Summary Transgenic plants of Osteospermum ecklonis were produced by cocultivation of leaf fragments with Agrobacterium tumefaciens harboring rol genes from A. rhizogenes. The phenotypic alterations caused by the different transgenes were evaluated in field trials. The genetic manipulation produced
transgenic plants characterized by the following features: 1) increased number of flowers (e.g., 35SrolC and rolABC); 2) early flowering (e.g., 35SrolC); 3) change of plant growth habit: erect (rolAB, rolABC and 35SrolC) with an increased number of branches (e.g., rolABC). The color of leaves was pale green in 35SrolC and dark green in rolAB transgenic plants. In conclusion this work reports: 1) genetic engineering of the ornamental species O. ecklonis, 2) modification of the main ornamental traits of this species by rol genes, and 3) segregation of the transgenes in the progeny. 相似文献

The aim of this paper is to contribute to the knowledge on the feeding habits of larvae and juvenile Pleuragramma antarcticum in the western Ross Sea. In summer, the diet of P. antarcticum postlarvae (8–17 mm) was dominated by calanoid eggs (35.5%), Limacina (32.1%) and tintinnids (17.6%), while the principal food of juveniles consisted mainly of copepods (98.2%), with Oncaea curvata being the most abundant (85.1%) and the most frequently consumed prey. The food composition of P. antarcticum postlarvae (24–29 mm), collected in spring, suggest that they fed actively under the sea ice. Stephos longipes, Harpacticus furcifer and Paralabidocera antarctica sea ice copepods represent, in all their different developmental stages, the most abundant biomass food in Terra Nova Bay
in this period. Our results therefore suggest that the diet of younger Pleuragramma specimens shifted in prey composition from the first summer to the following spring. This study draws attention to the key
role of the copepod, P. antarctica, in the food web of Terra Nova Bay.

Several types of colorectal cancers are associated with a prominent lymphoid component, which is considered a positive prognostic factor.We report a case of a dome-type carcinoma of the cecum in a 57 year old female.The sessile, non-polypoid lesion histologically consisted of a tubulovillous adenoma with low-grade dysplasia.The submucosal invasive component showed low-grade architectural features that included cystically dilated glands containing eosinohilic debris. Immunohistochemical studies displayed retention of the four mistmach repair proteins, consistent with a stable phenotype. After 3 years, the patient remains free of recurrence.A literature review highlighted striking similarities between dome-type carcinoma and the gut-associated lymphoid tissue carcinoma, the two sharing an intimate association with the gut associated lymphoid tissue.The two variants might therefore be grouped into a unified category. 相似文献

Aim
The high variability of “centre-specific” documentation required by Independent Ethics Committee (IEC) plays a role in the time required for activation of participating centres of multicentre clinical trials. This study (a) provides a picture of the different activities, structural requirements and resources dedicated to the operation of the local IEC in Italy; (b) defines a detailed list of “centre-specific” documents considered as essential by the IEC for issuing its opinion and (c) suggests a “single document” to reduce the variability of the “centre-specific” documents required by the IEC.Methodology
Two surveys were conducted through the portal of National Monitoring Centre of Clinical Trials (https://oss-sper-clin.agenziafarmaco.it/). The first survey focused on the local IEC resources and on the “centre-specific” documentation that local IEC required from the Sponsor and local Principal Investigator (PI). The second focused on “single document” required in the form of statements from the Sponsor and the PI. Answers were discussed and extended during regular scheduled teleconferences and plenary meeting.Principal Findings
From 22/07/2009 to 15/12/2009, and from 19/04/2010 to 14/05/2010, 131 and 125 IECs responded to the first and the second surveys, respectively. 67% and 51% of IECs consider the structural requirements and the staff dedicated to the activity of the IECs as sufficient, respectively. Most of the IECs consider the “centre-specific” documentation as necessary for issuing the opinion, and a high percentage of IECs consider the proposed documentation as acceptable in substitution to any other “centre-specific” documentation already in use.Conclusions
The harmonization of IECs practice in Italy is the first step to facilitate multicentre clinical trials. Similar efforts should be directed to reduce the total number of IECs and to standardize clinical trials approval procedures, focusing on administrative procedures as well. 相似文献5.

