Energy and plastic metabolism of the heart muscle in rabbits undergoing thyroid irradiation with decimeter waves

The functional state of myocardial mitochondria, the glycogen and nucleic acid contents in myocardium, and morphometry of structural elements of cardiomyocytes and myocardial capillary network were investigated in order to select the optimal regimen of decimeter wave exposures with power density of 10, 120 and 240 mW/cm2 on the area of thyroid gland. It was shown that the thyroid gland exposure to decimeter waves at these intensities resulted in functional shifts in energy and plastic processes in myocardium and capillary blood supply. These changes increased to a considerable extent as the intensity of exposure was increasing and reached the maximum at power density of 240 mW/cm2 but event at this intensity there was not found the injurious effect of decimeter waves on the myocardium.     

The immunomodulating action of microwaves in the induction of an immune response to Vi antigen

In this work the possibility of using microwaves for immunomodulation in the immunization of animals with thymus-independent antigen was studied. The projection zones of the thymus and adrenal glands of the test animals were subjected to the action of decimeter, or ultrahigh frequency (UHF), waves, while the corresponding zones of the control animals were subjected to imitation UHF irradiation. Vi-antigen was shown to be a thymus-independent antigen for rabbits (according to the results of the evaluation of the functional state of thymocytes, as manifested by the adsorption of acridine orange by the chromatin of thymocyte nuclei and by the content of RNA and DNA in the thymus). The action of UHF waves on the projection zone of the thymus was accompanied by a decrease in the glucocorticoid activity of the adrenal cortex, observed simultaneously with a pronounced immunostimulating effect. The UHF irradiation of the zone of the adrenal glands was accompanied by immunosuppression in combination with enhanced glucocorticoid activity of the adrenal cortex.     

Macroinvertebrates as bioindicators of water quality in the Mkondoa River,Tanzania, in an agricultural area

The suitability of using macroinvertebrates as bioindicators of stream water quality was tested in the Mkondoa River in an agricultural area at Kilosa, using the rapid bioassessment protocol. The family biotic index (FBI) showed marked variation in water quality along the stream from values ranging from 4.1 to 5.0 in the upstream reaches, indicating good water quality, 5.3 to 5.5 in the mid-reaches and 6.0 to 6.5 in the lower reaches. The water quality index (WQI) indicated that water quality was fair (77 ± 0.98) in the upstream reach of the Mkondoa, marginal (55 ± 0.86) in the midstream reach and poor (33 ± 0.45) in the downstream reach. There were significant relationships between biological oxygen demand and dissolved oxygen and the occurrence of specific taxa, mainly Chironomus and Caenis. Significant changes in macroinvertebrate abundance were mostly related to changes in water quality. As in other parts of the world, macroinvertebrate communities proved to be good biological indicators of water quality and they should be used as bioindicators in long-term monitoring of this river.     

Myosin light-chain expression during avian muscle development

Monoclonal antibodies to adult chicken myosin light chains were generated and used to quantitate the types of myosin light-chain (MLC) isoforms expressed during development of the pectoralis major (PM), anterior latissimus dorsi (ALD), and medial adductor (MA) muscles of the chicken. These are muscles which, in the adult, are composed predominantly of fast, slow, and a mixture of fiber types, respectively. Three distinct phases of MLC expression characterized the development of the PM and MA muscles. The first identifiable pase occurred during the period of 5-7 d of incubation in ovo. Extracts of muscles from the pectoral region (which included the presumptive PM muscle) contained only fast MLC isoforms. This period of exclusive fast light-chain synthesis was followed by a phase (8- 12 d of incubation in ovo) in which coexpression of both fast and slow MLC isoforms was apparent in both PM and MA muscles. During the period, the composition of both fast and slow MLC isoforms in the PM and MA muscles was identical. Beginning at day 12 in ovo, the ALD was also subjected to immunochemical analyses. The proportion of fast and slow MLCs in this muscle at day 12 was similar to that present in the other muscles studied. The third development phase of MLC expression began at approximately 12 d of incubation in ovo and encompassed the transition in MLC composition to the isoform patterns incubation in ovo and encompassed the transition in MLC composition to the isoform patterns typical of adult muscle. During this period, the relative proportion of slow MLC rose in both the MA and ALD and fell in the PM. By day 16, the third fast light chain, LC(3f), was apparent in extracts of both the PM and MA. These results show that there is a developmental progression in the expression of MLC in the two avian muscles studied from day 5 in ovo; first, only fast MLCs are accumulated, then both fast and slow MLC isoforms are expressed. Only during the latter third of development in ovo is the final MLC isoform pattern characteristic of a particular muscle type expressed.     

The informational concept of searching for periodicity in symbol sequences

Method of informational decomposition has been developed, allowing one to reveal hidden periodicity in any symbol sequences. The informational decomposition is calculated without conversion of a symbol sequence into the numerical one, which facilitates finding periodicities in a symbol sequence. The method permits introducing an analog of the autocorrelation function of a symbol sequence. The method developed by us has been applied to reveal hidden periodicities in nucleotide and amino acid sequences, as well as in different poetical texts. Hidden periodicity has been detected in various genes, testifying to their quantum structure. The functional and structural role of hidden periodicity is discussed.     

Isolation and characteristics of IKO-GM-1 monoclonal antibodies

The hybridoma clone IKO-GM-1 was obtained as a result of fusion of P3X63Ag8.653 cells with splenocytes of BALB/c mice with the aid of 50% polyethyleneglycol. Antigen demonstrated by antibodies IKO-GM-1 expressed on 100% polymorphonuclear neutrophils, 54.4 +/- 3.1% monocytes, 25.9 +/- 2.4% mononuclears of healthy subjects' blood, on 11.1 +/- 1.0% T lymphocytes, on 14.6 +/- 1.6% T lymphocytes bearing Fc-receptor for IgG, on 49.3 +/- 8.2% enriched population of B lymphocytes and O cells. The treatment of healthy donors' mononuclears with antibodies IKO-GM-1 and complement blocked EK cellular activity against Molt-2 cells but not against K-562 cells. Antigen demonstrated by MAT IKO-GM-1 did not express on the colony-forming granulocyte or macrophagal cells. Antigen expressed on blast cells of patients with AMonoL, on those in part of patients with AML and AMML, on leukocytes of patients with chronic ML, on monocytes of a patient with chronic MonoL. Antigen was absent from blast cells of patients with ALL, LSA, on lymphocytes of patients with ChLL.     

Monoamine oxidase activity and effect of clorgyline on the polyamine level during hyperoxia in rats

During hyperoxia monoamine oxidase type A acquires the ability to deaminate polyamines and histamine. A preliminary injection of clorgyline (a monoamine oxidase type A inhibitor) before hyperoxic exposure leads to a significant removal of oxygen seizures and prevents changes in the cerebral spermidine and histamine content observed in the unprotected animals. The data confirm the important role of modification of catalytic properties in monoamine oxidase in the mechanism of oxygen intoxication.
