We examined which egg parameters warbling vireos Vireo gilvus use to discriminate brown-headed cowbird Molothrus ater eggs and, by comparing our results to other studies, tested the prediction that ejecter species with eggs more similar in appearance to cowbird eggs will be less tolerant of foreign eggs. In addition, we tested the hypothesis that egg characteristics influence the cost of ejection and probability of committing ejection errors. Warbling vireos ejected 100% of eggs with a cowbird spot pattern and only spot pattern significantly influenced the probability of ejecting a foreign egg, whereas size and nest stage did not. Foreign eggs that differed in two parameters were not ejected significantly more than those that differed in one parameter. Thus, warbling vireos appear to be less tolerant of foreign eggs than species with eggs more divergent from cowbird eggs. There was no significant difference in the number of vireo eggs that were damaged when foreign eggs of different sizes and spot patterns were ejected, which is counter to the assumptions of the evolutionary equilibrium hypothesis. Similarly, foreign egg characteristics did not significantly influence the probability of ejection errors. Finally, egg discrimination in warbling vireos appears to have evolved directly to counter cowbird parasitism because all conspecific eggs switched into their nests were accepted.  相似文献

The monoclonal antibody 5HL-5D11-D10 to antigen D10 identifies a cell lineage that is restricted to certain tissues of the human foregut. We investigated the tissue distribution of antigen D10 in mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish by immunohistochemical staining. Tissue from human and each of ten other mammalian species showed staining of gastric mucous neck cells and glands of the cardia and antrum, Brunner's glands, peribiliary glands and periductal glands of the pancreas. Six of the mammalian species also expressed antigen D10 in mucosa of the larger bronchi, and five expressed it to varying degree in small bowel distal to the duodenum and in colon (three of these five species). Antigen was not detected in any of the three species of bird studied. Both reptiles and amphibians showed strong staining for antigen D10 in the gastric mucous neck cells and pyloric glands, and in a subpopulation of secretory cells in the oesophagus, with the amphibian also expressing antigen in some epithelial cells of the mouth and lung. Although absent from two species of bony fish, antigen D10 was expressed by small groups of epithelial cells of the intestine of a shark, and generally by the epithelial and connective tissue cells of the gut and gills, and hepatocytes of one species of ray. The presence of antigen D10 in different tissues and species was confirmed by both an indirect ELISA and immunoblot analysis of tissue extracts. Our observations suggest that the D10 epitope characterises a subpopulation of mucus-secreting cells, predominantly of the foregut and associated organs, which has been conserved throughout terrestrial vertebrate evolution.  相似文献

The effects of grazers (mostly gastropods), height on the shore, wave-exposure, season of the year and the presence of shallow rock-pools on the abundance of intertidal macroalgae were examined on shores at Cape Banks (Botany Bay). At the beginning of each of the four seasons, experimental plots with and without grazers were cleared at four heights on three shores, of increasing exposure to waves, The colonization and growth of algae in these plots were monitored (by measurement of per cent cover and dry wt) for approximately the next 3 months in each season.In grazed plots, foliose algae only grew at the lowest levels on the shores. They were more abundant where wave-action was greater, and during the cooler periods of the year, when growth of the plants was enhanced. Higher on the shore, there was a positive correlation between algal cover in grazed plots and the amount of rainfall during the previous 10 days. In all seasons, there was much greater colonization of foliose algae where grazers were excluded. There was greater algal growth at lower levels on the shore, and where wave-action was stronger. Less algae grew in sheltered areas during warmer times of the year. The major seasonal difference found was the more rapid growth and occupancy of the rock by algae during the cooler seasons of the year.Experimental rock-pools were colonized more rapidly at lower levels on the shore, and during the winter. There was no difference between pools and control (non-pool) areas during winter. During summer, however, there was a greater per cent cover and biomass of algae in pools from which grazers had been excluded than in similar control areas.The results can be interpreted as being due to the greater survival and more rapid growth of algae under conditions of increased moisture, decreased emersion and decreased temperatures and light regimes during low tide (i.e. when physical stresses were reduced). These physical factors were, however, less important to the distribution of the algae than were the effects of grazers. Although few algae were present in any experimental plot, the number of species of algae per plot was considerably reduced in grazed areas.The results confirm that the patterns of vertical distribution and abundance of algae on rock-platforms in New South Wales are primarily the result of the activities of grazers. All algae in the present study were capable of living higher on the shore than they were normally found. Much of the variation along a gradient of wave-exposure, from season to season, and small-scale variation from place to place at any time can be explained by the complex interactions between the activities of grazers, and the effects of variations in the physical environment that influence the recruitment, survival and growth of the algae.  相似文献

