Females of the Indian meal moth, Plodia interpunctella, and females of the Mediterranean flour month, Ephestia kuehniella (both Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), exhibit daily rhythms in calling behavior. The peak in P. interpunctella calling occurs at dusk, whereas E. kuehniella calls preferentially at dawn. This behavior turned arrhythmic in P. interpunctella females in constant darkness (DD) and remained arrhythmic in constant light (LL), whereas E. kuehniella females showed a persistent rhythm in DD and suppression of the behavior in LL, indicating regulation by a circadian clock mechanism. The rhythm of male locomotor activity corresponded well with the sexual activity of females, reaching the peak at dusk in P. interpunctella and at dawn in E. kuehniella. An immunohistochemical study of the pheromone biosynthesis activating neuropeptide, corazonin, and pigment dispersing factor revealed distinct sets of neurons in the brain-subesophageal complex and in the neurohemal organs of the 2 species.  相似文献

We have examined the timing of calling behavior in the female Egyptian cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis and its modification by exposure to sex pheromone. The calling rhythm of the female moth was found to be circadian, persistent for at least 4 days once it has been entrained, and could be phase shifted by altering the light:dark regime. We also found that female exposure to pheromone affected the rate and duration of calling. A brief exposure to pheromone gland extract increased the proportion of females calling in a constant dim light and this effect persisted for at least 2 days. In response to pheromone exposure, significantly more females also called late into scotophase when most unexposed control females had ceased calling. The adaptive significance of responding to conspecific sex pheromone is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract. The decline of deciduous woodland populations of Anemone hepatica L. in southern Sweden is documented and possible causes are discussed. The study was based on (1) re‐investigations of 6.25 km2 grid‐squares first studied in 1938–1970, (2) distribution of A. hepatica in woodland sites with well‐known soil chemical properties and (3) a detailed study over 12 consecutive years into the relationships between biological characteristics of the species (number of individuals, vegetative development, flowering frequency) and environmental variables (temperature, precipitation), soil chemistry and time. There was a close relationship between soil acidity (pH, solubility of Al3+) and both distribution and biological characteristics. The biological variables declined significantly over time but were not related to climatic variability. Increasing soil acidity and Al3+ solubility are concluded to be the main factors responsible for the decline of A. hepatica in S. Swedish deciduous woodlands.  相似文献

The macrofungal flora (species producing fruitbodies) of oak forest in Scania and N.E. Småland, south Sweden, is compared on the basis of soil chemical and stand structural properties and general differences in the deposition of acid and acidifying pollutants between these two regions. Deposition in Scania is, on average, twice as high and the mean base saturation of the oak forest humus only half of that in Småland. Species characteristic of soils with high base saturation/pH values (e.g. Cortinarius nemorensis, Entoloma nidorosum, Camarophyllus spp., Marasmius epiphyllus ) were usually more common in Småland, whereas the opposite was true for most species characteristic of highly acidic soils (e.g. Entoloma cetratum, Lactarius camphoratus, L. theiogalus, Mycena sanguinolenta ). Known changes of soil acidity and base saturation in south Sweden during recent decades and information from this and related studies suggest that the species composition of the macrofungal flora in deciduous forest of south Sweden is gradually changing as a result of changing soil chemistry.  相似文献

