Behavioural and ecological observations were made on young, reared Platax orbicularis in Opunohu Bay, Moorea, French Polynesia, during their transition from the pelagic, dispersive stage to the reef‐orientated demersal stage. Seventy‐two young P. orbicularis (17–75 mm standard length, LS) were released in the pelagic zone and 20 (40–70 mm LS) adjacent to the reefs. Swimming speed was slow (mean 5·2 cm s?1) and independent of size. An ontogenetic descent was observed: the smallest P. orbicularis swam at the surface, medium‐sized P. orbicularis swam in midwater (mean 5–13 m) and the largest P. orbicularis swam to the bottom, where many lay on their sides. Platax orbicularis swam southerly on average, away from the ocean and into the bay. Smaller P. orbicularis were more likely to swim directionally than larger individuals. Young P. orbicularis released near reef edges swam at similar, but more variable speeds (mean 6·6 cm s?1). About half of those released near reefs swam away, but fewer swam away from an inshore fringing reef than from a patch reef near the bay mouth. Many P. orbicularis swam up the slope onto the reef top, but the little settlement observed was near the reef base. Average, near‐reef swimming direction was also southerly. Some reef residents, in particular the triggerfish Balistapus undulatus, harassed young P. orbicularis. 相似文献

Three coral reef fish species, Zanclus cornutus, Chaetodon vagabundus and Naso lituratus, were collected in French Polynesia and on the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland. These fish species were each infected by one morphologically similar digenean species in both localities; Schistorchis zancli Hanson, 1953 was found in Zanclus cornutus, Preptetos laguncula Bray and Cribb, 1996 in Naso lituratus and Neohypocreadium dorsoporum Machida and Uchida, 1987 in Chaetodon vagabundus. In addition, on the Great Barrier Reef P. laguncula was also found in Naso unicornis and N. dorsoporum in Chaetodon ephippium and Chaetodon flavirostris. Morphometric differences between the species from the two sites were only slight. Sequences from the second internal transcribed spacer of the ribosomal DNA of each worm revealed total homology or negligible divergence between samples from hosts caught in French Polynesia and on the Great Barrier Reef. These results show that across more than 6000 km these digeneans are similar in morphology and genotype. Some species of fishes and molluscs are considered to have distributions that encompass the entire tropical Indo-West Pacific. These findings suggest that at least some of their parasites have similarly broad distributions. 相似文献

Quinolin-2-ones bearing a heteroaryl-piperazine linked by a two carbon chain at the 3- or 4-position were synthesised and evaluated as mixed 5-HT(1B)/5-HT(2A) receptor antagonists. Potent mixed antagonists were obtained with thieno[3,2-c]pyridine derivatives. In this series, compound 2.1 (SL 65.0472) proved to be functional antagonist at both the 5-HT(2A) receptor (rat in vivo 5-HT-induced hypertension model) and the 5-HT(1B) receptor (dog in vitro saphenous vein assay). 相似文献

Recruiting coral reef fish larvae from 38 species and 19 families from New Caledonia were examined for parasites. We found 13 parasite species (Platyhelminthes: Monogenea, Cestoda and Trematoda) but no acanthocephalan, crustacean or nematode parasites. Over 23% of individual fish were infected. Didymozoid metacercariae were the most abundant parasites. We conclude that most of the parasites are pelagic species that become ‘lost’ once the fish larvae have recruited to the reef. Larval coral reef fish probably contribute little to the dispersal of the parasites of the adult fish so that parasite dispersal is more difficult than that of the fish themselves. 相似文献

The 9 km2 uplifted lagoon of Taiaro Atoll (15°45′S, 144°38′W) is hypersaline due to its isolation from the ocean, yet it contains a
high diversity of fish. The question unifying our expedition was to discover whether these assemblages could be self-sustaining
despite very limited contact with the ocean. Although we were constrained by time, collections of fish larvae showed that
some species can complete their life-cycle within the lagoon, while others differed genetically between the lagoon and the
ocean, consistent with restricted gene flow. The lagoon contained few oceanic species of zooplankton, confirming its general
isolation, but nevertheless some fish species may depend upon infrequent colonisation from the ocean (when large waves drive
water over the normally dry reef crest). Isotopic signatures in fish otoliths suggest the basis for a more definitive and
inclusive test of the sources of the lagoonal assemblage.

