Summary The analysis of hemoglobins from two anurans, one semi-aquatic (Leptodactylus labyrinthicus) and the other aquatic (Pipa carvalhoi), showed several components isolated by CM-cellulose chromatography. The two major components (Hb II and Hb III) ofL. labyrinthicus and the major components (Hb III and Hb IV) ofP. carvalhoi possess functional properties as follows: i.P. carvalnoi Hb III and Hb IV andL. labyrinthicus Hb II had very small Bohr effects (–0.05) and a substantial heterotropic effect with polyphosphates. ii.L. labyrinthicus Hb III produced a normal Bohr effect of –0.17, with no influence of polyphosphates. The authors wish to dedicate this paperin memoriam of Prof. Eraldo Antonini who contributed much to the knowledge of hemoglobins  相似文献

Visual pigments are G-protein-coupled receptors that provide a critical interface between organisms and their external environment. Natural selection has generated vertebrate pigments that absorb light from the far-UV (360 nm) to the deep red (630 nm) while using a single chromophore, in either the A1 (11- cis-retinal) or A2 (11- cis-3,4-dehydroretinal) form. The fact that a single chromophore can be manipulated to have an absorption maximum across such an extended spectral region is remarkable. The mechanisms of wavelength regulation remain to be fully revealed, and one of the least well-understood mechanisms is that associated with the deep red pigments. We investigate theoretically the hypothesis that deep red cone pigments select a 6- s- trans conformation of the retinal chromophore ring geometry. This conformation is in contrast to the 6- s- cis ring geometry observed in rhodopsin and, through model chromophore studies, the vast majority of visual pigments. Nomographic spectral analysis of 294 A1 and A2 cone pigment literature absorption maxima indicates that the selection of a 6- s- trans geometry red shifts M/LWS A1 pigments by approximately 1500 cm (-1) ( approximately 50 nm) and A2 pigments by approximately 2700 cm (-1) ( approximately 100 nm). The homology models of seven cone pigments indicate that the deep red cone pigments select 6- s- trans chromophore conformations primarily via electrostatic steering. Our results reveal that the generation of a 6- s- trans conformation not only achieves a significant red shift but also provides enhanced stability of the chromophore within the deep red cone pigment binding sites.  相似文献

Background

Cultural differences in socialization can lead to characteristic differences in how we perceive the world. Consistent with this influence of differential experience, our perception of faces (e.g., preference, recognition ability) is shaped by our previous experience with different groups of individuals.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Here, we examined whether cultural differences in social practices influence our perception of faces. Japanese, Chinese, and Asian-Canadian young adults made relative age judgments (i.e., which of these two faces is older?) for East Asian faces. Cross-cultural differences in the emphasis on respect for older individuals was reflected in participants'' latency in facial age judgments for middle-age adult faces—with the Japanese young adults performing the fastest, followed by the Chinese, then the Asian-Canadians. In addition, consistent with the differential behavioural and linguistic markers used in the Japanese culture when interacting with individuals younger than oneself, only the Japanese young adults showed an advantage in judging the relative age of children''s faces.

Conclusions/Significance

Our results show that different sociocultural practices shape our efficiency in processing facial age information. The impact of culture may potentially calibrate other aspects of face processing.  相似文献

We describe the use of zinc-finger nucleases (ZFNs) for somatic and germline disruption of genes in zebrafish (Danio rerio), in which targeted mutagenesis was previously intractable. ZFNs induce a targeted double-strand break in the genome that is repaired to generate small insertions and deletions. We designed ZFNs targeting the zebrafish golden and no tail/Brachyury (ntl) genes and developed a budding yeast-based assay to identify the most active ZFNs for use in vivo. Injection of ZFN-encoding mRNA into one-cell embryos yielded a high percentage of animals carrying distinct mutations at the ZFN-specified position and exhibiting expected loss-of-function phenotypes. Over half the ZFN mRNA-injected founder animals transmitted disrupted ntl alleles at frequencies averaging 20%. The frequency and precision of gene-disruption events observed suggest that this approach should be applicable to any loci in zebrafish or in other organisms that allow mRNA delivery into the fertilized egg.  相似文献

To the natives of the Caribbean island of Dominica, the dream is proclaimed la konpanyi la nuit (the companion of the night). Belief in dreams is grounded in diverse cultural influences, including those of the French, West African, British, and the doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church. In this richly imaginative dream world, myths and truths are finely interwoven to create an unwritten glossary of dream symbol interpretation. Although these interpretations have not enjoyed scientific validation, practical, historical, and psychological data are found to resonate with these traditional Dominican interpretations. Some ommochrome-deficient mutants of Drosophila melanogaster (v, cn, cd, and st) the xanthine NAD-oxidoreductase-deficient mal mutant, and the double mutants mal v, mal cn, mal cd, and mal st, were analysed for their drosopterin content. Results indicate that xanthommatin and NAD+ are involved as cofactors in the transformation process of 7,8-dihydrobiopterin into sepiapterin. A metabolic pathway model for drosopterin biosynthesis that explains the different pterin contents of the mutants studied is now proposed.  相似文献

A survey of the Hydrophilidae (Coleoptera: Hydrophiloidea) from Baixo Parnaíba Sub-basin, north of Piauí (Northeast Region of Brazil) is provided here. A total of 288 specimens, from 7 genera and 13 species, were collected between January 2015 and March 2016 in 15 localities. Six species are recorded for the first time from the State of Piauí: Berosus firmius Orchymont, 1940; Derallus ambitus Orchymont, 1940; Helochares (Helochares) abbreviatus (Fabricius, 1801); Hemiosus (Hemiosus) mornarius Orchymont, 1940; Hydrophilus ensifer Brullé, 1837 and Enochrus (Methydrus) venezuelensis Fernández, 1988. Moreover, the last species aforementioned is recorded for the first time from Brazil.  相似文献

Young infants are known to prefer own-race faces to other race faces and recognize own-race faces better than other-race faces. However, it is entirely unclear as to whether infants also attend to different parts of own- and other-race faces differently, which may provide an important clue as to how and why the own-race face recognition advantage emerges so early. The present study used eye tracking methodology to investigate whether 6- to 10-month-old Caucasian infants (N = 37) have differential scanning patterns for dynamically displayed own- and other-race faces. We found that even though infants spent a similar amount of time looking at own- and other-race faces, with increased age, infants increasingly looked longer at the eyes of own-race faces and less at the mouths of own-race faces. These findings suggest experience-based tuning of the infant''s face processing system to optimally process own-race faces that are different in physiognomy from other-race faces. In addition, the present results, taken together with recent own- and other-race eye tracking findings with infants and adults, provide strong support for an enculturation hypothesis that East Asians and Westerners may be socialized to scan faces differently due to each culture''s conventions regarding mutual gaze during interpersonal communication.  相似文献
