Dominant males of nonseasonally breeding species should have more opportunity than seasonal breeders to monopolize access to estrous females and thus enhance their reproductive success. They may also use other strategies for maximizing reproductive success such as producing offspring by relatively high ranking females. To test these hypotheses, the paternity of 35 (80%) of 44 Macaca fascicularis offspring, born over a 28-month period, was established using electrophoretically and serologically defined genetic markers. The social ranks of each of the seven potential fathers and 26 potential mothers were determined by recording outcomes of dyadio agonistic interactions. No evidence could be found to support either hypothesis. Further, in view of previously reported significant, positive correlations between male social rank and sexual activity rates in this study group, sexual activity rates do not appear to predict the number of offspring a male sires in this species.  相似文献

Uteroferrin, a purple-colored, iron-containing acid phosphatase, with many of the properties of a lysosomal hydrolase, transports iron from the mother to the conceptus in pregnant pigs. Uteroferrin, however, is but one member of what may be a broad class of iron-containing phosphatases with unusual spectral properties which result from a novel type of di-iron active site. The biological function of uteroferrin is unknown. We argue here that the in vivo function of uteroferrin, despite its undoubted ability to act as a potent acid phosphatase, is that of a transplacental iron transporter.  相似文献

Mammalian NOTCH1-4 receptors are all associated with human malignancy, although exact roles remain enigmatic. Here we employ glp-1(ar202), a temperature-sensitive gain-of-function C. elegans NOTCH mutant, to delineate NOTCH-driven tumor responses to radiotherapy. At ≤20°C, glp-1(ar202) is wild-type, whereas at 25°C it forms a germline stem cell⁄progenitor cell tumor reminiscent of human cancer. We identify a NOTCH tumor phenotype in which all tumor cells traffic rapidly to G2⁄M post-irradiation, attempt to repair DNA strand breaks exclusively via homology-driven repair, and when this fails die by mitotic death. Homology-driven repair inactivation is dramatically radiosensitizing. We show that these concepts translate directly to human cancer models.  相似文献

Summary The trmD gene, which governs the formation of 1-methyl-guanosine (m1G) in transfer ribonucleic acid (tRNA), has been located by phage P1 transduction at 56 min on the chromosomal map of Escherichia coli. Cotransduction to tyrA at 56 min is 80%. From the Clarke and Carbon collection a ColE1-tyrA + hybrid plasmid was isolated, which carried the trmD + gene and was shown to over-produce the tRNA (m1G)methyltransferase. By subcloning restriction enzyme fragments in vitro, the trmD + gene was located to a 3.4 kb DNA fragment 6.5 kb clockwise from the tyrA + gene. The mutation trmD1, which renders the tRNA (m1G) methyltransferase temperaturesensitive both in vivo and in vitro could be complemented by trmD + plasmids. These results suggest that the gene trmD + is the structural gene for the tRNA (m1G)methyltransferase (EC 2.1.1.3.1).  相似文献

Abstract— l -Tyrosine:2-oxoglutarate aminotransferase (EC 2.6.1.5) activity in rat brain is not regulated in the same way as in rat liver. No diurnal rhythm in the activity of the cerebral enzyme was found in rats fed ad lib. although there was a marked diurnal variation in the activity of the hepatic enzyme. In adrenalectomized rats, hydrocortisone and glucagon induced the enzyme in liver but had no effect on the enzyme in brain. In normal rats, treatment with reserpine or exposure to cold elevated the activity of the hepatic enzyme without affecting the enzyme in brain. Thus, the tyrosine aminotransferase of brain differed from the enzyme in liver since it did not exhibit diurnal variations of activity and was not affected by hormones, drugs, or stress.  相似文献

Methods for detecting the genomic signatures of natural selection have been heavily studied, and they have been successful in identifying many selective sweeps. For most of these sweeps, the favored allele remains unknown, making it difficult to distinguish carriers of the sweep from non-carriers. In an ongoing selective sweep, carriers of the favored allele are likely to contain a future most recent common ancestor. Therefore, identifying them may prove useful in predicting the evolutionary trajectory—for example, in contexts involving drug-resistant pathogen strains or cancer subclones. The main contribution of this paper is the development and analysis of a new statistic, the Haplotype Allele Frequency (HAF) score. The HAF score, assigned to individual haplotypes in a sample, naturally captures many of the properties shared by haplotypes carrying a favored allele. We provide a theoretical framework for computing expected HAF scores under different evolutionary scenarios, and we validate the theoretical predictions with simulations. As an application of HAF score computations, we develop an algorithm (PreCIOSS: Predicting Carriers of Ongoing Selective Sweeps) to identify carriers of the favored allele in selective sweeps, and we demonstrate its power on simulations of both hard and soft sweeps, as well as on data from well-known sweeps in human populations.  相似文献

Chloroflexus aurantiacus can be induced to shift from respiratory to photosynthetic energy production by introducing light and/or lowering the oxygen concentration of a culture. After induction, cells synthesize bacteriochlorophyll and proteins for the formation of a functional photosynthetic apparatus. Bacteriochlorophyll is detectable within 2 h after induction. Chlorosome polypeptides are detected after 8–12 h. Two proteins, Mr 60,000 and Mr 47,000, are present in both induced and noninduced cells and react specifically with antibodies against chlorosome polypeptides. Immunological data suggest that these proteins (Mr 60,000 and 47,000) are polyproteins which are transcribed and translated in the dark. When cells are exposed to light or low oxygen tension these proteins are processed into functional polypeptides required in the assembly of the chlorosome. In artiodactyls, arterial blood destined for the brain can be cooled through counter-current heat exchange within the cavernous sinus via a process called selective brain cooling. We test the hypothesis that selective brain cooling, which results in lowered hypothalamic temperature, contributes to water conservation in sheep. Nine Dorper sheep, instrumented to provide measurements of carotid blood and brain temperature, were dosed with deuterium oxide (D2O), exposed to heat for 8 days (40◦C for 6-h per day) and deprived of water for the last five days (days 3 to 8). Plasma osmolality increased and the body water fraction decreased over the five days of water deprivation, with the sheep losing 16.7% of their body mass. Following water deprivation, both the mean 24h carotid blood temperature and the mean 24h brain temperature increased, but carotid blood temperature increased more than did brain temperature resulting in increased selective brain cooling. There was considerable inter-individual variation in the degree to which individual sheep used selective brain cooling. In general, sheep spent more time using selective brain cooling, and it was of greater magnitude, when dehydrated compared to when they were euhydrated. We found a significant positive correlation between selective brain cooling magnitude and osmolality (an index of hydration state). Both the magnitude of selective brain cooling and the proportion of time that sheep spent selective brain cooling were negatively correlated with water turnover. Sheep that used selective brain cooling more frequently, and with greater magnitude, lost less water than did conspecifics using selective brain cooling less efficiently. Our results show that a 50kg sheep can save 2.6L of water per day (~60% of daily water intake) when it employs selective brain cooling for 50% of the day during heat exposure. We conclude that selective brain cooling has a water conservation function in artiodactyls.  相似文献
