ABSTRACT. Larval Trichoplusia ni (Hübner) (Noctuidae) parasitized by Chelonus sp. (near curvimaculatus ) (Braconidae) precociously initiated pupation during the penultimate fourth instar. The temporal sequence of developmental markers exhibited by parasitized T. ni closely matched the temporal sequence in normal, pupating larvae. The parasitized larvae did not complete pupation, but consistently stopped development at a stage recognizable by a certain set of markers. This halt was observed in hosts from which parasites emerged and from hosts which had been stung but from which no parasites emerged. Weight gain and food consumption by parasitized hosts were significantly lower than normal, although most reached the fourth instar at the same time as normal larvae. Measurement of head capsule widths indicated that the width in precociously pupating larvae was less than the critical width associated with attainment of the pupation instar of normal larvae.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the potential for lightacclimation in shade grown seedlings of Bischofia javanica Blume.The seedlings were grown under simulated forest shade light(40 µmol m–2 s–1), and after transfer to ahigher light level (1200 µmol m–2 s–1), chlorophyllfluorescence induction kinetics, net photosynthesis, and changesin leaf chlorophylls and leaf anatomy were examined in leavesthat were fully developed prior to the transfer. The low-light (LL) leaf displayed photoinhibition immediatelyafter transfer to high-light (HL). This photo-inhibition wassubstantial, and continued for several days. Chlorophyll bleachingoccurred only after a certain degree of photoinhibition hadproceeded. Photosynthetic light acclimation commenced immediatelyafter severe photoinhibition. An increase in chlorophylls perunit leaf area was also immediate after severe bleaching. Thechanges in leaf chlorophylls over time were consistent withthe visual observations of bleaching and recovery. The leafweight per unit leaf area increased gradually on transfer toHL and finally it approached that of the newly formed HL leaf.Although fully expanded prior to transfer to HL, the leaf thicknesswas increased by about 45% and the leaf tissues became denserwithout changing the leaf area and the stomatal density. Finally,the net photosynthetic rate per unit leaf area was higher thanthat before exposure by 75% but less than that of newly formedHL leaf by more than 30%. Moreover, leaf movements were observedafter exposure to HL and also the formation of short epicormicshoots with a cluster of small leaves on the lower part of thestem during light acclimation. It is concluded that the fully expanded shade leaf has a wideacclimation plasticity. In addition to leaf acclimation, wholeplant responses such as leaf movements, the formation of epicormicshoots and the production of new ‘sun-type’ leavesunder HL may be of crucial importance to the success of thespecies following opening of the canopy. The effects of site of application, growth environment, droplet size, and formulation adjuvants on the retention and uptake of 14C-chlormequat by wheat cv. Avalon and barley cv. Sonja have been examined using solutions applied by a micro-sprayer. Wheat plants retained a higher proportion of droplets on initial impaction than barley irrespective of growth stage, site of application or formulation. Leaf retention increased approximately two-fold with increase in surfactant concentration (0·03·0–3% w/v) or decrease in droplet size (200-125 μm) but declined markedly with age of leaf. Uptake, which was greater into wheat than barley, increased with increase in surfactant concentration, growth temperature and droplet size, with a combination of decrease in irradiance plus a rise in soil moisture, and after exposure to simulated dew. Droplet reflection increased and chlormequat uptake declined when the fungicide preparations Bavistin and Radar replaced Agral 90 in the spray mixtures. Droplets impacted more readily and spread more extensively over the damaged surfaces of field grown leaves. Both tissue combustion and autoradiography showed that chlormequat translocated readily only in immature tissues.  相似文献

Abstract. The boundary layer resistance of model leaves was measured in still air, at a range of leaf-to-air temperature differences. The results were compared to those calculated from standard formulae for natural convection. The agreement between observed and calculated was only satisfactory when Grashof numbers exceeded about 105. At the lower Grashof numbers, which often prevail in nature, the observed rates of heat transfer considerably exceeded those calculated.  相似文献

Festuca arundinacea was grown at high and low wind-speeds attwo levels of soil water. Transpiration was increased at highwind-speed and accompanied by leaf water stress. Asian green mussels (Perna viridis) belonging to the family Mytilidae are native to the coastal and tropical marine waters of the Indo‐Pacific region. Ten polymorphic microsatellites were isolated and their polymorphisms were determined in 36 individuals. The average allele number of the 10 microsatellites was 11.7/locus with a range of two to 24 and the expected heterozygosity averaged at 0.69, ranging from 0.18 to 0.94. Eight out of 10 microsatellites agreed with the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium and showed independent segregation. These microsatellites will facilitate the studying of the genetic diversity and population structure of the green mussel in and outside of the Indo‐Pacific region of Asia.  相似文献

Photosynthetic leaf traits were determined for savanna and forest ecosystems in West Africa, spanning a large range in precipitation. Standardized major axis fits revealed important differences between our data and reported global relationships. Especially for sites in the drier areas, plants showed higher photosynthetic rates for a given N or P when compared with relationships from the global data set. The best multiple regression for the pooled data set estimated Vcmax and Jmax from NDW and S. However, the best regression for different vegetation types varied, suggesting that the scaling of photosynthesis with leaf traits changed with vegetation types. A new model is presented representing independent constraints by N and P on photosynthesis, which can be evaluated with or without interactions with S. It assumes that limitation of photosynthesis will result from the least abundant nutrient, thereby being less sensitive to the allocation of the non‐limiting nutrient to non‐photosynthetic pools. The model predicts an optimum proportionality for N and P, which is distinct for Vcmax and Jmax and inversely proportional to S. Initial tests showed the model to predict Vcmax and Jmax successfully for other tropical forests characterized by a range of different foliar N and P concentrations.  相似文献
