FREAN, M. L. & MARKS, E., 1988. Chromosome numbers of C3 and C4 variants within the species Alloteropais semialata (R.Br.) Hitch. (Poaceae). In a study of mid-lamina leaf sections, different variants of A. semialata were found to have C3 or C4 anatomy. The C4 leaf showed a specialized photosynthetic vascular bundle sheath not present in the C3 form. Chromosome counts made from pollen mother cell squashes showed that the C3 form of A. semialata is a fertile diploid 2n = 2x = 18 and the C4 form, a fertile allohexaploid 2n = 6x = 54. The cytological evidence suggests that the two forms should be considered as separate species.  相似文献

The grass Alloteropsis semialata (R.Br.) Hitchcock is uniquein that both Kranz and non-Kranz leaf anatomy has been reportedin this species. The present study investigates Kranz formsof A. semialata collected from a single ecological niche. Theseplants exhibit morphological and anatomical differences withrespect to leaf area, stomatal size and stomatal distribution.Carbon dioxide and water exchange measurements in the two formsshow the expected pattern of higher photosynthetic rate andhigher water utilization efficiency associated with Kranz anatomy. No intermediate physiological response or anatomical form wasobserved in this sample. Alloteropsis semialata (R.Br.) Hitchcock is a widely distributedgrass species known to show marked morphological, anatomicaland physiological variation. An unusual feature of this grassis that it shows both C3, and C4 photosynthetic pathways withthe respective anatomy related to these pathways in one speciesand within a single environment. This study investigates ultrastructuraldifferences between C3 and C4 forms of A. semialata, and showsdistribution of chlorenchyma in the two forms, at light microscopelevel. Quantitative assessment shows marked differences in mesophylland Kranz sheath cells with regard to size and organelle content;also in distribution of starch grains, lipid droplets and organellesin the mesophyll cells of both forms. These differences arediscussed in relation to the C3/C4 syndrome. Measurements were made using a Digiplan electronic planimeteron transmission electron micrographs of mature leaves sectionedtransversely at mid-lamina, and on drawings of leaf sectionsshowing the distribution of chlorenchymatous tissue. Ultrastructural and functional differences between the crossveins of Digitaria eriantha and Zea mays were investigated.Cross veins of both genera possess similar conducting tissues, namely one tracheary element and one sieve cell. In Digitariaeriantha these conducting elements are associated with onlytwo parenchyma cells, and, those in Zea mays are completelysurrounded by chJorenchyma cells. The protein ribulose 1,5-bisphosphatecarboxylase/oxygenase (rubisco) was used as a probe for CO2fixation sites by comparing its distribution in the varioustissue types in the leaves of the two genera. The protein wasfound to be equally and uniformly distributed in the stromalregions of the chlorenchyma sheath cell chloroplasts of longitudinalveins of both genera. The chlorenchyma sheath cells in crossveins of Zea mays show a similar distribution of the enzymeas the longitudinal bundles. However, this enzyme was shownto be absent in the cross vein parenchyma cells of Digitariaeriantha and in the mesophyll cells of both genera.
