Several mass strandings of beaked whales have recently been correlated with military exercises involving mid-frequency sonar highlighting unknowns regarding hearing sensitivity in these species. We report the hearing abilities of a stranded juvenile beaked whale (Mesoplodon europaeus) measured with auditory evoked potentials. The beaked whale’s modulation rate transfer function (MRTF) measured with a 40-kHz carrier showed responses up to an 1,800 Hz amplitude modulation (AM) rate. The MRTF was strongest at the 1,000 and 1,200 Hz AM rates. The envelope following response (EFR) input–output functions were non-linear. The beaked whale was most sensitive to high frequency signals between 40 and 80 kHz, but produced smaller evoked potentials to 5 kHz, the lowest frequency tested. The beaked whale hearing range and sensitivity are similar to other odontocetes that have been measured.  相似文献

In order to determine excitation patterns to the lateral line system from a nearby 50 Hz oscillating sphere, dipole flow field equations were used to model the spatial distribution of pressures along a linear array of lateral line canal pores. Modeled predictions were then compared to pressure distributions measured for the same dipole source with a miniature hydrophone placed in a small test tank used for neurophysiological experiments. Finally, neural responses from posterior lateral line nerve fibers in the goldfish were measured in the test tank to demonstrate that modeled and measured pressure gradient patterns were encoded by the lateral line periphery. Response patterns to a 50 Hz dipole source that slowly changed location along the length of the fish included (1) peaks and valleys in spike-rate responses corresponding to changes in pressure gradient amplitudes, (2) 180° phase-shifts corresponding to reversals in the direction of the pressure gradient and (3) distance-dependent changes in the locations of peaks, valleys and 180° phase-shifts. Modeled pressure gradient patterns also predict that the number of neural amplitude peaks and phase transitions will vary as a function of neuromast orientation and axis of source oscillation. The faithful way in which the lateral line periphery encodes pressure gradient patterns has implications for how source location and distance might be encoded by excitation patterns in the CNS. Phase-shift information may be important for (1) inhibitory/excitatory sculpting of receptive fields and (2) unambiguously encoding source distance so that increases in source distance are not confused with decreases in source amplitude.  相似文献

The potential for extracellular electron shuttles to stimulate RDX biodegradation was investigated with RDX-contaminated aquifer material. Electron shuttling compounds including anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) and soluble humic substances stimulated RDX mineralization in aquifer sediment. RDX mass-loss was similar in electron shuttle amended and donor-alone treatments; however, the concentrations of nitroso metabolites, in particular TNX, and ring cleavage products (e.g., HCHO, MEDINA, NDAB, and NH4 +) were different in shuttle-amended incubations. Nitroso metabolites accumulated in the absence of electron shuttles (i.e., acetate alone). Most notably, 40–50% of [14C]-RDX was mineralized to 14CO2 in shuttle-amended incubations. Mineralization in acetate amended or unamended incubations was less than 12% within the same time frame. The primary differences in the presence of electron shuttles were the increased production of NDAB and formaldehyde. NDAB did not further degrade, but formaldehyde was not present at final time points, suggesting that it was the mineralization precursor for Fe(III)-reducing microorganisms. RDX was reduced concurrently with Fe(III) reduction rather than nitrate or sulfate reduction. Amplified 16S rDNA restriction analysis (ARDRA) indicated that unique Fe(III)-reducing microbial communities (β- and γ-proteobacteria) predominated in shuttle-amended incubations. These results demonstrate that indigenous Fe(III)-reducing microorganisms in RDX-contaminated environments utilize extracellular electron shuttles to enhance RDX mineralization. Electron shuttle-mediated RDX mineralization may become an effective in situ option for contaminated environments.  相似文献

An algorithm was developed and tested for differentiating between the spatial distribution of large arrays of surface electromyographic (LASE) data from subjects with and without low back pain (LBP). The surface EMG data from 62 channels were collected from the low back of 161 healthy and 44 acute (less than 6-weeks) LBP subjects in three minimum stress postural positions including standing, 20 degrees of trunk flexion (at hip joint) and standing with arms extended forward holding a 1.36kg (3lb) weight in each hand. These data were statistically analyzed and the spatial distribution of the root mean square (RMS) values was used in a multivariate quadratic discriminant model to reclassify the healthy and acute LBP subjects. The most predictive results were obtained from the 'flexion' group of experiments and correctly reclassified 95.5% (42/44) of the acute LBP subjects and 99.4% (160/161) of the healthy subjects. The success rate of this reclassification based on surface distribution of myoelectric potentials was found to be better than the reported patient classifications based on a smaller set of electrode pairs using fewer subjects [Peach JP, McGill SM, Classification of low back pain with use of spectral electromyogram parameters. Although stimulation of dissimilatory metal reduction to promote the reductive precipitation of uranium has been shown to successfully remove uranium from some aquifer sediments, the organisms in the family Geobacteraceae that have been found to be associated with metal reduction in previous studies are not known to grow at the high salinities found in some uranium-contaminated groundwaters. Studies with a highly saline uranium-contaminated aquifer sediment demonstrated that the addition of acetate could stimulate the removal of U(VI) from the groundwater. This removal was associated with an enrichment in microorganisms most closely related to Pseudomonas and Desulfosporosinus species.  相似文献

