Although many animal species consume herbaceous vegetation found in African tropical forests, little is known of the temporal and spatial availability of these plants. From September 2004 to August 2005 we conducted a study that quantified the temporal and spatial biomass availability of 20 species of herbs frequently consumed by endangered mountain gorillas at two locations (Buhoma and Ruhija) in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda. In general, the biomass of herbs varied over the study period, but these changes were relatively small. For 12 of 18 and nine of 11 species in Buhoma and Ruhija, respectively, herb biomass differed significantly among habitat types. Of the nine species found in both locations, seven species had a higher biomass at Ruhija, one species had a higher biomass at Buhoma, and one species showed no difference. These results demonstrate that herb biomass varied little temporally but spatial differences in herb biomass were more pronounced. Future studies should investigate the variables that may influence herb phenological patterns such as rainfall, light, soil quality, previous disturbance regimes, and animal foraging and trampling damage.  相似文献

alpha 1- and beta-adrenergic receptor properties of intact hepatocytes from adult male and female rats were evaluated in ligand binding studies using [3H]prazosin and [3H]CGP-12177 (4-(t-butylamino-2-hydroxypropoxy)-[5,7-3H]benzimidazole-2-one-HCl), a hydrophilic beta antagonist. Prior work had suggested that the response of hepatocytes from males to alpha 1-adrenergic stimulation was greater than that of cells from females. However, little sexual difference in prazosin affinity, number of binding sites or kinetics of association/dissociation with the cells was found. Epinephrine, [3H]prazosin competition for binding sites on intact cells was performed at 2 degrees C and 80-90% of agonist sites remained in a high affinity state with an epinephrine Kd comparable to that previously found in glucose release and phosphorylase alpha activation studies. Agonist Kd inferred from these competition experiments also showed no sexual dimorphism. These data suggest that the greater rise in the concentration of cytosolic free calcium and release of 45Ca from cells of males in response to epinephrine stimulation is not due to male/female alpha 1-receptor differences but, rather, may be a function of the previously observed sexual difference in cell calcium metabolism. [3H]CGP binding to hepatocytes from females was stereospecific, saturable and identified a single, high affinity site. Comparable sites were not found on cells from males, however, [3H]CGP binding to crude membrane preparations from both sexes was identical. This suggests that the loss of hepatic beta-receptor function in the adult male is due to an inaccessibility of beta-receptors at the external surface of the plasma membrane of the intact cell. Further studies with other beta-receptor ligands are being carried out to confirm these initial findings.  相似文献

New enzymes of nicotine catabolism instrumental in the detoxification of the tobacco alkaloid by Arthrobacter nicotinovorans pAO1 have been identified and characterized. Nicotine breakdown leads to the formation of nicotine blue from the hydroxylated pyridine ring and of gamma-N-methylaminobutyrate (CH(3)-4-aminobutyrate) from the pyrrolidine ring of the molecule. Surprisingly, two alternative pathways for the final steps in the catabolism of CH(3)-4-aminobutyrate could be identified. CH(3)-4-aminobutyrate may be demethylated to gamma-N-aminobutyrate by the recently identified gamma-N-methylaminobutyrate oxidase. In an alternative pathway, an amine oxidase with noncovalently bound FAD and of novel substrate specificity removed methylamine from CH(3)-4-aminobutyrate with the formation of succinic semialdehyde. Succinic semialdehyde was converted to succinate by a NADP(+)-dependent succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase. Succinate may enter the citric acid cycle completing the catabolism of the pyrrolidine moiety of nicotine. Expression of the genes of these enzymes was dependent on the presence of nicotine in the growth medium. Thus, two enzymes of the nicotine regulon, gamma-N-methylaminobutyrate oxidase and amine oxidase share the same substrate. The K(m) of 2.5 mM and k(cat) of 1230 s(-1) for amine oxidase vs. K(m) of 140 microM and k(cat) of 800 s(-1) for gamma-N-methylaminobutyrate oxidase, determined in vitro with the purified recombinant enzymes, may suggest that demethylation predominates over deamination of CH(3)-4-aminobutyrate. However, bacteria grown on [(14)C]nicotine secreted [(14)C]methylamine into the medium, indicating that the pathway to succinate is active in vivo.  相似文献

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda, is a small protected area (331 km2) within which there is large climatic and altitudinal variation. Therefore we compared habitat types and forest composition between two locations to investigate differences that may influence ecological conditions for large mammals, including endangered mountain gorillas. We demonstrate that there is considerable intersite variation in habitat types and spatial and temporal availability of vegetation resources of which the most apparent are the differences in species composition of plants and fruit availability. Buhoma (the lower altitude site) has a greater diversity of plant species and higher tree and shrub densities, yet has a much lower density of herbaceous vegetation eaten by gorillas compared with Ruhija. Fruit availability is significantly higher throughout the year in Buhoma compared with Ruhija. Both sites exhibit seasonal variation in fruit availability although they do not follow the same seasonal pattern, perhaps because of inherent asynchronous phenological differences amongst individual tree species. The results of this study are important because distribution and abundance of both terrestrial herbaceous vegetation and fruit resources are believed to influence aspects of feeding ecology for large mammals.  相似文献