In the rat brain, the presynaptic 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) autoreceptors located on 5-HT terminals correspond to the 5-HT1B subtype. The presence of a 5-HT receptor probably located on 5-HT nerve endings and modulating transmitter release in the human neocortex has been reported, but its detailed pharmacological characterization is not yet available. On the other hand, receptor binding and autoradiographic results indicate that the 5-HT1B receptor subtype is not present in the human brain. We, therefore, studied the modulation of the electrically evoked release of [3H]5-HT by various 5-HT receptor agonists and antagonists in preloaded slices of human neocortex obtained from 18 patients undergoing neurosurgery. The nonselective 5-HT1A/1B/1D receptor agonist 5-carboxamidotryptamine produced a potent inhibition (70% at 0.03 microM) of the electrically evoked release of [3H]5-HT which was blocked by 5-HT receptor antagonists with the following relative order of potency: methiothepin greater than metergoline = methysergide greater than propranolol. The selective 5-HT1A receptor agonist 8-hydroxy-2-(di-n-propylamino)tetralin at 0.1 microM did not modify the electrically evoked release of [3H]5-HT. The 5-HT1A/1B receptor agonist RU 24969 was 10 times more potent at inhibiting [3H]5-HT overflow in the rat frontal cortex than in the human neocortex. The potent 5-HT1B receptor antagonist cyanopinodolol did not modify the 5-carboxamidotryptamine-induced inhibition of the electrically evoked release of [3H]5-HT in slices of the human neocortex, but produced by itself a small inhibition of [3H]5-HT overflow.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献

The study examined the effects of coastal embankment building on fish recruitment in three habitat types (beach-rock, white
sand and muddy sand) in the near shore and fringing reef habitats of Moorea lagoon (French Polynesia). The results showed
a positive relationship between the presence of embankments and the density and species richness of juvenile fish along the
shoreline (whatever the habitat types). However, embankments deteriorated adjacent fringing reefs (decrease of live coral),
which led to a decrease of fish density on beach-rock and white sand sites, and a decrease of fish species richness on muddy
sand sites. 相似文献

Cannabinoid receptor CB1 is expressed abundantly in the brain and presumably in the peripheral tissues responsible for energy metabolism. It is unclear if the antiobesity effects of rimonabant, a CB1 antagonist, are mediated through the central or the peripheral CB1 receptors. To address this question, we generated transgenic mice with central nervous system (CNS)-specific knockdown (KD) of CB1, by expressing an artificial microRNA (AMIR) under the control of the neuronal Thy1.2 promoter. In the mutant mice, CB1 expression was reduced in the brain and spinal cord, whereas no change was observed in the superior cervical ganglia (SCG), sympathetic trunk, enteric nervous system, and pancreatic ganglia. In contrast to the neuronal tissues, CB1 was undetectable in the brown adipose tissue (BAT) or the liver. Consistent with the selective loss of central CB1, agonist-induced hypothermia was attenuated in the mutant mice, but the agonist-induced delay of gastrointestinal transit (GIT), a primarily peripheral nervous system-mediated effect, was not. Compared to wild-type (WT) littermates, the mutant mice displayed reduced body weight (BW), adiposity, and feeding efficiency, and when fed a high-fat diet (HFD), showed decreased plasma insulin, leptin, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, and elevated adiponectin levels. Furthermore, the therapeutic effects of rimonabant on food intake (FI), BW, and serum parameters were markedly reduced and correlated with the degree of CB1 KD. Thus, KD of CB1 in the CNS recapitulates the metabolic phenotype of CB1 knockout (KO) mice and diminishes rimonabant's efficacy, indicating that blockade of central CB1 is required for rimonabant's antiobesity actions. 相似文献

In marine species with a pelagic larval stage, search behavior and selection of a suitable reef habitat can maximize the settlement success of recently settled juveniles and their subsequent performance (growth and survival of juveniles). Our objective was to test this hypothesis for a single target coral reef fish species (Chromis viridis) at Moorea Island. C. viridis settle on living coral colonies of Porites rus already populated with conspecifics. In the present study (conducted in experimental cages), we found that: 1) mortality rate of recently settled juveniles of C. viridis was lower in the settlement habitat (living coral colonies of P. rus) than in other habitats having physical structure different from those of P. rus colonies; 2) C. viridis juveniles preferentially colonized coral heads of P. rus with conspecifics present rather than uninhabited coral heads and they also preferentially colonized uninhabited coral heads rather than coral heads with heterospecifics; 3) mortality rate of C. viridis juveniles did not vary with the presence or absence of conspecifics or heterospecifics on P. rus colonies. Overall, the study allows us to highlight that site selection by juveniles for habitat containing conspecifics does not benefit their short term mortality rates, suggesting that in the short term at least, site selection has little importance. 相似文献
