The present study examined seed dispersal and germination in three of the most threatened endemic labiates of Cyprus: Origanum cordifolium , Phlomis brevibracteata and Phlomis cypria ssp. occidentalis . Some common traits in these taxa can be correlated with their overall survival strategy. Seeds mature in mid to late summer, but most seeds remain on the mother plants until the beginning of the rainy season. The opening of the calyces containing the seeds seems to be caused by absorption of moisture. Water is also the most important dispersal factor because the seeds are dispersed by rain. Seed germination occurs at relatively low temperatures that prevail in the field at the beginning of the rainy season. This behavior provides the plants with ecological advantages because their seeds are exposed on the soil at the most appropriate period (mid to late autumn) for germination and seedling survival. The present study contributes substantially to in situ and ex situ conservation of these threatened plants.  相似文献

Greece is characterized by high plant diversity (5800 species) and endemism (15.6%). This study attempts a first overall assessment of the taxonomy, distribution, traits and conservation status of the Greek endemic plants. The endemic species belong to 56 families and 242 genera. Most of the endemic plants have a narrow geographical and altitudinal distribution range. The southern floristic regions are richer in endemic species. The species area relationships for endemics (EARs) for island and continental floristic regions explain over 50% of the variation in number of species and are characterized by steep curves. Analysis of the distributional pattern of the endemics by similarity coefficients offers useful insights into the palaeogeography and biogeography of Greece. The endemic species occur at all altitudes, but the altitudinal distribution shows a predominance of local endemics at 0–600 m in the island regions and in higher zones in the continental regions. The life form spectra show a predominance of hemicryptophytes and chamaephytes. This trait seems indicative of their habitat and adaptive strategy and may be related to speciation processes. At 25 °C germination of tomato (Lycopersicon lycopersicum)seeds is inhibited by continuous and intermittent far red illumination.It is also inhibited by a single 30 min far red irradiationgiven 8 h from the start of imbibition. The incubation of seedsin a mannitol solution inhibitory for germination has no effecton the final germination percentage after seeds are subsequentlytransferred to water. A 30 min far red irradiation at the timeof transfer results in partial inhibition of germination. Thisinhibition can be released by the continuation of osmotic incubationfor several days before the transfer to water. At the end ofa 7 d dark period of osmotic incubation, inhibition of subsequentgermination in water can be realized only by continuous farred illumination. Seeds osmotically pretreated for 7 d and afterwardsdried-back show a mean time to 50% germination significantlylower than that of untreated seeds. Moreover, besides singleand intermittent, even continuous far red light has no inhibitoryeffect on the germination of these seeds. It is concluded that,in addition to the already known germination advantages, osmoticpresowing treatment also induces the ability of seeds to germinateunder unfavourable light conditi.  相似文献

Sweet pepper seeds were osmotically conditioned in 0.4 M mannitolsolution for 4 d (at 25 °C, in darkness) before or afterstorage at 35 °C for up to six months, and their germinationand viability was compared with that of untreated seeds storedunder the same conditions. Seeds that had been osmoconditionedprior to storage retained a high rate of germination and germinatedto a high final percentage (from 80 to 50 per cent) at both15 and 25 °C throughout the storage period. By contrast,both the rate and total level of germination of untreated pepperseeds declined rapidly at both germination temperatures, andby three months of storage the total level of seed viabilitywas already less than 10 per cent. Seeds that were first storedat 35 °C, and then osmoconditioned just prior to germination,showed a decline in germinability which when tested at 25 °Cwas the same as for untreated seeds, while tested at 15 °Coccurred at a slightly slower rate than for untreated seeds. It is evident that osmoconditioning prior to storage, in additionto the acceleration of germination, resulted in a dramatic delayof the ageing rate, thus increasing considerably the longevityof seeds. On the other hand, osmoconditioning after storagedid not seem to have any significant effect on seed viability,though it enhanced the germination rate. Abstract. Seed germination characteristics were investigated in the most common Cistus species in Greece, namely C. incanus ssp. creticus and C. salvifolius. In addition to the soft seed subpopulation, both species produce a large fraction of hardcoated, water-impermeable seeds which can be softened and, thus, promoted to germinate by mechanical scarification and thermal pretreatment. Temperature and light control of seed germination are unimportant. In the ecological context of the Mediterranean ecosystems, the eventually advantageous, opportunistic strategy of germination is based on: (a) seed heterospermy (which allows the smaller, softcoated fraction to germinate promptly each year while the majority of the seeds, the hard ones, accumulate in the soil); (b) the seed population heterogeneity in relation to coat hardness (so that any heat conditions produced by fire induce the softening and germination of a certain seed fraction); (c) the notably low germination rate (which suppresses premature germination); (d) the wide, Mediterranean-type (relatively cool), temperature range of germination (while higher temperatures simply inhibit but do not induce any dormancy); and (c) the apparent lack of photo-sensitivity (enabling germination under every light regime). In non-fire years, the temporal distribution of field germination and seedling appearance might be partly determined by the seed dispersal strategy of the individual Cistus species. Nevertheless, the post-fire regeneration response is manifested in the form of a huge wave of germination (of practically all seeds softened by the fire heat), shortly after the onset of the rainy season.  相似文献

