Fourteen elite sorghum lines were evaluated for their resistance to Striga hermonthica at three locations in Nigeria and Mali. Results showed that many of the lines especially MALISOR 84-1, SAMSORG 41, 97-SB-F5DT-64 (Keninkédié) and the check SRN 39 remained resistant to Striga in all locations with low emerged Striga counts, while SAMSORG 14 had the highest Striga infestation in all locations. Considerable variation in reaction to Striga infestation was observed on Séguètana, 97-SB-F5DT-63 (Wasa), 97-SB-F5DT-65, CMDT 38, CMDT 39 and CMDT 45 which were susceptible to Striga at Samaru, Nigeria but were resistant to Striga at both locations in Mali. Based on low Striga resistance and high grain yield, lines MALISOR 84-1, SAMSORG 41, 97-SB-F5DT-64, 97-SB-F5DT-65, CMDT 39 and SAMSORT 14 have been nominated for wider evaluation across more West African countries. 相似文献

Fallen branches, logs, and exposed roots (fallen branches hereafter) commonly form part of the trunk trail system of leaf-cutting ants that inhabit the tropical rain forest. We studied the role of fallen branches on resource discovering and on leaf transport rates in Atta cephalotes . Fallen branches were common components of the A. cephalotes trail system; they were present in all the nests, and in the majority of the trunk trails examined (13/16). A field experiment revealed that, at the beginning of their foraging activity, ants discovered food sources located at the end of fallen branches earlier than those located on the leaf litter. Additionally, laden ants walked faster along a fallen branch than along soil tracks of the trunk trails. This increment in speed was higher in slow-walking ants ( e.g. , with larger loads) than in fast-walking ants ( e.g. , with smaller loads). These results suggest that the presence of fallen branches may direct the searching effort of leaf-cutters and increase the foraging speed of laden ants when these structures are part of the trunk trail system. The advantages of using fallen branches as part of a trail system, and their potential consequences in the spatial foraging pattern of leaf-cutting ants, are discussed. 相似文献

Background
Human serum paraoxonase 1 (PON1) plays a major role in the metabolism of several organophosphorus compounds. The enzyme is encoded by the polymorphic gene PON1, located on chromosome 7q21.3. Aiming to identify genetic variations related to the risk of developing brain tumors, we investigated the putative association between common nonsynonymous PON1 polymorphisms and the risk of developing astrocytoma and meningioma. 相似文献4.

In leaf-cutting ants, the handling of waste materials from the fungus culture increases the risk of infection. Consequently,
ants should manage their waste in a way that minimizes the spread of diseases. We investigated whether in Acromyrmex lobicornis, waste-worker ants (a) also perform roles in foraging or mound maintenance, (b) are morphologically different than other ant workers, and (c) are aggressively discriminated by other worker ants from the same colony. In addition, we investigated whether the location
of external waste piles minimizes the probability that wastes spread to the ant nest. In the field, we (a) marked with different colours waste-workers, foragers and mound-workers and monitored whether these ants interchanged their
tasks; (b) measured head width, head length, hind femur length and total length of waste-workers; foragers and mound-workers; (c) forced field encounters between waste-workers and foragers, and (d) measured the cardinal orientation of the waste piles in relation to the colony mound. Waste-worker ants did not perform other
function outside the nest; neither foragers nor mound-workers managed the waste. Moreover, waste-workers were smaller than
foragers and mound-workers, and were attacked if they tried to enter their nest using foraging entrances. The location of
external refuse dumps also appears to reduce contamination risks. Waste piles always were down-slope, and often followed the
prevailing wind direction. The importance of behaviours such as the division of labour, aggressions against waste-workers
and nest compartmentalization (i.e., the orientation of external waste piles) to minimize the spread of pathogens is discussed. 相似文献

The use of graduated compression stockings (GCS) in sport has been increasing in the last years due to their potential positive effects for athletes. However, there is little evidence to support whether these types of garments actually improve cardiorespiratory performance. The aim of this study was to examine the cardiorespiratory responses of GCS during running after three weeks of regular use. Twenty recreational runners performed three tests on different days: test 1) – a 5-min maximal effort run in order to determine the participants’ maximal aerobic speed; and tests 2) and 3) – a fatigue running test of 30 minutes at 80% of their maximal aerobic speed with either GCS or PLACEBO stockings at random. Cardiorespiratory parameters (minute ventilation, heart rate, relative oxygen consumption, relative carbon dioxide production, ventilatory equivalents for oxygen and carbon dioxide, and oxygen pulse) were measured. Before each test in the laboratory, the participants trained with the randomly assigned stockings (GCS or PLACEBO) for three weeks. No significant differences between GCS and PLACEBO were found in any of the cardiorespiratory parameters. In conclusion, the present study provides evidence that running with GCS for three weeks does not influence cardiorespiratory parameters in recreational runners. 相似文献

Exotic species change the structure and composition of invaded communities in multiple ways, but the sign of their impact
on native species is still controversial. We evaluated the effects of the thistles Carduus thoermeri and Onopordum acanthium—two of the most abundant exotic plant species in disturbed areas of the Patagonian steppe—on the native tending ant assemblage.
Exotic thistles showed an increased number of plants with aphids and had greater aphid density than native plants. Since native
tending ants were present only in plants with aphids, their abundance was higher in infested thistles than in native plants.
Path analyses confirmed that ant activity depended more on aphid density than on thistle traits. Our results suggest that
the presence of exotic thistles in disturbed areas of NW Patagonia indirectly benefit the native ant assemblage through the
maintenance of an increased aphid population. This illustrates how the impact of exotic on native species can depend on the
ecological context. 相似文献

