A two-step (indirect) immunoperoxidase method directed against Chlamydia trachomatis was developed. The method was then used to evaluate the specificity of cytologic changes suggestive of C. trachomatis in Papanicolaou smears of cervical specimens from women who were culture-negative for the organism. Positive immunoperoxidase staining was detected in 9 of 21 cases (43%) tested. Technical problems, especially background staining, precluded interpretation in the remainder of the cases. Cervical cytology, as demonstrated by immunoperoxidase staining, may, in some instances, be more sensitive than the culture. However, because the etiology of cytologic changes not specifically identified by immunoperoxidase staining may be due to other organisms or factors, immunoperoxidase procedures, as described, should not replace culture for confirmation of cytologic findings suggestive of C. trachomatis. 相似文献

Fungal pathogens pose a major challenge to global crop production. Crop varieties that resist disease present the best defence and offer an alternative to chemical fungicides. Exploiting durable nonhost resistance (NHR) for crop protection often requires identification and transfer of NHR‐linked genes to the target crop. Here, we identify genes associated with NHR of Arabidopsis thaliana to Phakopsora pachyrhizi, the causative agent of the devastating fungal disease called Asian soybean rust. We transfer selected Arabidopsis NHR‐linked genes to the soybean host and discover enhanced resistance to rust disease in some transgenic soybean lines in the greenhouse. Interspecies NHR gene transfer thus presents a promising strategy for genetically engineered control of crop diseases. 相似文献

Abstract.— Species of Anolis lizards that use broad substrates have long legs, which provide enhanced maximal sprint speed, whereas species that use narrow surfaces have short legs, which permit careful movements. We raised hatchling A. sagrei in terraria provided with only broad or only narrow surfaces. At the end of the experiment, lizards in the broad treatment had relatively longer hindlimbs than lizards in the narrow treatment. These results indicate that not only is hindlimb length a plastic trait in these lizards, but that this plasticity leads to the production of phenotypes appropriate to particular environments. Comparison to hindlimb lengths of other Anolis species indicates that the range of plasticity is limited compared to the diversity shown throughout the anole radiation.
