ENCARSIA BERLESEI: (Howard) and Pteroptrix orientalis (Silvestri) are endoparasitoids of Pseudaulacaspis pentagona (Targioni Tozzetti), that are sympatric in Campania (Italy). The influence of host stages on several components of E. berlesei fitness and the effect of mating status on the production of Pteroptrix orientalis progeny were evaluated at 25 degrees C. Parasitization of earlier host stages resulted in an increase in the development time and a decrease in progeny number of E. berlesei. Adult parasitoids were largest when young female stages were parasitized. Pupal mortality did not differ among host stages. Mated female P. orientalis produced a greater number of progeny and proportionally fewer sons (13.6% of the total progeny) than did virgin females (21.7%). The reproductive potential of both parasitoids was also evaluated at four regimes of constant temperature (20, 24, 26 and 30 degrees C). Encarsia berlesei attained rm values nearly double those of P. orientalis at 20, 24 and 26 degrees C, whilst at 30 degrees C the two parasitoids achieved the same rm value, since at this temperature E. berlesei suffered a high pupal mortality. Sex ratio of P. orientalis, expressed as proportion of males, varied significantly between 20 and 24 degrees C only.  相似文献

Neem oil is a natural product obtained from the seeds of the tree Azadirachta indica. In this report, we investigate the alterations of the biophysical properties of the plasma membrane caused by treatment with the nonterpenoid fraction of neem oil that we defined as methanolic extract (MEX). The dose-response effect was evaluated and a MEX-dependent cytoxicity evidenced. The effect of MEX on the plasma membrane was studied by a well-established dielectric spectroscopy technique: electrorotation, which allows single-cell analysis. Our results show a structural/functional alteration of the plasma membrane with an evident increase of specific capacitance and conductance. The biological implications of this effect are discussed.  相似文献

This article analyses the relevant studies that have made sandhoppers a model subject for the study of orientation, and traces the development of the paradigm through innovative hypotheses and empirical evidence. Sandhoppers are able to maintain their direction without sensorial contact with the goal, which is their burrowing zone extended along the beach, but very narrow across it. They actively determine the direction of their movements, according to their internal state and the environmental features encountered. Each population shows an 'innate directional tendency' adapted to the shoreline of origin, and the inexpert laboratory-born young behave in a similar way to the adults. Genetic differences have been demonstrated between, as well as within natural populations. The question of the calibration of the sun compass to orientation on a particular shoreline implies a redundancy of mechanisms of orientation. Orientation mechanisms may involve environmental cues perceived through diverse sensory modalities, and range from simple orientation reflexes to sun compass navigational systems. These include scototaxis and geotaxis, and the response to the silhouette of the dune, in addition to sun and moon orientation, which is dependent on the time of the day and orientates daily migrations on the beach. Different modalities of orientation may operate singly, or in conjunction with each other, and their ecological significance may vary according to the habitat and lifestyle of the animals. Taken collectively, the orientation behaviour of the group appears to be a most accommodating phenotype, with considerable adaptive potential. The evidence from comparative studies of different populations promotes consideration of behavioural plasticity as an adaptation to changing coastlines.  相似文献

Thymic leukemia (TL) is a MHC class Ib molecule that interacts with CD8alphaalpha homodimers. CD8alphaalpha is abundantly expressed by intraepithelial T lymphocytes (IELs) located in close proximity to TL-expressing intestinal epithelial cells. In this study, we show that CD8alphaalpha(+) IELs "snatch" TL from the plasma membrane of TL-expressing cells and express TL in its proper orientation on their own cell surface. TL snatching is enhanced by cross-linking of IEL TCRs in a phosphatidylinositol kinase-dependent manner, and results in overall alterations to the IEL cell surface detected by enhanced binding of peanut agglutinin lectin. Induction of bowel inflammation results in the presence of TL on IELs, probably via in vivo snatching, providing the initial evidence for the interaction of CD8alphaalpha IELs with intestinal cells.  相似文献

In the Maremma Natural Park (Grosseto, Italy), the Collelungo beach exhibits a clear morphodynamics gradient, resulting in a severe erosion to a gradual accretion along the shoreline. Here, three sub-populations of the sandhopper Talitrus saltator (Montagu) (Crustacea, Amphipoda) were studied to highlight eventual intra- and inter-population variation of the endogenous locomotor rhythm. Individual activity recordings were carried out for 21 days in constant darkness and controlled temperature and humidity conditions. The variation of the free-running period was analysed at individual and sub-population levels, and the dependence on intrinsic (individual features) and extrinsic (habitat of origin and season) factors was analysed. A seasonal variation was highlighted, related to the seasonal spontaneous activity of the species. In summer and autumn, a significant correlation between the behavioural variation in the sub-populations (period and definition of the period) and beach physical parameters (slope and width) defined the dependence of the behavioural gradient on the environmental gradient. The observed relationship may represent an adaptation to the local coastline dynamics, suggesting the importance of a plastic behaviour as adaptive response to a variable environment.  相似文献