Data on intraspecific dietary variability has important implications for understanding flexibility in foraging behavior, habitat utilization, population dynamics, and social behavior and may also assist in conservation efforts. We compared food availability and diet of a group of mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) at a high altitude site and 2 groups at a low altitude site in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda, from September 2001 to August 2002. Plant species diversity was greater at the low altitude site than at the high altitude site. The two groups at the low elevation consumed more plant species (140 species vs. 62 species), and a greater number of fruit species per mo (7 vs. 3 species) and per yr (36 vs. 11 species) than the high altitude group did. Furthermore, each group shared <51% of important fibrous food items in their diet with the 2 other groups. There is no significant difference in the proportion of days fruit remains were found in the dung among groups. Finally, according to Ivlev's electivity index, all groups positively selected the majority of food items in their diets. We attribute a large proportion of dietary variation between locations to differences in fruit availability and plant species composition between sites. Differences between groups at the low altitude site may be due to variation in food profitability—more profitable foods available to choose in the same area—within their overlapping home range, or group traditions. A comparison of our results with the diets of gorillas of the Virunga Volcanoes in Rwanda and Kahuzi-Biega, DRC shows that eastern gorilla populations have highly variable dietary patterns with limited overlap in species consumed among groups and populations.  相似文献

Determining the nutritional and phenolic basis of food preference is important for understanding the nutritional requirements of animals. Preference is a measure of which foods would be consumed by an animal if there was no variation in availability among food items. From September 2004 to August 2005, we measured the food preferences of four wild mountain gorilla groups that consume foliage and fruit in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda, to determine what nutrients and phenols are preferred and/or avoided. To do so, we asked the following questions: (1) Which plant species do the gorillas prefer? (2) Considering the different plant parts consumed of these preferred species, what nutrients and/or phenols characterize them? (3) Do the nutritional and phenolic characteristics of preferred foods differ among gorilla groups? We found that although some species were preferred and others were not, of those species found in common among the different group home ranges, the same ones were generally preferred by all groups. Second, all groups preferred leaves with relatively high protein content and relatively low fiber content. Third, three out of four groups preferred leaves with relatively high sugar amounts. Fourth, all groups preferred pith with relatively high sugar content. Finally, of the two groups tested, we found that the preferred fruits of one group had relatively high condensed tannin and fiber/sugar contents, whereas the other group's preferred fruits were not characterized by any particular nutrient/phenol. Overall, there were no differences among gorilla groups in nutritional and phenolic preferences. Our results indicate that protein and sugar are important in the diets of gorillas, and that the gorillas fulfil these nutritional requirements through a combination of different plant parts, shedding new light on how gorillas balance their diets in a variable environment. A virtually identical nicotine catabolic pathway including the heterotrimeric molybdenum enzyme nicotine and 6-hydroxy-pseudo-oxynicotine dehydrogenase, 6-hydroxy-l-nicotine oxidase, 2,6-dihydroxy-pseudo-oxynicotine hydrolase, and 2,6-dihydroxypyridine hydroxylase have been identified in A. nicotinovorans and Nocardioides sp. JS614. Enzymes catalyzing the same reactions and similar protein antigens were detected in the extracts of the two microorganisms. Nicotine blue and methylamine, two end products of nicotine catabolism were detected in the growth medium of both bacterial species. Nicotine catabolic genes are clustered on pAO1 in A. nicotinovorans, but located chromosomally in Nocardioides sp. JS614.  相似文献

Variability in ant eating has been observed in several populations of eastern and western gorillas. We investigated the occurrence of ant (Dorylus sp.) eating in two groups of mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) with overlapping home ranges within Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda from September 2001 to August 2002. We calculated the frequency of ant eating by an indirect method of analyzing fecal samples from silverbacks, adult females, and juveniles. One group consumed ants significantly more often than the other (3.3 vs 17.6% of days sampled). Furthermore, the group that consumed ants more often also consumed them on a seasonal basis (September–February monthly range: 0–8%; March–August monthly range: 30–42.9%). Finally, females and juveniles of this group consumed ants significantly more often than did the silverback (total samples containing ants: silverback, 2.1%; adult female, 13.2%; juvenile, 11.2%). Differences in ant eating between groups are likely due to variability in use of habitats where ants occur (particularly secondary forests). Surveys of ant densities in differing habitats, nutritional analysis of ants, and quantification of the amount of ants in their diets are necessary to understand if ant consumption is due to availability, nutritional value, group traditions, or taste preference.  相似文献