A silicified seed cone of Oligocene age from the Olympic Peninsula of Washington represents a new species of Pinus. The cone was about 8 cm long and 3 cm at its widest diameter in the living condition. Its scale apices are thickened and each has a dorsal umbo. Internal cone construction confirms the assignment of the new species to Pinus and suggests affinity with the subsections Australes and Ponderosae of the section Pinus, subgenus Pinus. The cone is peculiar in having a stout bract trace that is slightly concave on its adaxial side and in having resin canals that diverge from the axial secretory system toward the bract but constrict markedly and terminate before entering the bract.  相似文献

The anaphylatoxin C3a is a potent chemotactic peptide and inflammatory mediator released during complement activation which binds to and activates a G-protein-coupled receptor. Molecular cloning of the C3aR has facilitated studies to identify nonpeptide antagonists of the C3aR. A chemical lead that selectively inhibited the C3aR in a high throughput screen was identified and chemically optimized. The resulting antagonist, N(2)-[(2,2-diphenylethoxy)acetyl]-L-arginine (SB 290157), functioned as a competitive antagonist of (125)I-C3a radioligand binding to rat basophilic leukemia (RBL)-2H3 cells expressing the human C3aR (RBL-C3aR), with an IC(50) of 200 nM. SB 290157 was a functional antagonist, blocking C3a-induced C3aR internalization in a concentration-dependent manner and C3a-induced Ca(2+) mobilization in RBL-C3aR cells and human neutrophils with IC(50)s of 27.7 and 28 nM, respectively. SB 290157 was selective for the C3aR in that it did not antagonize the C5aR or six other chemotactic G protein-coupled receptors. Functional antagonism was not solely limited to the human C3aR; SB 290157 also inhibited C3a-induced Ca(2+) mobilization of RBL-2H3 cells expressing the mouse and guinea pig C3aRS: It potently inhibited C3a-mediated ATP release from guinea pig platelets and inhibited C3a-induced potentiation of the contractile response to field stimulation of perfused rat caudal artery. Furthermore, in animal models, SB 290157, inhibited neutrophil recruitment in a guinea pig LPS-induced airway neutrophilia model and decreased paw edema in a rat adjuvant-induced arthritis model. This selective antagonist may be useful to define the physiological and pathophysiological roles of the C3aR.  相似文献

The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae uses the pyruvate dehydrogenase-bypass for acetyl-CoA biosynthesis. This relatively inefficient pathway limits production potential for acetyl-CoA-derived biochemical due to carbon loss and the cost of two high-energy phosphate bonds per molecule of acetyl-CoA. Here, we attempted to improve acetyl-CoA production efficiency by introducing heterologous acetylating aldehyde dehydrogenase and phosphoketolase pathways for acetyl-CoA synthesis to enhance production of the sesquiterpene trans-nerolidol. In addition, we introduced auxin-mediated degradation of the glucose-dependent repressor Mig1p to allow induced expression of GAL promoters on glucose so that production potential on glucose could be examined. The novel genes that we used to reconstruct the heterologous acetyl-CoA pathways did not sufficiently complement the loss of endogenous acetyl-CoA pathways, indicating that superior heterologous enzymes are necessary to establish fully functional synthetic acetyl-CoA pathways and properly explore their potential for nerolidol synthesis. Notwithstanding this, nerolidol production was improved twofold to a titre of ˜ 900 mg l−1 in flask cultivation using a combination of heterologous acetyl-CoA pathways and Mig1p degradation. Conditional Mig1p depletion is presented as a valuable strategy to improve the productivities in the strains engineered with GAL promoters-controlled pathways when growing on glucose.  相似文献

CyaY is the bacterial ortholog of frataxin, a small mitochondrial iron binding protein thought to be involved in iron sulphur cluster formation. Loss of frataxin function leads to the neurodegenerative disorder Friedreich's ataxia. We have solved the solution structure of CyaY and used the structural information to map iron binding onto the protein surface. Comparison of the behavior of wild-type CyaY with that of a mutant indicates that specific binding with a defined stoichiometry does not require aggregation and that the main binding site, which hosts both Fe(2+) and Fe(3+), occupies a highly anionic surface of the molecule. This function is conserved across species since the corresponding region of human frataxin is also able to bind iron, albeit with weaker affinity. The presence of secondary binding sites on CyaY, but not on frataxin, hints at a possible polymerization mechanism. We suggest mutations that may provide further insights into the frataxin function.  相似文献
