Optimal Control of Gas Exchange during Drought: Empirical Evidence   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The optimal regulation model by Mäkelä, Berningerand Hari (Annals of Botany 77: 461–467, 1996) was appliedto data for photosynthesis and transpiration of Scots pine duringa 22-d drought period. There was a clear decrease in photosynthesisand transpiration during that period. The agreement betweenmodel and photosynthesis data was good. The residuals of photosynthesiswere not systematic with respect to temperature, irradianceor water vapour deficit. However, the model initially overestimatedtranspiration by 50%, although there was a clear linear relationshipbetween measured and estimated values. The results suggest thatthere was no decrease in photosynthetic capacity during theperiod, but a decrease in stomatal conductance was responsiblefor the changes in photosynthesis and transpiration. The Neogene cheilostomatous bryozoan Celleporaria palmata lived facultatively in association with the scleractinian coral Culicia. For Culicia the association was obligatory; the symbiosis was most probably mutualistic. Benefits for the coral appear to have been: (1) the bryozoan provided substrate in a soft-bottom environment; (2) the coral could feed at higher levels above the sediment; (3) the feeding currents generated by the bryozoan provided the corals with food (no competition for food would occur as the coral would collect larger prey); and (4) the surrounding of the cordites by the bryozoan provided strength and lateral protection. Benefits for the bryozoan appear to have been: (1) the stinging cells of the coral provided protection against predators and settlers; (2) the positioning of the corals on the maculae saved the bryozoan subsequent energy expenditure in further construction of polymorphs and secondary calcification. Negative effects for the bryozoan might have been the inhibition of possible functions of the maculae other than as exhalant chimneys, e.g., production and generation of male gametes. *** Symbiosis, mutualism, C ulicia , C ryptangia , C elleporaria , Bryozoa, Scleractinia.  相似文献

The stomatogastric nervous system of decapod crustaceansis an ideal system for the study of the processes underlyingthe generation of rhythmic movements by the nervous system.In this chapter we review recent work that uses mathematicalanalyses and computer simulations to understand: 1) the roleof individual currents in controlling the activity of neurons,and 2) the effects of electrical coupling on the activity ofneuronal oscillators. SUMMARY 1. We investigate the role of differential activity of chiro-nomids as an explanation for the size selection of small larvae by fish.
2. In the laboratory, pumpkinseed sunfish (Lepomis gibbosus L.) selectively consumed large larvae of Chironomus tentans Fab. when no tube-building materials were available. Small larvae were selectively consumed when a mud substrate was provided but there was no difference in predation rates on large and small larvae in sand.
3. Small larvae spent more time out of their tubes than large larvae in the presence of fish, which may explain the selection for small larvae in mud. Large larvae apparently compensated for decreased foraging activity in the presence of fish by increasing activity when fish were absent. Visibility of large larvae inside tubes may account for their increased mortality in sand.
4. Our results suggest that differential activity is important in explaining the size-selective mortality observed in the field.  相似文献

Data on re-mating between and within breeding seasons were collected between 1983 and 1994 as part of a long-term study of the Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus ruber roseus in the Camargue, southern France. Flamingos have bred in the Rhône delta for centuries and since 1972 have done so annually on an artificial island in the Etang du Fangassier. A sample of chicks has been ringed each year since 1977; many of these birds were later observed back at the breeding site and were used in this study. The mate-switching rate between consecutive breeding seasons was 98.3%. This result is contrary to what has been reported from captive flocks where extensive mate fidelity occurred between consecutive breeding seasons. Mate-switching also was observed in the Camargue within breeding seasons, following breeding failure, and seems to be linked to male breeding strategy in response to the need to synchronize hatching and the limited energy supply of breeding females. The absence of a long-term pair bond in Greater Flamingos contrasts with current views on the evolution of mate fidelity in relation to longevity in birds.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS Two glutamate dehydrogenases, NADH-linked (EC 1.2.1.2) and NADPH-linked (EC 1.2.1.4.) were isolated from the epimastigote forms of Trypanosoma cruzi and purified. Both enzymes exist as hexamers. The molecular weights of the native NADH-and NADPH-linked glutamate dehydrogenases were estimated to be 360,000 and 265,000, respectively, and those of the subunits to be 58,000 and 43,000, respectively. The isoelectric point of the NADH-linked dehydrogenase is at pH 5.25 and that of the NADPH-linked enzyme at pH 5.1. The activities of both enzymes are regulated by product inhibition. In addition, purine nucleotides were shown to be potent inhibitors of the NADH-linked glutamate dehydrogenase.  相似文献

The neotropical loricarioid catfishes include six families, the most species‐rich of which are the Callichthyidae and the Loricariidae. Loricariidae (suckermouth armoured catfishes) have a highly specialized head morphology, including an exceptionally large number of muscles derived from the adductor mandibulae complex and the adductor arcus palatini. Terminology of these muscles varies among the literature, and no data exist on their ontogenetic origin. A detailed examination of the ontogeny of both a callichthyid and a loricariid representative now reveals the identity of the jaw and maxillary barbel musculature, and supports new hypotheses concerning homologies. The adductor mandibulae muscle itself is homologous to the A1‐OST and A3′ of basal catfishes, and the A3′ has given rise to the newly evolved loricariid retractor veli as well. The A2 and A3″ have resulted in the retractor tentaculi of Callichthyidae and the retractor premaxillae of Loricariidae. Thus, these two muscles are shown to be homologous. In Loricariidae, the extensor tentaculi consists of two separate muscles inserting on the autopalatine, and evidence is given on the evolutionary origin of the loricariid levator tentaculi (previously and erroneously known as retractor tentaculi) from the extensor tentaculi, and not the adductor mandibulae complex. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 155 , 76–96.  相似文献

Extracellular action potentials found close to the surface of motoneurons are related to the intracellular spikes. Evidence is cited to support the assumption that the extracellular spikes have the same time course as the membrane current at the site of recording. Simultaneously recorded intracellular and extracellular spikes are compared. Intracellular spikes are transformed, by means of a circuit which is equivalent to the extracellular recording situation, into transients that are like those appearing extracellularly. Evidence is given that the recordings are from the cell bodies of motoneurons. The results show that the membrane at the extracellular recording site does not produce a spike since the time course of the extracellular potentials is determined by the passive properties of the membrane.  相似文献