Background
The study of cell metabolism is becoming central in several fields such as biotechnology, evolution/adaptation and human disease investigations. Here we present CiliateGEM, the first metabolic network reconstruction draft of the freshwater ciliate Tetrahymena thermophila. We also provide the tools and resources to simulate different growth conditions and to predict metabolic variations. CiliateGEM can be extended to other ciliates in order to set up a meta-model, i.e. a metabolic network reconstruction valid for all ciliates.Ciliates are complex unicellular eukaryotes of presumably monophyletic origin, with a phylogenetic position that is equal from plants and animals. These cells represent a new concept of unicellular system with a high degree of species, population biodiversity and cell complexity. Ciliates perform in a single cell all the functions of a pluricellular organism, including locomotion, feeding, digestion, and sexual processes.Results
After generating the model, we performed an in-silico simulation with the presence and absence of glucose. The lack of this nutrient caused a 32.1% reduction rate in biomass synthesis. Despite the glucose starvation, the growth did not stop due to the use of alternative carbon sources such as amino acids.Conclusions
The future models obtained from CiliateGEM may represent a new approach to describe the metabolism of ciliates. This tool will be a useful resource for the ciliate research community in order to extend these species as model organisms in different research fields. An improved understanding of ciliate metabolism could be relevant to elucidate the basis of biological phenomena like genotype-phenotype relationships, population genetics, and cilia-related disease mechanisms.6.

ABSTRACT A phytosociological study of the shrubland communities which colonise abandoned terraced olive groves in the Tyrrhenian district of Central Italy is presented here. The vegetational analysis was carried out using the Braun Blanquet phytosociological approach. Two main types of shrubland communities characterising distinct environmental conditions occur within abandoned terraced olive groves. On the one hand, there are those scrub types which tend to occupy the central part of the terrace; on the other hand, there are the scrubs types which develop along the stone walls bordering the terrace. Different phytosociological associations, sub-associations, and variants ranging from Pistacio-Rhamnetalia alaternii to Prunetalia spinosae are recognised and described. In the warm dry areas, both Myrto-Lentiscetum and Rhamno-Euphorbietum dendroidis occur. Also, a new Oleo-Ceratonion sub-association (Myrto-Lentiscetum spartietosum junceii) is presented here for the first time. In the inner zones of the study area, a range of aspects characterising a new Pruno-Rubion ulmifolii community type (Roso-Rubetum ulmifolii ass. nova) are identified. 相似文献

Current evidences suggest that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs could enhance the antiviral activity of interferon-alpha in chronic HCV infection. In this study, we investigated the effect of indomethacin, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, and interferon-alpha on cytokine production by peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 12 untreated patients with chronic hepatitis C. We evaluated the effect of incubation with indomethacin, interferon-alpha or both on synthesis of Th1- (interleukin-2, interferon-gamma) and Th2-associated cytokines (interleukin-4, interleukin-10), and of the antiviral protein 2',5'-oligoadenylate synthetase. Interferon-alpha induced a significant increase in production of interleukin-2. Smaller increases were also seen in the presence of indomethacin, while incubation with both indomethacin and interferon-alpha leads to a synergistic effect. Incubation with indomethacin decreased both interleukin-4 and interleukin-10, whereas interferon-alpha increased these cytokines. The addition of indomethacin to interferon-alpha significantly reversed this interferon-induced increase. Finally, both indomethacin and the association interferon-alpha plus indomethacin determined a significant increase in 2',5'-oligoadenylate synthetase production compared to both baseline and interferon-alpha alone. In conclusion, indomethacin was able to enhance the antiviral activity of interferon-alpha and to modulate the interferon-induced Th1 and Th2 cytokine response by increasing the Th1-response, fundamental for sustained clearance of HCV, and by decreasing the Th-2 type response, associated with HCV persistence. 相似文献