Microbiological reduction of soluble U(VI) to insoluble U(IV) has been proposed as a remediation strategy for uranium-contaminated groundwater. Nitrate is a common co-contaminant with uranium. Nitrate inhibited U(VI) reduction in acetate-amended aquifer sediments collected from a uranium-contaminated site in New Mexico. Once nitrate was depleted, both U(VI) and Fe(III) were reduced concurrently. When nitrate was added to sediments in which U(VI) had been reduced, U(VI) reappeared in solution. Parallel studies with the dissimilatory Fe(III)-, U(VI)- and nitrate-reducing microorganism, Geobacter metallireducens, demonstrated that nitrate inhibited reduction of Fe(III) and U(VI) in cell suspensions of cells that had been grown with nitrate as the electron acceptor, but not in Fe(III)-grown cells. Suspensions of nitrate-grown G. metallireducens oxidized Fe(II) and U(IV) with nitrate as the electron acceptor. U(IV) oxidation was accelerated when Fe(II) was also added, presumably due to the Fe(III) being formed abiotically oxidizing U(IV). These studies demonstrate that although the presence of nitrate is not likely to be an impediment to the bioremediation of uranium contamination with microbial U(VI) reduction, it is necessary to reduce nitrate before U(VI) can be reduced. These results also suggest that anaerobic oxidation of U(IV) to U(VI) with nitrate serving as the electron acceptor may provide a novel strategy for solubilizing and extracting microbial U(IV) precipitates from the subsurface.  相似文献

Little research has been conducted on the somatosensory system of toothed whales and it remains uncertain how tactile sensitivity varies about their bodies. In this study, tactile sensitivity to high-frequency (250-Hz) displacement of the skin was quantified in three trained adult common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) using a vibratory device (tactor). The magnitude of skin displacement was controlled by varying the voltage to the tactor held against the skin surface with a constant force. Tactile thresholds were determined using an adaptive method of limits in which dolphins reported perception of the tactile stimulus by producing a whistle. Displacement thresholds ranged from 2.4 to 40 μm, with the greatest sensitivity found along the rostrum, melon, and blowhole. Sensitivity decreased caudally along the body, with the dorsal fin and tip of the fluke being the least sensitive locations tested. The results support hypotheses that the follicles on the dolphin rostrum are particularly important for perception. The reduction in tactile sensitivity at the appendages is consistent with their primary role in stabilization and locomotion compared to exploration or environmental sensing.  相似文献

To enhance biohydrogen production, Clostridium beijerinckii was co‐cultured with Geobacter metallireducens in the presence of the reduced extracellular electron shuttle anthrahydroquinone‐2, 6‐disulfonate (AH2QDS). In the co‐culture system, increases of up to 52.3% for maximum cumulative hydrogen production, 38.4% for specific hydrogen production rate, 15.4% for substrate utilization rate, 39.0% for substrate utilization extent, and 34.8% for hydrogen molar yield in co‐culture fermentation were observed compared to a pure culture of C. beijerinckii without AH2QDS. G. metallireducens grew in the co‐culture system, resulting in a decrease in acetate concentration under co‐culture conditions and a presumed regeneration of AH2QDS from AQDS. These co‐culture results demonstrate metabolic crosstalk between the fermentative bacterium C. beijerinckii and the respiratory bacterium G. metallireducens and suggest a strategy for industrial biohydrogen production. A fermentative, non-spore forming, motile, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain MJ1T, was isolated from an RDX contaminated aquifer at a live-fire training site in Northwest NJ, United States. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequencing and DNA base composition, strain MJ1T was assigned to the Firmicutes. The DNA G+C content was 42.8 mol%. Fermentative growth was supported by glucose and citrate in a defined basal medium. The bacterium is a strict anaerobe that grows between at pH 6.0 and pH 8.0 and 18 and 37 °C. The culture did not grow with hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) as the electron acceptor or mineralize RDX under these conditions. However, MJ1T transformed RDX into MNX, methylenedinitramine, formaldehyde, formate, ammonium, nitrous oxide, and nitrate. The nearest phylogenetic relative with a validly published name was Desulfotomaculum guttoideum (95 % similarity). However, MJ1T was also related to Clostridium celerecrescens DSM 5628 (95 %), Clostridium indolis DSM 755 (94 %), and Clostridium sphenoides DSM 632 (94 %). DNA:DNA hybridization with these strains was between 6.7 and 58.7 percent. The dominant cellular fatty acids (greater than 5 % of the total, which was 99.0 % recovery) were 16:0 fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) (32.12 %), 18:1cis 11 dimethyl acetal (DMA) (16.47 %), 16:1cis 9 DMA (10.28 %), 16:1cis 9 FAME (8.10 %), and 18:1cis 9 DMA (5.36 %). On the basis of morphological, physiological, and phylogenetic data, Clostridium geopurificans is proposed as a new species in genus Clostridium, with strain MJ1T as the type strain.  相似文献

Few mammals-cetaceans, domestic cats and select bats and rodents-can send and receive vocal signals contained within the ultrasonic domain, or pure ultrasound (greater than 20 kHz). Here, we use the auditory brainstem response (ABR) method to demonstrate that a species of nocturnal primate, the Philippine tarsier (Tarsius syrichta), has a high-frequency limit of auditory sensitivity of ca 91 kHz. We also recorded a vocalization with a dominant frequency of 70 kHz. Such values are among the highest recorded for any terrestrial mammal, and a relatively extreme example of ultrasonic communication. For Philippine tarsiers, ultrasonic vocalizations might represent a private channel of communication that subverts detection by predators, prey and competitors, enhances energetic efficiency, or improves detection against low-frequency background noise.  相似文献