Summary Littoral sandhoppers perform zonal orientation mainly by means of sun orientation, which in Mediterranean populations was shown to be inborn, associated with a genetically determined directional tendency adapted to the shoreline of each population. In case of changes of the shoreline the genetic heterogeneity of populations and learning ability may cooperate in providing adaptation both at the population and at the individual level. This hypothesis has been tested carrying on studies on the ontogenesis of the reactionnorm of this behavioural trait inTalitrus saltator (Montagu) (Crustacea: Amphipoda) of a Tyrrhenian population which from previous results shows a well adapted seaward orientation. Sun orientation was analysed away from the sea shore, both in laboratory-raised individuals of different ages and in individuals captured in the field, by repeated releases on dry flat sand or in a glass bowl. Results showed variability within and between individuals of directional tendency, which varies in the individual life depending on age and experience. Particularly, age seems to bring canalization as variability within individuals tends to decrease with age. In order to evaluate the role of experience, we trained individuals to direct themselves towards a direction different from that genetically determined. The majority of the individuals showed a learning ability in the training situation. Summary Tilting of the animal with respect to gravity results in compensatory eyestalk movements and in leg counterforce reactions which vary with the number and sequential position of legs touching the body-fixed substrate board (Figs. 2, 3). The gravity response is reduced with increasing number of legs touching the substrate. The results fit an interpretation that the weight of the substrate input interacting with gravity signals results from superposition of the weighted effects of the single legs involved (Figs. 2, 4).Acknowledgements are due to the Max-Planck-Institut (D. The role of ATP and its stable analogue ATPγS [adenosine-5′-o-(3-thio)triphosphate] was studied in rat hippocampal neurotransmission under normoxic conditions and during oxygen and glucose deprivation (OGD). Field excitatory postsynaptic potentials (fEPSPs) from the dendritic layer or population spikes (PSs) from the soma were extracellularly recorded in the CA1 area of the rat hippocampus. Exogenous application of ATP or ATPγS reduced fEPSP and PS amplitudes. In both cases the inhibitory effect was blocked by the selective A1 adenosine receptor antagonist DPCPX (8-cyclopentyl-1,3-dipropylxanthine) and was potentiated by different ecto-ATPase inhibitors: ARL 67156 (6-N,N-diethyl-D-β,γ-dibromomethylene), BGO 136 (1-hydroxynaphthalene-3,6-disulfonate) and PV4 [hexapotassium dihydrogen monotitanoundecatungstocobaltate(II) tridecahydrate, K6H2[TiW11CoO40]·13H2O]. ATPγS-mediated inhibition was reduced by the P2 antagonist suramin [8-(3-benzamido-4-methylbenzamido)naphthalene-1,3,5-trisulfonate] at the somatic level and by other P2 blockers, PPADS (pyridoxalphosphate-6-azophenyl-2′,4′-disulfonate) and MRS 2179 (2′-deoxy-N 6-methyladenosine 3′,5′-bisphosphate), at the dendritic level. After removal of both P2 agonists, a persistent increase in evoked synaptic responses was recorded both at the dendritic and somatic levels. This effect was prevented in the presence of different P2 antagonists. A 7-min OGD induced tissue anoxic depolarization and was invariably followed by irreversible loss of fEPSP. PPADS, suramin, MRS2179 or BBG (brilliant blue G) significantly prevented the irreversible failure of neurotransmission induced by 7-min OGD. Furthermore, in the presence of these P2 antagonists, the development of anoxic depolarization was blocked or significantly delayed. Our results indicate that P2 receptors modulate CA1 synaptic transmission under normoxic conditions by eliciting both inhibitory and excitatory effects. In the same brain region, P2 receptor stimulation plays a deleterious role during a severe OGD insult.  相似文献

The 11th influenza A virus gene product is an 87-amino-acid protein provisionally named PB1-F2 (because it is encoded by an open reading frame overlapping the PB1 open reading frame). A significant fraction of PB1-F2 localizes to the inner mitochondrial membrane in influenza A virus-infected cells. PB1-F2 appears to enhance virus-induced cell death in a cell type-dependent manner. For the present communication we have identified and characterized a region near the COOH terminus of PB1-F2 that is necessary and sufficient for its inner mitochondrial membrane localization, as determined by transient expression of chimeric proteins consisting of elements of PB1-F2 genetically fused to enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) in HeLa cells. Targeting of EGFP to mitochondria by this sequence resulted in the loss of the inner mitochondrial membrane potential, leading to cell death. The mitochondrial targeting sequence (MTS) is predicted to form a positively charged amphipathic alpha-helix and, as such, is similar to the MTS of the p13(II) protein of human T-cell leukemia virus type 1. We formally demonstrate the functional interchangeability of the two sequences for mitochondrial localization of PB1-F2. Mutation analysis of the putative amphipathic helix in the PB1-F2 reveals that replacement of five basic amino acids with Ala abolishes mitochondrial targeting, whereas mutation of two highly conserved Leu to Ala does not. These findings demonstrate that PB1-F2 possesses an MTS similar to other viral proteins and that this MTS, when fused to EGFP, is capable of independently compromising mitochondrial function and cellular viability.  相似文献