Growth rate of the calcifuge plants Carex pilulifera, Deschampsiaflexuosa, Holcus mollis, Luzula pilosa, Nardus stricta, andVeronica officinalis, transplanted into an Ordovician limestonesoil of pH 8, increased by two to three times on addition of5 mol m-3 of CaHPO4 compared to untreated conditions. For Galiumsaxatile, however, P treatment was lethal and growth was possibleonly in soil supplied with Fe(III) citrate, which had littleor no effect on growth of the other six species. Phosphate treatmentof the limestone soil greatly increased plant uptake of P, whereasP concentration of shoots from untreated soil was very low andprobably highly deficient, compared to plants of field siteorigin. From this and two other recent studies it is now possibleto conclude that the calcifuge habit of plants, at least underclimatic conditions prevailing in northern Europe, is most oftendue to an inability of such plants to render the native phosphateof limestone soils available to plant uptake. Germination, establishment and growth of Melica ciliata L.,an 'acidifuge' species of rocky habitats in Europe, were studiedexperimentally and related to chemical properties of the soilsolution, including pH, base cation composition, Al concentrationand speciation, and Mn concentration. M. ciliata failed to establishin acid leptite soil. However, it was able to grow in solutionat pH 3·6 and exhibited vigorous growth at pH 3·9,a typical soil solution pH of leptite sites, which Melica isunable to colonize. Higher concentrations of Mn than those measuredin any leptite soil solutions did not influence growth. Exposureto 0·037 mmol l-1 (1 mg l-1) of Al3+, a concentrationusually exceeded in the soil solution of leptite sites, severelyretarded root growth. Speciation technique applied to Al insoil solutions obtained by centrifugation demonstrated a closerelationship between H+ and Al concentrations and, in particular,between H+ and free ionic (quickly reacting) Al species. Soilsolution concentrations of free ionic Al proved to be < 0·002mmol l-1 in sites lacking Melica , but often > 0·10mmol l-1 in site lacking Metalica . Effects of annual variation in rainfall, temperature and humidityon flowering abundance of eight temperate woodland plants (Anemonenemorosa, Cardamine bulbifera, Lamiastrum galeobdolon,Oxalisacetosella , Ranunculus ficaria, Stellaria holostea, Viola reichenbachianaand Viola riviniana) were studied during 12 consecutive years(1989–2000) in a hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) forest insoutheast Sweden. Above-average rainfall/humidity in late summerto early autumn of the preceding year increased flowering abundancein L. galeobdolon, O. acetosella, V. reichenbachiana, V. rivinianaand, especially, in R. ficaria, but not in S. holostea and A.nemorosa. Moreover, flowering of R. ficaria and O. acetosellawas positively related to rainfall/humidity during several partsof, or the entire, preceding year. On the contrary, floweringof S. holostea and A. nemorosa was closely related to low valuesof rainfall/humidity in autumn and/or winter of the precedingyear and also to low humidity in the current year in A. nemorosa.Two long periods (3–4 years) of increasing rainfall deficitcoincided with decreasing flowering abundance in most of thespecies, but not with decreasing vegetative development. Temperaturevariability was less consistently related to flowering. A coolperiod during the preceding summer or autumn seemed importantfor flowering in L. galeobdolon, O. acetosella and the Violaspecies, although these relations were, at least partly, causedby interactions with rainfall/humidity. No significant (P <0.05) correlations were found between flowering and the conditionsprevailing in April to May—the main flowering season—ofthe current year. The vascular plant flora of open land on superficial bedrock in southem Sweden (northwards to 59°N) is described and related to soil chemical properties. including soil acidity (pH), exchangeable Al, Ca, Fe, Mn, Mg, and phosphate, as well as to soil solution pH and concentrations of Al, Ca and Mg, and to the contents of soil organic matter, soil depth and bedrock types (sandstone, gneiss, granites, various dark igneous rocks and limestones). About 120 localities with totally 652 sites (4 m2) have been examined. Experimental evidence for the toxicity of acid soils and mineral nutrient deficiency of neutral and alkaline soils is related to field data. Hydrogen and Al ion toxicity in acid soils and low phosphate solubility in neutral - alkaline soils are identified as major factors limiting the field distributions of rock habitat plants. Some species (e.g., Rumex acetosella and Sedum telephium ) were limited by phosphate also in acid soils. The relative importance of H and Al ion concentrations to plant performance under variously acid soil conditions is discussed, and strong evidence is given for a decisive influence of Al ion toxicity on species diversity at pH-KCI > 4.5. The importance of grazing and former land use is considered briefly and the floristic differences between the western and the eastern half of the study area are discussed originating from differences in general distribution patterns of species and soil chemical properties.  相似文献

The distributions of vascular plants in south Swedish deciduous forests were related to exchangeable (exc) and soil solution concentrations of H+ (pH), Ca, Al and the Ca:Al ratios within these fractions. Topsoils (0–5 cm) of 172 sites with a pHKCl of 3.2–3.9 (corresponding to 3.7–4.4 in soil solution) were used. In the soil solution both total Alt and quickly reacting Alr were determined. Exchangeable concentrations were generally well related to plant distributions, the highest correlation coefficients usually being given by pHKCl>Caexc>Alexc.>(Ca:Al)exc. The (Ca:Al)exc ratio was clearly inferior. Out of the soil solution variables studied, Ca concentration, followed by pH, was best correlated with plant distributions, Alt, Alr, and the Ca:Al ratios having similar and lower coefficients. It is concluded that the use of Ca:Al ratios as a general measure of Al toxicity in controlling plant distributions is rather problematic. It seems difficult to apply evidence for Ca-Al interactions from solution culture experiments to field conditions when measured as exchangeable or soil solution concentrations of the soil.  相似文献

Mixtures of rare earth elements (REEs) in fertilizers are widely used in Chinese agriculture to improve crop nutrition. REE concentrations in wild-growing plants, especially herbs, are little known. This study describes differences in the concentrations and proportions of REEs in eight forest-floor herbaceous plants and relates these differences to soil and mineral nutrient conditions. REEs studied were yttrium (Y), lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), praseodymium (Pr), neodymium (Nd), samarium (Sm), europium (Eu), gadolinium (Gd), terbium (Tb), dysprosium (Dy), holmium (Ho), erbium (Er), thulium (Tm), ytterbium (Yb), and lutetium (Lu). Leaf concentrations of sum REEs differed more than one order of magnitude between species, being highest in Anemone nemorosa (10.1 nmol/g dry mass) and lowest in Convallaria majalis (0.66 nmol/g) from the same site. Leaf concentrations of all REEs correlated positively (p<0.001), as did sum REE with calcium (Ca) and strontium (Sr) concentrations (p<0.001). A negative relationship (r=−0.83, (p<0.001) was measured between phosphorus (P) concentrations and sum REE concentrations in leaves. However, the proportions of the single REEs in the REE sum differed among species. In A. nemorosa, 57% of the molar REE sum was taken by Y+La, and only 21% by Ce. The other extreme was Maianthemum bifolium, with 37% La+Y and 41% Ce. These two species had 2.7–3.0% of the REE sum as heavier lanthanides, compared to 4.1–5.2% in the six other species. No clear relationship between soil properties or REE contents and leaf REE concentrations was detected. For La, however, an overrepresentation in leaves prevailed throughout all species compared to soils, whereas particularly Nd, Sm, and Tb had a lower proportion in the leaves of all species than in their soils. Possible uptake mechanisms of REEs in plants are discussed.  相似文献
