Atelocauda koae, a rust of the native HawaiianAcacia koa, is considered as a demicyclic species, having spermogonial, aecial, and telial states, but is unusual in production of aeciospores simultaneously with teliospores rather than consecutively. Host inoculation with spores of each state separately confirmed that the life cycle was perpetuated by the telial state, but the aeciospores, while capable of germination and stomal penetration, did not produce detectable infection. This rust therefore behaves as a microcyclic species, and appears to be in evolutionary transition toward this reduced state. Teliospores produced vestigial, permanently attached basidiosopores which germinated to produce infective hyphae. The hyphae entered the host either through stomata or penetrated the epidermis directly, with the latter method being more common. Unusual nuclear associated with teliospore germination, in which meiosis occurs in more than one diploid nucleus was observed, in confirmation of an earlier study.  相似文献

Crosses were made between the Asian cockroach,Blattella asahinai Mizukubo, and resistant strains of the German cockroach,B. germanica (L.), to assess the transfer of pyrethroid resistance to the progeny and to study the inheritance mechanism(s) involved. It was shown that the strain of Asian cockroaches studied was susceptible to four pyrethroids. F1 progeny were essentially susceptible to the same compounds. Tests with F2 progeny and those from backcrosses to the resistant parent indicated that the data for each pyrethroid fit an hypothesis of simple, autosomal, nearly completely recessive inheritance. The results are discussed from the standpoint of the impact of the Asian genome on the inheritance mechanism(s).  相似文献

The sequence of two cDNA clones coding for the whole of the -subunit and most of the -subunit of legumin are presented together with a considerable amount of protein sequence data to confirm the predicted amino acid sequence. A unique feature shown by these cDNAs is the presence of three 56 base pair tandem repeats in the region encoding the C terminal of the polypeptide. The tandem repeats are also exhibited in the predicted polypeptide sequence as three 18 amino acid repeats which contain extremely high proportions of polar, mainly acidic, residues. The new sequences are compared to the previously published sequence of some shorter legumin cDNAs (Nature 295: 76–79). In the region where the sequences overlap, the previous cDNAs differ from the new ones by only a few base substitutions but most of the repeated region is not present though the sequences on either side are. The possibility that the absence of the repeats may reflect the difference between two types of legumin gene, rather than an artefact of the cloning of the cDNAs, is discussed.  相似文献

Micro-element deficiencies have been implicated in the development of poor stem form in Pinus radiata plantations. Cu, Mn and B have been implicated in previous studies as influencing tree form and/or the process of lignification in plants. Therefore an experiment was initiated to examine the individual and interactive effects exhibited by these trace elements on stem form and lignification.The investigation showed that Cu deficiency reduced both lignification and stem form in seedlings. Mn, competing with Cu for uptake, enhanced the symptoms of Cu deficiency. Boron addition did not alleviate the expression of deformity or increase levels of lignification. There was a clear family influence on the development of seedling stem form in response to variations in mineral nutrition.  相似文献

Ezrin-Radixin-Moesin (ERM) family proteins organize heterogeneous sub-plasma membrane protein scaffolds that shape membranes and their physiology. In Drosophila oocytes and imaginal discs, epithelial organization, fundamental to development and physiology, is devastated by the loss of Moesin. Here, we show that Moesin is crucial for Drosophila photoreceptor morphogenesis. Beyond its requirement for retinal epithelium integrity, Moesin is essential for the proper assembly of the apical membrane skeleton that builds the photosensitive membrane, the rhabdomere. Moesin localizes to the rhabdomere base, a dynamic locus of cytoskeletal reorganization and membrane traffic. Downregulation of Moesin through RNAi or genetic loss of function profoundly disrupts the membrane cytoskeleton and apical membrane organization. We find normal levels and distribution of Moesin in photoreceptors of a Moesin mutant previously regarded as protein null, suggesting alternative interpretations for studies using this allele. Our results show an essential structural role for Moesin in photoreceptor morphology.  相似文献

Summary The adrenergic innervation of the pulmonary vasculature of the file snake Acrochordus granulatus was examined by use of glyoxylic acid-induced fluorescence. Perivascular plexuses of blue-green fluorescent nerves are observed around the common pulmonary artery, the anterior and posterior pulmonary arteries, the arterioles leading to the gas exchange capillaries of the lung, the venules draining the lung, and the anterior and posterior pulmonary veins. Adrenergic nerves are also associated with the visceral smooth muscle of the lung septa and other tissues. Thus, adrenergic control of pulmonary blood flow may occur either at the common pulmonary artery or more regionally within the lung. Regional control of blood flow in the elongate lung of this snake may be important in matching pulmonary perfusion with the distribution of respiratory gas. Glyoxylic acid-histochemistry and immunohistochemistry revealed that populations of cells located in the common pulmonary artery contain the indoleamine 5-hydroxy-tryptamine. Many of the cells are intimately associated with varicose blue-green fluorescent nerves. It is proposed that the 5-hydroxytryptamine-containing cells may be involved in intravascular chemoreception.  相似文献

The genus Mycobacterium comprises significant pathogenic species that infect both humans and animals. One species within this genus, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, is the primary killer of humans resulting from bacterial infections. Five mycobacterial genomes belonging to four different species (M. tuberculosis, Mycobacterium bovis, Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis) have been sequenced to date and another 14 mycobacterial genomes are at various stages of completion. A comparative analysis of the gene products of key metabolic pathways revealed that the major differences among these species are in the gene products constituting the cell wall and the gene families encoding the acidic glycine-rich (PE/PPE/PGRS) proteins. Mycobacterium leprae has evolved by retaining a minimal gene set for most of the gene families, whereas M. avium ssp. paratuberculosis has acquired some of the virulence factors by lateral gene transfer.  相似文献

Activation of the γ-class carbonic anhydrase (CAs, EC 4.2.1.1) from the pathogenic bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei (BpsγCA) with a series of natural and non-natural amino acids and aromatic/heterocyclic amines has been investigated. The best BpsγCA activators were d-His, l-DOPA, d-Trp, 4-amino-l-Phe, dopamine, 2-(2-aminoethyl)pyridine, 2-aminoethyl-piparazine/morpholine and l-adrenaline, which showed activation constants ranging between 9 and 86 nM. The least effective activators were l-His, l-Phe and 2-pyridyl-methylamine, with KAs in the range of 1.73–24.7 μM. As little is known about the role of γ-CAs in the lifecycle and virulence of this saprophytic bacterium, this study may shed some light on such phenomena. This is the first CA activation study of a γ-CA from a pathogenic bacterium, the only other such study being on the enzyme discovered in the archaeon Methanosarcina thermophila, Cam.  相似文献
