Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are reported to interfere with chemical reactions involving free radical production. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a strong antioxidant with some neuroprotective activities. The purpose of this study was to examine and compare the neuroprotective effects of EMF and CoQ10 in a mouse model of hippocampal injury. Hippocampal injury was induced in mature female mice (25–30 g), using an intraperitoneal injection of trimethyltin hydroxide (TMT; 2.5 mg/kg). The experimental groups were exposed to EMF at a frequency of 50 Hz and intensity of 5.9 mT for 7 hr daily over 1 week or treated with CoQ10 (10 mg/kg) for 2 weeks following TMT injection. A Morris water maze apparatus was used to assess learning and spatial memory. Nissl staining and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) tests were also performed for the histopathological analysis of the hippocampus. Antiapoptotic genes were studied, using the Western blot technique. The water maze test showed memory improvement following treatment with CoQ10 and coadministration of CoQ10 + EMF. The Nissl staining and TUNEL tests indicated a decline in necrotic and apoptotic cell count following treatment with CoQ10 and coadministration of CoQ10 + EMF. The Western blot study indicated the upregulation of antiapoptotic genes in treatment with CoQ10, as well as coadministration. Also, treatment with EMF had no significant effects on reducing damage induced by TMT in the hippocampus. According to the results, EMF had no significant neuroprotective effects in comparison with CoQ10 on hippocampal injury in mice. Nevertheless, coadministration of EMF and CoQ10 could improve the neuroprotective effects of CoQ10. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Brief family intervention may have a positive impact on family caregivers to patients with mental disorders. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of a group psycho-educational program on family caregivers to patients with schizophrenia and mood disorders. METHOD: This randomized controlled trial was performed on 100 caregivers to patients with mental disorders attending Isfahan Behavioral Sciences Research Center, Isfahan, Iran. 100 family caregivers of patients with schizophrenia (n=50) and mood disorders (n=50) were selected and assigned randomly to either a psycho-educational group intervention or routine care in each diagnosis category. The caregivers were followed up for a period of 3 months. Caregiver burden was assessed using the Zarit Burden Interview. RESULTS: The burden decreased significantly in the group that participated in the psycho-educational program. The mean scores of the Zarit caregiver burden scale decreased, while scores in the control group did not change significantly. CONCLUSION: This group intervention program was effective for the Iranian studied population to reduce the caregiver burden in both categories of mental disorder. It may potentially improve the quality of life of both patients and caregivers by improving the standards of care giving. 相似文献

The present study describes the response of a bacterial strain, isolated from a hot spring in an area with the highest levels of natural radiation, under radium ((226)Ra) stress. The bacterium has been characterized as a novel and efficient radium biosorbent and identified as a variant of Serratia marcescens by biochemical tests and molecular recognition. In order to gain insights into key cellular events that allow this strain to survive and undergo (226)Ra adaptation and biosorption, the strain was tested under two experimental conditions of 1000 and 6000 Bq (226)Ra stress. A proteomic approach involving two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry was used to identify the differentially expressed proteins under (226)Ra stress. Functional assessment of identified proteins with significantly altered expression levels revealed several mechanisms thought to be involved in (226)Ra adaptation and conferring resistant phenotype to the isolate, including general stress adaptation, anti-oxidative stress, protein and nucleic acid synthesis, energy metabolism, efflux and transport proteins. It suggests that this strain through evolution is particularly well adapted to the high background radiation environment and could represent an alternative source to remove (226)Ra from such areas as well as industrial radionuclide polluted wastewaters. 相似文献

Purpose
Define criteria for iris-related parameters in an adult open angle population as measured with swept source Fourier domain anterior segment optical coherence tomography (ASOCT).Methods
Ninety-eight eyes of 98 participants with open angles were included and stratified into 5 age groups (18–35, 36–45, 46–55, 56–65, and 66–79 years). ASOCT scans with 3D mode angle analysis were taken with the CASIA SS-1000 (Tomey Corporation, Nagoya, Japan) and analyzed using the Anterior Chamber Analysis and Interpretation software. Anterior iris surface length (AISL), length of scleral spur landmark (SSL) to pupillary margin (SSL-to-PM), iris contour ratio (ICR = AISL/SSL-to-PM), pupil radius, radius of iris centroid (RICe), and iris volume were measured. Outcome variables were summarized for all eyes and age groups, and mean values among age groups were compared using one-way analysis of variance. Stepwise regression analysis was used to investigate demographic and ocular characteristic factors that affected each iris-related parameter. Results
Mean (±SD) values were 2.24 mm (±0.46), 4.06 mm (±0.27), 3.65 mm (±0.48), 4.16 mm (±0.47), 1.14 (±0.04), 1.51 mm2 (±0.23), and 38.42 μL (±4.91) for pupillary radius, RICe, SSL-to-PM, AISL, ICR, iris cross-sectional area, and iris volume, respectively. Both pupillary radius (P = 0.002) and RICe (P = 0.027) decreased with age, while SSL-to-PM (P = 0.002) and AISL increased with age (P = 0.001). ICR (P = 0.54) and iris volume (P = 0.49) were not affected by age.Conclusion
This study establishes reference values for iris-related parameters in an adult open angle population, which will be useful for future studies examining the role of iris changes in pathologic states. 相似文献9.

Ebola virus is a member of Filoviridae and cause severe human disease with 90 percent mortality. The life cycle of Ebola contains
an assembly stage which is mediated by VP40 proteins. VP40 subunits oligomerize and form ring-structures which are either
octamers or hexamers. Prevention of VP40 matrix protein assembly prevents virus particle formation as well as virus budding. In
the present study we simulated the biological condition for a single VP40 subunit. Then a library containing 120.000 drugs like
chemicals was used as the virtual screening database. Top 10 successive hits were then analyzed regarding absorption, distribution,
metabolism, and excretion properties. Moreover probable accessorial human protein targets and toxicity properties of successive
hits were analyzed by in silico tools. We found 4 chemicals that could bind VP40 subunits in a manner that by making an
interfering steric condense prevents matrix protein oligomerization. The pharmacokinetic and toxicity studies also validated the
potential of 4 finlay successive hits to be considered as a new anti-Ebola drugs. 相似文献
