Seedlings of 14 species were grown for 14–28 days on nutrient solution with 6 mmol.l−1 NH4 as the sole nitrogen source. Solutions acidity was were kept constant at pH 4.0, 5.0, 6.0 and 7.0 by continuous titration with diluted KOH. The following species were used: barley, maize, oats sorghum, yellow and white lupin, pea, soybean, carrot, flax, castor-oil, spinach, sugarbeet and sunflower. Most plant species grew optimally at pH 6.0 with slight reductions at pH 5.0. Growth of many species was severely inhibited at pH 4.0, but this inhibition was not observed with the legume and cereal species. Yield depressions at pH 4.0 relative to pH 6.0 were well correlated with the respective relative decreases of the K concentration in their roots (P<0.002). In the roots of two species (sunflower and flax) total N concentrations were also strongly reduced at pH 4.0. apparently, the interactions between uptake of K, NH4 and H ions become the prevalent problem at suboptimal pH. At pH 7.0, yields were also considerably decreased, with the exception of the lupines. At this pH, the roots of the growth inhibited plants were characterized by increased levels of total N and free NH4. It is thought that the binding capacity of the roots for NH4 is an important factor in preventing NH4/NH3 toxicity at supraoptimal pH.  相似文献

An experiment to study the effects of Mg nutrition on root and shoot development of the Al-sensitive sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) genotype CV323 grown in pots of sandy loam under different acid soil stress is reported. This experiment had a factorial design: four rates of liming were combined with four rates of Mg fertilization. When no Mg was added, the pH of the soil solutions (collected in ceramic cups) increased from 4.0 (unlimed) to 4.2, 4.7 and 5.9 at the increasing rates of liming. After 30 days of growth dry matter yields of the limed treatments were 40%, 115% and 199% higher than that of the unlimed treatment. Without liming and at the highest liming rate, adding Mg did not affect plant biomass significantly. At the two intermediate levels of liming, however, 11.3 mg extra Mg per kg soil increased dry matter yield to the same levels as found at the highest liming rate. Concentrations of Mg in the soil solution rose after Mg was added and fell when lime was added, but adding both Mg and lime increased Mg concentrations in the plant shoots. In plants of the limed treatments, dry matter yield was correlated closely with the Mg concentration in the shoot. This was not so in the unlimed treatment. Furthermore, in the unlimed treatments root development was inhibited, but reduced Mg uptake by the plants resulted mainly from the direct effect of Al- (or H-) ions in the soil solution rather than from impaired root development. It is concluded that Mg fertilization counteracted the interfering effects of Al- and H ions on Mg uptake.  相似文献

In a pot trial growth and transpiration of 3-year-old Douglas-fir seedlings on an acid, sandy soil was examined at a deficient (30 kg N ha –  1 year –  1) and an excessive level (120 kg N ha –  1 year –  1) of NH4 application. Dissolved ammonium sulphate was applied to the pots weekly for two growing seasons. In half of the pots a complete set of other nutrients was applied in optimal proportions to the applied nitrogen. Water supply was optimal and transpiration was recorded. At the end of the second treatment season irrigation was stopped for 2 weeks during dry and sunny weather. Both high application of NH4 and additional nutrients increased shoot growth and transpiration demand in the first treatment year. The root system was smaller at higher N level and this reduced water uptake accordingly. In the second year the combination of high NH4 + and additional nutrients affected root functioning predominantly due to salinity effects and this seriously decreased water uptake capacity and shoot water potentials, finally resulting in tree death. Without addition of other nutrients the high NH4 + application resulted in a high degree of soil acidification, which damaged the roots, that showed a decrease in water uptake capacity. At the low NH4 supply level soil acidification was lower, and root functioning was not affected, and the trees recovered quickly from the imposed drought. Higher needle K and P status depressed transpiration rates at the low NH4 application rate. Received: 9 January 1995 / Accepted: 18 September 1995  相似文献

