3-phosphatedehydrogenase (GAPDH) is induced by hypoxia in endothelial cells (EC).To define the mechanisms by which GAPDH is regulated by hypoxia, ECwere exposed to cobalt, other transition metals, carbon monoxide (CO),deferoxamine, or cycloheximide in the presence or absence of hypoxia for 24 h, and GAPDH protein and mRNA levels were measured. GAPDH was induced in cells by the transition metals cobalt, nickel, andmanganese and by deferoxamine, and GAPDH mRNA induction by hypoxia wasblocked by cycloheximide. GAPDH induction by hypoxia, unlike that ofother hypoxia-regulated genes, was not inhibited by CO or by4,6-dioxoheptanoic acid, an inhibitor of heme synthesis. GAPDHinduction was not altered by mediators of protein phosphorylation, acalcium channel blocker, a calcium ionophore, or alterations in redoxstate. GAPDH induction by hypoxia or transitional metals was partiallyblocked by sodium nitroprusside but was not altered by the inhibitor ofnitric oxide synthaseN -nitro-L-arginine. Thesefindings suggest that GAPDH induction by hypoxia in EC occurs viamechanisms other than those involved in other hypoxia-responsivesystems.
