Transfer of sediments from shallow shelf to basin usually implies vertical (stratigraphic) reworking of fossils, but in a few instances produces only lateral reworking (actually within the time span of a subzone). An Upper Devonian (Frasnian) pelagic carbonate sequence with allodapic intercalations and thick intraclast parabreccias triggered by seismic shocks and related tsunami and turbidity currents has been studied. Here, the standard biozone sequence is undisturbed at the zonal as well as the subzonal level. However, distribution of conodonts is discontinuous, and ranges of some important species are altered; mature specimens are commonly broken, whereas complete specimens are mostly juvenile forms. Maxima and minima of element frequency and anomalous thickening or thinning of subzones are recognized. Such distribution patterns of conodonts are compared with the four main facies distinguished and related to the environmental interpretation (a platform-basin system, the original gentle slope of which was fragmenting in fault-controlled blocks). The mean frequency of shallow-water, proximal conodonts is 10% whereas transitional to distal deeper-water genera dominate throughout the entire section. In the dominant biofacies, conodonts settled vertically, in the subordinate one they were transported laterally. The 'intraclast parabreccia' is interpreted as a peculiar type of seismitc. The anomalous thickness variation of biozones is related to the step topography of the slope in a fault-controlled carbonate basin.  相似文献

Analysis of holocentric mitotic metaphase chromosomes of the peach‐potato aphid Myzus persicae (Sulzer) clone 33H revealed different chromosome numbers, ranging from 12 to 17 within each embryo, in contrast to the standard karyotype of this species (2n = 12). Chromosome length measurements revealed that the observed chromosomal mosaicism is the result of recurrent fragmentations of chromosomes X, 1 and 3 because of fragile sites or hot spots of recombination. Fluorescent in situ hybridization experiments showed that X chromosomes were frequently involved in recurrent fragmentations, in particular their telomeric end opposite to the nucleolar organizer region. Experiments to induce males showed that M. persicae clone 33H is obligately parthenogenetic. The reproduction by apomictic parthenogenesis, together with a high telomerase expression that stabilized the chromosomes involved in the fragmentations observed in the M. persicae clone 33H, appears to favour the stabilization of the observed chromosome instability. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 105 , 350–358.  相似文献

Six microsatellite loci were identified and characterized in the eastern form of the widespread and commercially important giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii). The loci were detected by randomly screening for dinucleotide and trinucleotide repeat units within a partial genomic library developed for the species. In a sample of 29 prawns, number of alleles and heterozygosity per locus ranged from 12 to 18 and from 0.66 to 0.90, respectively. These markers provide powerful tools for the conservation and management of wild stocks, the improvement of cultured stocks of M. rosenbergii, and for investigating evolutionary processes underlying genetic divergence among populations.  相似文献

We have developed a new staining procedure that combines the traditional Gram staining for bacteria and the Weber's chromotrope staining method, the standard technique for the detection of microsporidia spores in clinical Specimens. This “Gram-chromotrope” staining technique enhances the staining characteristics of microsporidia spores and facilitates the easy detection and differentiation of spores from other microorganisms that are found in clinical specimens, especially stool samples. This new technique is fast, reliable, and simple to perform, and can be easily adapted for use in clinical laboratories.  相似文献

Two cultivars (Mec and Chiarano) of wheat (Triticum aestivum)were exposed to constant low levels of SO2 (35, 75 and 120 nll–1) over a period of 4 months. In previous studies Mechas been shown to be more sensitive to SO2 and this has beenconfirmed in the present study where Mec showed a greater tendencythan Chiarano to accumulate soluble non-protein SH compounds,principally glutathione and cysteine. The reduced glutathione to oxidized glutathione ratio (GSH/GSSG)increased significantly in Mec with SO2 treatment, but no changein the activity of glutathione reductase was observed. ABSTRACT. Positive phonotaxis to tape recorded conspecific song by males of the katydid Neoconocephalus affinis (Beauvois) (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) was studied in the field, in Puerto Rico. N.affinis males stridulated loudly during evening hours, and most males were territorial. Aggression between neighbours occurred, albeit rarely, and playback experiments using tape recordings of N.affinis song showed that aggressive behaviour, in the form of jumps directed toward a loudspeaker, could be elicited from a male by song broadcast above a threshold sound intensity. Response thresholds for different males varied from 76 to 93 dB, intensities that corresponded to calculated inter-neighbour distances of 1.6-0.26 m, respectively. Insects that had lower response thresholds were on average more isolated from neighbours and also stridulated more persistently and at a higher sound intensity than insects with higher response thresholds. N.affinis males displayed no phonotaxis toward the song of Neoconocephalus maxillosus , a sympatric species whose song is similar to that of N.affinis in principal frequency but differs in wingstroke rate. Phonotaxis toward conspecific song could only be elicited from males while they were silent.  相似文献

Genetic diversity and identification of simple sequence repeat markers correlated with Fusarium wilt resistance was performed in a set of 36 elite cultivated pigeonpea genotypes differing in levels of resistance to Fusarium wilt. Twenty-four polymorphic sequence repeat markers were screened across these genotypes, and amplified a total of 59 alleles with an average high polymorphic information content value of 0.52. Cluster analysis, done by UPGMA and PCA, grouped the 36 pigeonpea genotypes into two main clusters according to their Fusarium wilt reaction. Based on the Kruskal–Wallis ANOVA and simple regression analysis, six simple sequence repeat markers were found to be significantly associated with Fusarium wilt resistance. The phenotypic variation explained by these markers ranged from 23.7 to 56.4%. The present study helps in finding out feasibility of prescreened SSR markers to be used in genetic diversity analysis and their potential association with disease resistance.  相似文献

THE concentrations of tryptophan normally present in the mammalian brain are below the Michaelis constant (Km) of tryptophan hydroxylase1,2, suggesting that the rate of serotonin synthesis depends more on the concentration of brain tryptophan than on the amount of enzyme. We wish to report that various treatments which have been shown to increase brain serotonin synthesis also increase the concentration of tryptophan in brain. Conversely, p-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA), which inhibits serotonin synthesis3, decreases tryptophan in brain.  相似文献
