The changes accompanying the transition from the gregarious to the solitary phase state in locusts are so drastic that for a long time these phases were considered as distinct species. It was Boris Uvarov who introduced the concept of polyphenism. Decades of research revealed that phase transition implies changes in morphometry, the color of the cuticle, behavior and several aspects of physiology. In particular, in the recent decade, quite a number of molecular studies have been undertaken to uncover phase-related differences. They resulted in novel insights into the role of corazonin, neuroparsins, some protease inhibitors, phenylacetonitrile and so on. The advent of EST-databases of locusts (e.g. Kang et al., 2004) is a most encouraging novel development in physiological and behavioral locust research. Yet, the answer to the most intriguing question, namely whether or not there is a primordial molecular inducer of phase transition, is probably not within reach in the very near future.  相似文献

As in many fungi, asexual reproduction of Mycosphaerella graminicola in planta is a complex process that requires proper differentiation of the infectious hyphae in the substomatal cavities of foliar tissue before pycnidia with conidia can be formed. In this study, we have investigated the role of the cAMP signalling pathway in development and pathogenicity of this pathogen by disruption of the genes encoding the catalytic (designated MgTpk2 ) and regulatory subunit (designated MgBcy1 ) of protein kinase A. The MgTpk2 and MgBcy1 mutants showed altered phenotypes in vitro when grown under different growth conditions. On potato dextrose agar (PDA), MgBcy1 mutants showed altered osmosensitivity and reduced melanization, whereas the MgTpk2 mutants showed accelerated melanization when compared with the M. graminicola IPO323 wild-type strain and ectopic transformants. MgTpk2 mutants also secreted a dark-brown pigment into yeast glucose broth medium. In germination and microconidiation assays, both mutants showed a germination pattern similar to that of the controls on water agar, whereas on PDA filamentous growth of MgTpk2 mutants was impaired. Pathogenicity assays showed that the MgTpk2 and MgBcy1 mutants were less virulent as they caused only limited chlorotic and necrotic symptoms at the tips of the inoculated leaves. Further analyses of the infection process showed that MgTpk2 and MgBcy1 mutants were able to germinate, penetrate and colonize mesophyll tissue, but were unable to produce the asexual fructifications, which was particularly due to inappropriate differentiation during the late stage of this morphogenesis-related process.  相似文献

The seed coats of Digitalis purpurea L. cv. Gloxiniaflora werecultured for indigenous fungi. Alternaria alternata (Fries)was identified as the sole fungus on seeds freshly harvestedfrom unopened capsules, whereas A. alternata, Rhizopus arrhizus(Fischer), Penicillium sp. and other fungi appeared on storedseeds. The appearance of fungi in seed cultures was seasonal,being more frequent in winter and early spring than in summerand autumn. Alternaria grew well on autoclaved seeds, on dehiscentseed coats, or on seed coats separated from the embryos of ungerminatedseeds. Rhizopus did not grow on these but grew weakly on theculture medium from viable seeds. A. alternata appears to functionas a degradation agent for the seed coat subsequent to germination.Neither fungus was found to be essential to germination of Digitalisseeds. Bioassay of the culture medium from germinating seedsshowed that a fungistat effective against both Alternaria andRhizopus is produced coincident with germination. Based on chromatographicanalysis, the fungistat appears to be a cardenolide. In Sweden, most patients are recruited into biobank research by non‐researcher doctors. Patients' trust in doctors may therefore be important to their willingness to participate. We suggest a model of trust that makes sense of such transitions of trust between domains and distinguishes adequate trust from mistaken trust. The unique position of doctors implies, we argue, a Kantian imperfect duty to compensate for patients' mistaken trust. There are at least three kinds of mistaken trust, each of which requires a different set of countermeasures. First, trust is mistaken when necessary competence is lacking; the competence must be developed or the illusion dispelled. Second, trust is irrational whenever the patient is mistaken about his actual reasons for trusting. Care must therefore be taken to support the patient's reasoning and moral agency. Third, some patients inappropriately trust doctors to recommend only research that will benefit them directly. Such trust should be counteracted by nurturing a culture where patients expect to be asked occasionally to contribute to the common good.  相似文献

Climate change is threatening tropical reefs across the world, with most scientists agreeing that the current changes in climate conditions are occurring at a much faster rate than in the past and are potentially beyond the capacity of reefs to adapt and recover. Current research in tropical ecosystems focuses largely on corals and fishes, although other benthic marine invertebrates provide crucial services to reef systems, with roles in nutrient cycling, water quality regulation, and herbivory. We review available information on the effects of environmental conditions associated with climate change on noncoral tropical benthic invertebrates, including inferences from modern and fossil records. Increasing sea surface temperatures may decrease survivorship and increase the developmental rate, as well as alter the timing of gonad development, spawning, and food availability. The broad latitudinal distribution and associated temperature ranges of several pantropical taxa suggest that some reef communities may have an in‐built adaptive capacity. Tropical benthic invertebrates will also show species‐specific sublethal and lethal responses to sea‐level rise, ocean acidification, physical disturbance, runoff, turbidity, sedimentation, and changes in ocean circulation. In order to accurately predict a species' response to these stressors, we must consider the magnitude and duration of exposure to each stressor, as well as the physiology, mobility, and habitat requirements of the species. Stressors will not act independently, and many organisms will be exposed to multiple stressors concurrently, including anthropogenic stressors. Environmental changes associated with climate change are linked to larger ecological processes, including changes in larval dispersal and recruitment success, shifts in community structure and range extensions, and the establishment and spread of invasive species. Loss of some species will trigger economic losses and negative effects on ecosystem function. Our review is intended to create a framework with which to predict the vulnerability of benthic invertebrates to the stressors associated with climate change, as well as their adaptive capacity. We anticipate that this review will assist scientists, managers, and policy‐makers to better develop and implement regional research and management strategies, based on observed and predicted changes in environmental conditions.  相似文献

In this paper we report on recently collected specimens of glass sponges belonging to Farreidae Gray, 1872, and Tretodictyidae Schulze, 1886 (Porifera: Hexactinellida: Hexactinosida). All specimens represent new geographical records for their genera: Coral Sea for Aspidoscopulia Reiswig, 2002 (Farreidae) and Psilocalyx Ijima, 1927 (Tretodictyidae); north‐west Atlantic for Sarostegia Topsent, 1904 (Farreidae). Two new species, Aspidoscopulia australia Dohrmann, Göcke & Janussen sp. nov. and Aspidoscopulia ospreya Dohrmann, Göcke & Janussen sp. nov. , are described. To investigate further the evolution of hexactinosidan sponges, we sequenced two nuclear (18S and 28S rDNA) and two mitochondrial [16S ribosomal rDNA, cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI)] genes from these specimens, as well as from a recently described new species of Lonchiphora Ijima, 1927 (Farreidae). Besides corroborating the monophyly of Tretodictyidae, our molecular phylogenetic analyses support a clade of clavule‐bearing sponges with a farreoid dictyonal framework (i.e. Farreidae sensu stricto). In contrast, Sarostegia, which lacks these features, appears unrelated to this clade – instead our data are consistent with an earlier placement of this genus in Euretidae Zittel, 1877. We introduce formally the taxon Sceptrulophora Mehl 1992, and emend the classification of Hexactinosida to reflect this move and our new findings regarding the position of Sarostegia. Finally, we discuss implications of the molecular phylogeny for the evolution of sceptrules, the defining autapomorphy of Sceptrulophora. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 163 , 1003–1025.  相似文献