Photoinhibition of Seed Germination in Mediterranean Maritime Plants   总被引:4,自引:1,他引:3  
Photoinhibition of seed germination was shown for Allium staticiforme,Brassica tournefortii, Cakile maritima and Otanthus maritimus,all plant species inhabiting sandy coasts of the MediterraneanSea. Germination of A. staticiforme was found to be typicallyMediterranean in regard to its temperature range (>0–20°C), while B. tournefortii germinated optimally at intermediatetemperatures (15–25 °C). Light sensitivity was morepronounced in the latter species and 50 % inhibition of seedgermination was obtained with photon flux densities of approximately0.1 and 0.015 mol m–2 d–1 in A. staticiforme andB. tournefortii, respectively. However, the slopes of the regressionlines of germination plotted against the logarithm of whitelight flux density are similar in both species. From monthlyexperiments performed under fluctuating conditions of temperatureand light, simulating the elimate of Athens throughout the year,optimal germination response peaked in ‘winter’conditions for A. staticiforme, while a bimodal pattern wasobserved for B. tournefortii (maxima at the warm ends of therainy season). In contrast to the other plants, a fifth speciestested, Crithmum maritimum, showed an absolute light requirement,probably related to the rocky habitats of the species; the optimumgermination period coincided with the rainy season. Pot experimentswith seeds of the five species buried at various depths confirmedthat maximum emergence is favoured by shallow depths (0.5–1cm). It is concluded that seed germination in maritime plantsof the Mediterranean rim is mediated by a photoinhibition mechanismwhich can be considered an adaptation strategy against surfaceseedling establishment at the harsh, sandy or shingle, sea coasthabitats. The yellow horned-poppy Glaucium flavum Crantz shows a finaldark germination which is of characteristically ‘mediterranean’type (maximal response at the temperature range 5–15 °C),though a considerable broadening is brought about, both by ared light pulse and a stratification treatment. Seeds imbibedin darkness at 25 °C for even a few hours are induced todevelop a secondary dormancy (thermodormancy) which can be releasedby light and stratification. The well known time dependenceof light sensitivity and the gradually imposed induction oflight indifference at supraoptimal temperatures have also beenshown. The effects of osmoconditioning on the germination at 15 and25 °C of pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) seeds were studiedover a 3-year period with respect to temperature of storage.Untreated seeds stored at 5 °C showed high germinabilitythroughout the entire storage period, whereas untreated seedsstored at 25 °C showed a progressive decline in germinability,especially when assayed at 15 °C. Seeds that had been osmoconditionedprior to storage retained a high level of germinability irrespectiveof either storage or germination temperatures. When seeds thathad been stored at 25 °C were osmoconditioned after storage,there was a significantly higher germinability (assayed at 15 °C) in comparison with the corresponding untreated seeds.Seeds that were osmoconditioned twice (prior to and after storage)germinated in a similar way to those that had been osmoconditionedonce only Lactuca saliva L., lettuce, Hordeum oulgare L., barley, seed storage, moisture content, relative humidity, water potential, temperature, oxygen  相似文献
