Analysis of work done by the secretaries attached to one medical unit in a general hospital showed that much was discretionary in character and entailed making decisions. Work in the unit was made easier and more efficient by this intelligent use of initiative by the secretaries. At present the pay given to medical secretaries in hospital is below a level that would be commensurate with their responsibility.     

Effects of low-chloride solutions on action potentials of sheep cadiac purkinje fibers

The rapid repolarization during phase 1 of the action potential of sheep cardiac purkinje fibers has been attributed to a time- and voltage-dependent chloride current. In part, this conclusion was based on experiments that showed a substantial slowing of phase 1 when larger, presumably impermeant, anions were substituted for chloride in tyrode’s solution. We have re- examined the electrical effects of low-chloride solutions. We recorded action potentials of sheep cardiac purkinje fibers in normal tyrode’s solution and in low-chloride solutions made by substituting sodium propionate, acetylglycinate, methylsulfate, or methanesulfonate for the NaCl of Tyrode’s solution. Total calcium was adjusted to keep calcium ion activity of test solutions equal to that of control solutions. Propionate gave qualitatively variable results in preliminary experiments; it was not tested further. Low-chloride solutions made with the other anions gave much more consistent results: phase 1 and the notch that often occurs between phases 1 and 2 were usually unaffected, and the action potential duration usually increased. The only apparent change in the resting potential was a transient 3-6 mV depolarization when low-chloride solution was first admitted to the chamber, and a symmetrical transient hyperpolarization when chloride was returned to normal. If a time- and voltage-dependent chloride current exists in sheep cardiac purkinje fibers, our results suggest that it plays little role in generating phase 1 of the action potential.     

Precision of theGonyaulax circadian clock

Under constant conditions, the circadian bioluminescent glow rhythm in populations (10⁵ cells) ofGonyaulax polyedra is accurate to within 2 min/day. On successive days following the transfer to constant conditions, however, the glow exhibits a progressively broader waveform, implying that individual clocks in the population are drifting out of synchrony. Analysis of the glow waveform suggests that the standard deviation in circadian period among individual clocks is about 18 min and that the period of a given clock varies by less than this from one day to the next.     

Enhanced bactericidal activity of platelet β-lysin forE. coli in the presence of membrane perturbation

Inhibition by sodium chloride of the growth of 19 strains ofLegionella pneumophila and of 10 strains of otherLegionella spp. was studied. Results from growth in buffered -ketoglutarate cysteine yeast extract (BAYE) broth containing 0 to 2.0% sodium chloride indicated that 15/19 laboratory strains ofL. pneumophila were capable of growing in 1.0% to 1.5% sodium chloride, whereas 4 strains ofL. pneumophila and 10 strains of 6 other species were not.L. micdadei andL. longebeachae were the most inhibited in BAYE broth, growing only in concentrations of 0.5% sodium chloride. These in vitro studies indicate thatL. micdadei andL. longbeachae might be differentiated from other species by their low tolerance to salt in BAYE broth, and thatL. pneumophila may be more tolerant to salt concentrations found in brackish water environments.