The effect of adding phytase to the root medium of maize plants on the P-availability of added myo-inositol hexaphosphate (phytin) has been studied in pot experiments. When 40 mM phytin-P in nutrient solution was incubated in quartz-sand for 15 days in the absence of plants, 80% of it could be recovered from the solution as soluble organic P. Maize plants growing on this mixture assimilated P from phytin at rates comparable to those from inorganic phosphate (Pi). At a lower addition rate (2 mM phytin-P) only 10% was recovered in the soil solution, and plant growth was severely limited by P. At this low phytin level, the addition of phytase (10 enzyme units per kg sand) increased the plants' dry weight yield by 32%. The relative increases of the Pi concentration in the solution and of the amount of P in the plants were even higher, indicating that the observed growth stimulation was due to an increased rate of phytin hydrolysis. The enzyme-induced growth stimulation was also observed with plants growing in pots filled with soil low in P, when phytin was added. However, on three different soils the addition rates of phytin and phytase necessary for obtaining a significant phytase effect were both about 10 times higher than those required in quartzsand. It is concluded that the P-availability from organic sources can be limited by the rate of their hydrolytic cleavage.Abbreviation Pi inorganic phosphate  相似文献

Summary A flow method for the measurement of the uptake of labelled substances by plant cells has been developed. Accumulation in the medium of substances released by the plants is thereby avoided, and a more precise determination of the rate of uptake—also of transients—than through the usual, static methods is possible. The time function of the stimulation of the uptake of Rb by Chlorella fusca by light at 30° has been analyzed, and the component believed to represent active transport separated from other components that have shorter time constants; at 3° the active component is much reduced. In the cases of the heavy metal ions Zn, Co, Pb and Ce, even after presaturation with the ions in the dark for the suppression of the short-term uptake the light-independent long-term uptake is far stronger than with Rb. Moreover, for Zn and Co the uptake is greatly stimulated by light at 30°, but little if at all at 5°. No stimulation was found under any conditions with Ce. With Pb, the light effect was hardly reproducible, and in any case extremely small. The energy-dependent transport of Zn and Co is probably active.

The contribution of Mg deficiency to Al stress in twelve different sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) genotypes was investigated in nutrient solution culture under conditions of low Mg supply (between 50 and 1000 M) at two pH values. At pH 4.2, 30 M Al strongly inhibited Mg uptake. When dry matter yield was plotted as a function of the plant Mg concentration, similar response curves were obtained in the absence and the presence of Al with three genotypes. With many other genotypes dry matter yields of the control (without Al treatment) and Al-stressed plants were remarkably different at similar internal Mg concentrations, suggesting that growth had been suppressed not by Mg deficiency but by another factor, i.e. Al-induced root damage. At pH 4.8, 30 M Al hardly induced root damage but reduced Mg uptake and Al-induced Mg deficiency could almost completely account for the growth reaction of all genotypes. Therefore, at this pH the efficiency of uptake or use of Mg in different genotypes was the basis of their respective susceptibility to Al toxicity. When specific root length surpassed a certain critical range below 80–100 m per g dry root, growth control by Al-induced Mg deficiency was nearly abolished. The pH and Al concentration where this range was reached depended on the Al sensitivity of the genotypes.  相似文献

Excretion and absorption of glycolate by young cells of Scenedesmus obliquus (Turp.) Krüger strain D3 grown synchronously with 2% CO2 was compared after no pretreatment with air (CO2-adapted) or after a 2 h adaptation to normal air (0.03% CO2) (air-adapted). At 21% O2, excretion occurred only from CO2-adapted cells at high pH (pH 8.0). Under conditions where no excretion occurred, external glycolate (0.2 mM) was taken up by both air-and CO2-adapted cells at a much faster rate at pH 5 than at pH 8. The uptake was accompanied by an apparent stoichiometric uptake of H+. CO2-adapted algae exhibited high uptake rates that were even higher in the dark than in the light. Air-adapted algae showed high uptake rates in the light but only minimal uptake in the dark. The uptake rate was decreased to about 1/3 with 5% CO2, except with CO2-adapted cells in the light, in which a slight stimulation occurred. Cl- ions inhibited glycolate uptake by air-adapted cells in the light; conversely, light-stimulated Cl- uptake of these cells was inhibited by glycolate. A hypothesis is discussed according to which the internal pH regulates the uptake and release of Cl-, HCO 3 - , and glycolate.Abbreviations DCMU 3-(3,4 dichlorophenyl)-1, 1-dimethyl urea - FCCP carbonyl cyanide p-trifluoro-methoxyphenylhydrazone - HEPES 2-(4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-piperazinyl) ethanesulfonic acid - HPMS -hydroxypyridinemethanesulfonate - MES 2-morpholinoethanesulfonic acid - PCV packed cell volume  相似文献

