Leucostasis, an underestimated cause of death in leukaemia

Massive sludging of leukaemic cells in blood vessels is a frequent and often lethal complication of leukaemia. In a retrospective clinicopathological study on the causes of death in 52 patients with acute myeloid leukaemia and myeloproliferative disease, pulmonary leucostasis was found in 40% of the patients. In many of these patients the vessels of the heart, brain and testes were also involved. In search for signs and symptoms specific for leucostasis, the clinical records of the 21 patients with leucostasis (the study group) were compared to those of 20 patients without leucostasis (the control group). Dysfunction of the organs most affected by leucostasis, namely lungs, heart and brain, was found more often in the study group than in the controls, but the combination of unexplained fever with cardiopulmonary and/or central nervous system failure occurred almost exclusively and in half of the patients with leucostasis. Leucostasis occurs predominantly, but not exclusively, in patients with high leucocyte counts, and especially, but again not exclusively, when the leucocyte counts rise sharply.     

Phytochrome controlled acid RNase: An “attached” protein of ribosomes

The light-dependent increment in RNase activity (which is ribosome bound in cell extracts) is distributed as a gradient increasing from base to hook of lupin hypocotyls. No evidence was found of non-specific or of specific activation of pre-formed enzyme molecules following isolation, either before or after (latent activity) destruction of particles. The autodegradation capacity of ribosomes isolated from irradiated cells was almost double that of ribosomes from etiolated tissue. It is proposed that association between the bulk of the light-controlled RNase fraction and lupin ribosomes results from binding of soluble protein. It is not clear whether binding is specific or an artifact of isolation.     

An experimental analysis of cache recovery in Clark's nutcracker

Five hypotheses of cache recovery behaviour in Clark's nutcracker (Nucifraga columbiana) were examined experimentally. Most caches were made in soil within 5 cm of conspicuous large objects. Both seed-caching and non-seed-caching nutcrackers were able to locate caches. Seed-caching nutcrackers relocated caches using large objects as remembered visual cues. Soil microtopography and small (<2 cm diameter) objects may be used as cues to facilitate cache recovery but are not essential. Non-seed-caching nutcrackers located caches by using soil disturbances at cache sites as visual cues and by searching preferentially near objects where caches were concentrated. Success rates of seed-caching nutcrackers ranged from 52 to 78% and those of non-seed-caching nutcrackers ranged from 8 to 12%. Nutcrackers do not use random search or olfactory cues to locate caches.     

Analogs of oxytocin containing a modified peptide bond

Analogs of deamino-oxytocin and deamino-oxypressin containing a CH2-NH group instead of an amide bond between positions 8 and 9 were synthesized. All tested compounds exhibit significantly lowered biological activities.
