This communication reports gelation of lambda-carrageenan, for the first time, in the presence of trivalent iron ions. Kappa-, iota- and lambda-carrageenans are sulfated polysaccharides used extensively in food, pharmaceutical and medical applications. Kappa- and iota-carrageenans show gelation in the presence of mono- and di-valent ions, but lambda-carrageenan yields only viscous solutions. Our results show that gelation in lambda-carrageenan indeed is possible, but with trivalent ions. X-ray fiber diffraction patterns of iron (III)-lambda-carrageenan are characteristic of highly oriented and polycrystalline fibers containing well resolved Bragg reflections. The elastic modulus (G′) of the product is far greater than the loss modulus (G″) indicating the thermal stability of lambda-carrageenan in the presence of iron (III) ions. This novel finding has potential to expand lambda-carrageenan's current utility beyond a viscosifying agent.  相似文献

Chitosan is a partially deacetylated polymer of N-acetyl glucosamine. It is essentially a natural, water-soluble, derivative of cellulose with unique properties. Chitosan is usually prepared from chitin (2 acetamido-2-deoxy β-1,4-D-glucan) and chitin has been found in a wide range of natural sources (crustaceans, fungi, insects, annelids, molluscs, coelenterata etc.) However chitosan is only manufactured from crustaceans (crab and crayfish) primarily because a large amount of the crustacean exoskeleton is available as a by product of food processing. Squid pens (a waste byproduct of New Zealand squid processing) are a novel, renewable source of chitin and chitosan. Squid pens are currently regarded as waste and so the raw material is relatively cheap. This study was intended to assess the functional properties of squid pen chitosan. Chitosan was extracted from squid pens and assessed for composition, rheology, flocculation, film formation and antimicrobial properties. Crustacean chitosans were also assessed for comparison. Squid chitosan was colourless, had a low ash content and had significantly improved thickening and suspending properties. The flocculation capacity of squid chitosan was low in comparison with the crustacean sourced chitosans. However it should be possible to increase the flocculation capacity of squid pen chitosan by decreasing the degree of acetylation. Films made with squid chitosan were more elastic than crustacean chitosan with improved functional properties. This high quality chitosan could prove particularly suitable for medical/analytical applications. Taxonomic discrimination in the genus Pachymenia (Rhodophyta) in New Zealand is based primarily on phenotypic characters of the thallus. The taxonomic problems raised by this classification method are due to highly variable thallus characters such as blade thickness, blade width, degree of thallus branching, and variation in anatomical characters. Delineation of species is further complicated by a lack of adequate knowledge about the responses of phenotype to environmental variation. There are currently three species recognized in this genus that are endemic to New Zealand: a prostrate species P. crassa , and two erect species, P. laciniata and P. lusoria. In this study, two approaches are used to investigate the current delineation of these species. Morphological and anatomical characters of field collected material and herbarium specimens from throughout the species' distributional ranges were quantified. Multivariate analyses were used to identify discrete phenotypic groups. Species relationships were further analyzed by quantifying the variation found within the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) of the nuclear ribosomal DNA. The results obtained from both approaches will be discussed with regards to possible re-classification of species relationships within this genus. We suggest that the two erect species should be merged, and the currently recognized P. lusoria should be separated into at least two taxonomic groups.  相似文献

Two pairs of C(2)-symmetric tetrahydroxyazepanes [(-), (+)-1 and (-), (+)-2] have been synthesized from the enantiomeric chiro-inositols and evaluated as glycosidase inhibitors. Alternative syntheses of ido-tetrahydroxyazepanes (-)- and (+)-2 from myo-inositol were also developed. The key synthetic transformations were glycol fission and cyclization of the derived dialdehydes by double reductive amination. The D-manno-tetrahydroxyazepane [(-)-1] showed selective inhibition of alpha-L-fucosidase and beta-D-galactosidase, while the enantiomer [(+)-1] was a selective inhibitor of an alpha-D-galactosidase. In contrast, the L-ido-tetrahydroxyazepane (+)-2 was a broad spectrum hexosidase inhibitor, but showed none of the reported hexosaminidase inhibition. Its enantiomer (-)-2 is a poor hexosidase inhibitor.  相似文献

The 1D and 1L enantiomers of 1,2-anhydro-myo-inositol (conduritol B epoxide) were synthesised from 1D-pinitol and 1L-quebrachitol, respectively, and their activities were compared in selected glycosidase inhibition assays. The 1D enantiomer was found to be the active isomer, functioning as an irreversible inhibitor of sweet almond beta-D-glucosidase. Neither isomer was active against the alpha-D-glucosidase from Bacillus stearothermophilus or the beta-D-galactosidase from Aspergillus oryzae.  相似文献

The polysaccharide recovered after extraction of Champia novae-zealandiae is a galactan with alternating 3-linked d-galactopyranosyl units sulfated at the 2-position, and 4-linked galactopyranosyl units sulfated at both the 2- and 3-positions that are predominantly of the l- and partly of the d-configuration. Other minor substitution includes 6-O-methyl ether or 4,6-pyruvate acetal on the 3-linked residues. Techniques used in determining the structure include infrared and 13C-NMR spectroscopy, and GC-MS analysis of alditol acetate derivatives produced by reductive hydrolysis/acetylation of native, methylated, and/or desulfated samples. These results are of particular interest because 4-linked 2,3-desulfated galactosyl residues have not been encountered as major constituents of red algal polysaccharides.  相似文献

The use of a range of modern analytical techniques has facilitated the structural characterisation of the polysaccharide from the New Zealand endemic red alga, Callophyllis hombroniana. The native polysaccharide contains a number of structural units with the largest proportion consisting of 3-linked beta-D-galactopyranosyl 2-sulfate units, alternating with 4-linked 3,6-anhydro-alpha-D-galactopyranosyl 2-sulfate units, that is, theta-carrageenan (36 mol%). C. hombroniana is the first red seaweed reported to naturally contain such a large proportion of theta-carrageenan.  相似文献

The products from the enzymatic beta-D-galactopyranosylation of 1D-chiro-inositol, 1D-pinitol, 1D-3-O-allyl-4-O-methyl-chiro-inositol, 1D-3,4-di-O-methyl-chiro-inositol, 1L-chiro-inositol and myo-inositol in combined yields ranging from 46% to 64% have been obtained using the beta-galactosidase isolated from an anaerobic extreme thermophile, Thermoanaerobacter sp. strain TP6-B1 and p-nitrophenyl beta-D-galactopyranoside as the donor. Analysis of the products from these reactions reveals information about the acceptor preferences of the enzyme.  相似文献