The mounds of ant nests have been characterized as structures that facilitate the colonization of habitats subject to extreme temperatures. My objective was to investigate the importance of the mound of Acromyrmex lobicornis (Formicidae, Attini) in this process. In the most climatically rigorous environment that this ant genus lives (northwestern Patagonia), I determined (1) the temperature range within Acromyrmex lobicornis nest-mounds, (2) the influence of mound damages on the mortality or abandonment rate of Acromyrmex lobicornis nests, and (3) compared, from the existing literature, the distribution limits between the species of Acromyrmex that do and do not construct mounds. The mounds of A. lobicornis function as 'thermal buffers' by diminishing the effects of external thermal variations, and previous mound damage increased mortality or abandonment only of colonies with nest mounds constructed on bare ground. Mounds constructed on tussock plants increased their diameter faster and recovered better from perturbations. This may be due to the structural support of plant stems facilitating repair. At a larger scale, the species of Acromyrmex with mounds have more southerly range limits than species that do not construct mounds, indicating an important function of this nest structure for the colonization of temperate environments. 相似文献

Small-scale disturbances caused by animals often modify soil resource availability and may also affect plant attributes. Changes
in the phenotype of plants growing on disturbed, nutrient-enriched microsites may influence the distribution and abundance
of associated insects. We evaluated how the high nutrient availability generated by leaf-cutting ant nests in a Patagonian
desert steppe may spread along the trophic chain, affecting the phenotype of two thistle species, the abundance of a specialist
aphid and the composition of the associated assemblage of tending ants. Plants of the thistle species Carduus nutans and Onopordum acanthium growing in piles of waste material generated by leaf-cutting ant nests (i.e., refuse dumps) had more leaves, inflorescences
and higher foliar nitrogen content than those in non-nest soils. Overall, plants in refuse dumps showed higher abundance of
aphids than plants in non-nest soils, and aphid colonies were of greater size on O. acanthium plants than on C. nutans plants. However, only C. nutans plants showed an increase in aphid abundance when growing on refuse dumps. This resulted in a similar aphid load in both
thistle species when growing on refuse dumps. Accordingly, only C. nutans showed an increase in the number of ant species attending aphids when growing on refuse dumps. The increase of soil fertility
generated by leaf-cutting ant nests can affect aphid abundance and their tending ant assemblage through its effect on plant
size and quality. However, the propagation of small-scale soil disturbances through the trophic chain may depend on the identity
of the species involved. 相似文献

We use sample-based rarefaction curves to evaluate the efficiency of a rapid species richness assay of ground beetles and
ants captured in pitfall traps in the Nahuel Huapi National Park (NW Patagonia, Argentina). We ask whether ant species richness
patterns show some concordance with those of beetles, and use several extrapolation indices for estimating the expected number
of species at a regional scale. A total of 342 pitfall traps were spread in groups, at an intensity of 9 traps/100 m2, with two collection stations, at each of 19 sites representative of burned and unburned habitats in the forest, scrub and
steppe, along a west-to-east transect of 63 km long. The high regional habitat heterogeneity along the west-to-east gradient
is paralleled by a turnover of beetle and ant species, although different families of Coleoptera show idiosyncratic responses
across habitat types. Spatial stratification of sampling over three major habitats along with the inclusion of burned and
unburned environments may improve sampling efficiency. The observed and extrapolated species richness suggests that we captured
a high proportion of the total number of species of beetles and ants known for the region. However, trends in species richness
of ants may not indicate similar trends in beetles. Ants and beetles cannot be used as surrogate taxa for the analysis of
species richness patterns. Instead, both taxa should be considered as focal as they may offer complementary information for
the analysis of the effect of disturbance and regional habitat heterogeneity on species diversity patterns at a regional scale. 相似文献

Many structural, signaling, and adhesion molecules contain tandemly
repeated amino acid motifs. The alpha-actinin/spectrin/dystrophin
superfamily of F-actin-crosslinking proteins contains an array of triple
alpha-helical motifs (spectrin repeats). We present here the complete
sequence of the novel beta-spectrin isoform beta(Heavy)- spectrin (beta H).
The sequence of beta H supports the origin of alpha- and beta-spectrins
from a common ancestor, and we present a novel model for the origin of the
spectrins from a homodimeric actin-crosslinking precursor. The pattern of
similarity between the spectrin repeat units indicates that they have
evolved by a series of nested, nonuniform duplications. Furthermore, the
spectrins and dystrophins clearly have common ancestry, yet the repeat unit
is of a different length in each family. Together, these observations
suggest a dynamic period of increase in repeat number accompanied by
homogenization within each array by concerted evolution. However, today,
there is greater similarity of homologous repeats between species than
there is across repeats within species, suggesting that concerted evolution
ceased some time before the arthropod/vertebrate split. We propose a
two-phase model for the evolution of the spectrin repeat arrays in which an
initial phase of concerted evolution is subsequently retarded as each new
protein becomes constrained to a specific length and the repeats diverge at
the DNA level. This evolutionary model has general applicability to the
origins of the many other proteins that have tandemly repeated motifs.
