Electrical potential oscillations were obtained across a liquid membrane composed of nitrobenzene/picric acid placed between two aqueous phases in the presence of various taste (i.e. salty, sweet and bitter) substances. The influence of these compounds on electrical oscillations was studied using Fourier analysis to establish a "fingerprint" of the substance that can be correlated with its taste index. Various concentrations of each substance were tested to obtain a Fourier spectrum with discrete peaks which can be further processed. The electrical oscillations consisted of a number of weak damped oscillators, and the Fourier spectra of these signals were found to have a number of discrete peaks of decreasing amplitude at low frequencies (0-0.5 Hz). A correlation of the frequency of the first peak of the Fourier spectrum with the taste index was found for bitter substances, whereas for salty substances the amplitude of the first two peaks of the spectrum was correlated with the taste index. 相似文献

Motivation: Recent studies indicate that fractal dimensionscan uncover aspects of cellular dynamics prior to pathological
manifestation. In this respect we are interested in buildinga computational model of oncogenesis able to generate patternswith the same fractal dimension spectrum as the in vivo tumor. Results: A new theoretical model incorporating a systemic viewof oncogenesis in a computational model was proposed. Thetumor growth is viewed as competition for resources betweenthe two self-organizing subsystems: the neoplastic and theimmune. Numerical simulations revealed that tumor escape canbe uncovered in some earlier stage of the immune-systemtumorinteraction using multifractal measures. The described computationalmodel is able to simulate also the case of immune, surgical,chemical and radiotherapeutical treatment, as well as theireffects. The permeability of procaine across axon membranes and the effect of formaldehyde (FA), crotonic aldehyde (CA) and glutaraldehyde (GA) on the compound action potential of frog sciatic nerve was studied by utilizing a non-archimedean (NA) model of the relaxation process. Such models allow a characterization of biosystems exhibiting more than one time scale. Expansions using Laguerre polynomials have been obtained for relaxation functions. The new approach is tested by fitting the model to the experimental data of other authors, and then applying to extract molecular level information from macroscopic data. 相似文献

The nuclear magnetic resonance manganese doping technique is currently used for the determination of the water diffusional exchange time through human erythrocyte membranes. An apparent thermal transition at 26 degrees C was noticed at 18-30 mM manganese doping in the suspending solution. An analysis in terms of a two-phase nuclear spin exchanging system revealed that apparent thermal transitions are expected to occur in the upper and lower temperature regions. They represent a shift from intermediate exchange rates where water diffusion through the membrane is dominant to either fast or slow exchange rates where proton relaxation is the controlling process. The lower temperature apparent transition may be altered by the intracellular manganese concentration; the lower the Mn2+ concentration the lower the transition. Also according to this interpretation only a fraction of the erythrocytes are significantly permeated by Mn2+. The upper transition depends on the Mn2+ concentration in the extracellular volume; it decreases with decreasing Mn2+ concentration. 相似文献

A simple, rapid and sensitive method for procaine determination is described. Isotope dilution mass spectrometry with (15N)procaine as internal standard was used. The analysis was performed at 4000 resolution by selected ion monitoring with temperature programming. The sample was measured in underivatized form in the direct inlet system. The method shows good analytical parameters: linearity between 0 and 40 micrograms ml-1, good precision and accuracy. The method was applied to the in vitro pharmacokinetic study of the metabolism of procaine in liver homogenates of Wistar rats. The method is rapid, permitting about six samples to be run per hour. Sensitivity of the method permits analysis at a signal-to-noise ratio of 5:1. 相似文献

The specific activities of acid (pH 5.5) and neutral (pH 7) DNases and RNases were determined in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) seedlings grown in the dark in the presence of 3.7 mM paraquat (PQ) or 1 mM roundup (RD). Seedlings were taken at 0, 1, 3, and 5 days. Plant growth parameters (plant height and fresh weight) were dramatically reduced under these conditions of growth comparing to the control (grown in water). The DNase and RNase specific activities of herbicide-treated seedlings were reduced. The reduction of activities ranged by about 50–90 and 15–70% in PQ- and RD-treated seedlings, respectively. In vitro, PQ- and RD-treated nucleic acids [single-stranded DNA (ssDNA), RNA, and plasmid DNA (pl-DNA)] were incubated with acid and neutral nucleases. Both enzymes were isolated and purified from alfalfa seedlings. Electrophoretic analysis on agarose gel of the above incubated mixtures revealed the following: (a) neutral nuclease (pH 7) was capable of hydrolyzing PQ-treated ssDNA while acid nuclease (pH 5.5) was incapable. This could be due to the fact that acid and neutral nucleases displayed different base linkage specificity toward ssDNA; (b) RD formed strong complexes with ssDNA that were unable to be hydrolyzed by both nucleases; (c) in contrast, both enzymes were capable of hydrolyzing PQ- or RD-treated RNA; (d) neutral nuclease was capable of nicking and linearizing both PQ- and RD-treated pl-DNA while acid nuclease had the same activity only toward the PQ-treated pl-DNA; (e) the enzyme activities were not inhibited in the presence of both herbicides. The data suggest that the complexes of PQ or RD with DNA should not be functional substrates of nucleases, and consequently cell processes (e.g., metabolism of nucleic acids, gene expression, replication), in which DNA and nucleases are involved, could be disturbed. 相似文献

The effect of procaine hydrochloride and its metabolites on the diffusional water exchange through erythrocyte membranes was investigated at 37 degrees C and at concentrations ranging between 5 X 10(-5) M and 5 X 10(-1) M by using the NMR manganese doping method. Procaine hydrochloride and 2-diethylaminoethanol have a moderate stimulating effect on the water exchange, of up to 20% at concentrations ranging between 10(-3) and 10(-2) M, while an increasing inhibitory effect was found at higher concentrations. The p-aminobenzoic acid has no effect on the water exchange up to 10(-2) M and, at higher concentrations, and apparent decreasing inhibition was noticed which is thought to be an artefact due to the uptake of Mn2+ by the cells. The temperature dependence studies suggest that procaine HCl enhances the uptake of Mn2+ by the cells. An opposite effect was found for rigid erythrocytes. The p-aminobenzoic acid and 2-diethylaminoethanol appeared to be more effective than procaine hydrochloride in increasing the uptake of Mn2+. 相似文献

Background
Theoretical studies suggest that direct and indirect selection have the potential to cause substantial evolutionary change in female mate choice. Similarly, sexual selection is considered a strong force in the evolution of male attractiveness and the exaggeration of secondary sexual traits. Few studies have, however, directly tested how female mate choice and male attractiveness respond to selection. Here we report the results of a selection experiment in which we selected directly on female mating preference for attractive males and, independently, on male attractiveness in the guppy, Poecilia reticulata. We measured the direct and correlated responses of female mate choice and male attractiveness to selection and the correlated responses of male ornamental traits, female fecundity and adult male and female survival.Results
Surprisingly, neither female mate choice nor male attractiveness responded significantly to direct or to indirect selection. Fecundity did differ significantly among lines in a way that suggests a possible sexually-antagonistic cost to male attractiveness.Conclusions
The opportunity for evolutionary change in female mate choice and male attractiveness may be much smaller than predicted by current theory, and may thus have important consequences for how we understand the evolution of female mate choice and male attractiveness. We discuss a number of factors that may have constrained the response of female choice and male attractiveness to selection, including low heritabilities, low levels of genetic (co)variation in the multivariate direction of selection, sexually-antagonistic constraint on sexual selection and the "environmental covariance hypothesis".10.