The effects of liming and Mg fertilization on growth, specific root length (root length per unit of root dry weight; SRL) and nutrient uptake of twelve sorghum genotypes (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) were studied in two pot experiments. Liming increased the pH of the sandy loam from pH 4.3 (unlimed) to 4.7 (with 0.5 g Ca(OH)2 kg-1 soil) and to 6.1 (with 2.5 g Ca(OH)2 kg-1 soil). Liming increased the dry matter yield of the genotypes by factors of 1.2 to 6.0 (between pH 4.3 and 4.7) and by 1.1 to 2.4 (between pH 4.7 and 6.1). In absence of Mg at soil pH of 4.3 and 4.7, all genotypes suffered from Mg deficiency, as indicated by low Mg concentrations in the shoots (26–94 mmol Mg kg-1 DM) and visible Mg deficiency symptoms. At pH 4.7 several of the genotypes responded to Mg application and produced significantly more dry matter. At pH 4.3, however, none of the genotypes responded to Mg, even though the internal Mg concentrations were increased by applied Mg. The relative increase in dry matter yield between pH 4.3 and 4.7 was closely correlated to the relative change in specific root length in the same soil pH interval, especially when the soil was fertilized with Mg (r2=0.91**). The group of genotypes where SRL and dry matter yield were reduced by soil acidity was not the same as the group that responded positively to Mg application at pH 4.7.It is concluded that the growth of sorghum genotypes on acid soils is determined by two independent characteristics: the sensitivity of root development to soil acidity and the efficiency of the uptake and utilization of Mg. The first characteristic is predminant at high soil acidity whilst the latter is dominant at moderate soil acidity.  相似文献

The adsorption of phosphate on metal (hydr)oxides may be influenced by the pH and by the adsorption of other ions. In this study, the influence of sulphate and pH on phosphate adsorption on goethite and the availability to plants of adsorbed phosphate was examined. Maize plants were grown on suspensions of goethite with adsorbed phosphate, containing the same total amount of phosphate and either 0.11 mM or 2.01 mM sulphate at pH 3.7, 4.6 or 5.5. The uptake of phosphorus by the plants increased with the larger sulphate concentration and decreasing pH. Mean P uptake in the treatment with 2.01 mM sulphate and pH 3.7 was 55 µmol plant-1, whereas in the treatment with 0.11 mM sulphate and pH 5.5 it was 2 µmol plant-1. Batch adsorption experiments using32 P and speciation modelling of ion adsorption showed that in the presence of sulphate, the phosphate concentration in solution strongly increased with decreasing pH, due to competitive adsorption between sulphate and phosphate on goethite. Modelled phosphate concentrations in solution in the uptake experiment were all below 0.6 µM and correlated well with the observed P uptake. This correlation indicates that the strong influence of the sulphate concentration and pH on the plant-availability of adsorbed phosphate results from the competition between sulphate and phosphate for adsorption on goethite.  相似文献

A mathematical model of P solubilization by organic anion excretion from roots is described and used to account for P solubilization by rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants growing in aerobic soil. In previous experiments with rice in an aerobic, highly-weathered, P-deficient soil, we found that the plants were able to solubilize P from an alkali-soluble pool and thereby increase their P uptake. The solubilization could not be explained by pH changes nor by the release of phosphatases. In subsequent experiments we found excretion of citrate from rice roots into nutrient solutions, and the synthesis and excretion of citrate tended to increase under P starvation. The model allows for the diffusion of the organic anion away from a root, its decomposition by soil microbes, its reaction with the soil in solubilizing P, and diffusion of the solubilized P back towards the root as well as away from it. We calculated the rate of citrate excretion from rice roots growing in soil based on measured steady-state citrate concentrations in the rhizosphere and calculated rates of decomposition. Calculations using these and other model parameters obtained independently showed that the observed solubilization and increased P uptake by rice growing in soil could be accounted for. A sensitivity analysis of the model is given. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
