We studied leaves of 208 seedlings (S), infants (I) and juveniles(J) ofEuterpe edulis, randomly selected from plants in 1 ha ofswampy forest in SE Brazil. Each new leaf began extending afterthe complete development of the preceding leaf. The sequencesteps of leaf growth were emergence, linear growth while closed, opening of segments and logarithmic growth of the petiole. Averageleaf production rate (2.21 leaves per plant year-1) did notvary among ontogenetic stages, conforming to a plastochronicrhythm. Average linear growth rate of the closed leaf was directlyrelated to average area of the open lamina. Herbivores attacked33.0% of all leaves giving rise to up to 10% loss of area andincluded damping-off-inducing suckers (7.1%), ordinary suckers(9.8%), chewers (5.4%), miners (2.7%) and multiple attacks (8.0%).These attacks varied among stages (S=22.4%, I=38.1%, J=33.3%),as did leaf mortality rates (S=26.5%, I=14.3% and J=0.0%). Unknownfactors were the main cause of leaf mortality (S=14.3%, I=7.1%).Not losing a leaf while a seedling and attaining a minimum leafarea in the infant stage were critical events for survival.Plants gained leaf area by not losing leaves while a seedling,by producing larger leaves with greater growth rates, and byaccumulating leaves with longer lifespans. The petiole can simulatean energetically cheaper branch, delimit a vital space aroundthe stem, favourably position the leaf lamina and substituteprovisionally for stem growth in height.Copyright 1999 Annalsof Botany Company Arecaceae,Euterpe edulis, herbivory, leaf ecology, leaf growth, leaf production, semideciduous forest, southeastern Brazil.  相似文献

Gagea tisoniana Peruzzi et al. sp. nov. is described and its taxonomic relationship is discussed. The new species, which appears to be endemic to central Italy, is close to G. pratensis (Pers.) Dumort., G. pusilla (F. W. Schmidt) Sweet, and other mainly poorly known [i.e. G. succedanea Griseb. et Schenk, G. transversalis Stev., and G. paczoskii (Zapal.) Grossh.] or as yet undescribed taxa from eastern Europe and the eastern Mediterranean area. The recognition of the new taxon G. tisoniana is claimed on the basis of anatomical, karyological, ecological, and phytogeographical data. Maps of the Italian distribution of G. pratensis (2 n  = 60), G. pusilla (2 n  = 24), and G. tisoniana (2 n  = 24) are presented, together with an analytical identification key. Finally, G. pratensis is recorded here for the first time in Tuscany (Monte Cetona).  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 155 , 337–347.  相似文献

During 1996 and 1997, foraging Rock Shags Phalacrocorax magellanicus were studied at Punta Loma, Argentina using radio-transmitters deployed on ten adult shags during the chick-rearing period. Rock Shags undertook 2.6 ± 0.6 sd trips per day. The mean duration of a feeding trip was 2.6 ± 0.7 hours. A bird spent 36% of daylight hours away from the colony on feeding trips, diving for 92% of the foraging trip, and made a mean of 106 dives per foraging trip. Foraging trip duration was strongly correlated with the total number of dives made in one foraging trip. Rock Shags fed mainly in water less than 10m deep with a gravelly sand bottom and within 5 km of shore. Mean foraging range was 3.8 ± 2.6 km and 2.6 ± 2.3 km for 1996 and 1997, respectively. These results suggest a high foraging effort (diving time per foraging trip) for Rock Shags, presumably associated with poor food conditions close to the colony. Comparison is made with other Phalacrocorax species.  相似文献

A microsatellite‐enriched genomic library was obtained from the common sole, Solea vulgaris, and seven polymorphic dinucleotide markers were successfully optimized. These markers showed levels of expected heterozygosity ranging from 0.55 to 0.83 and allele number ranging from eight to 12. Three of these markers were also found to successfully amplify in the closely related Solea senegalensis and can be employed to define population genetic structure of the two Solea species and for inferring stock origins.  相似文献

Radiotelemetry was used to assess the distribution and diving behaviour of Rock Shags Phalacrocorax magellanicus and Red-legged Cormorants Phalacrocorax gaimardi breeding in sympatry, and Rock Shags breeding in isolation. When breeding in sympatry there was little overlap in the foraging locations of the two species, with the highest densities of each species separated by 10 km. Red-legged Cormorants fed significantly closer to the breeding colony than did Rock Shags and undertook shorter foraging trips, making almost twice as many foraging trips per day as Rock Shags. Rock Shags breeding in isolation had a shorter foraging range than the birds breeding in sympatry with Red-legged Cormorants and foraging trip duration was significantly shorter. However, the number of feeding trips per day was similar between areas of sympatry and allopatry. Differences in the foraging ecology of Rock Shags in areas of sympatry and allopatry may be due to interspecific competition, which forces niche differentiation. The distance between foraging sites, the speed of movement of the prey, a species tendency to move into prey-depleted areas and the length of the breeding season (during which the birds are constrained to be in the same area) may play critical roles in determining the extent to which differential area use by competitors is a strategy that benefits both parties.  相似文献

Tropical forest ecosystems play an important role in the global carbon balance. Depending on age and land use, they can act as carbon sources, sinks, or be in approximate balance, but it is uncertain if global environmental changes are forcing these ecosystems outside their natural range of variation. We asked the question of whether or not the net carbon flux of a tropical primary forest, which should be in balance over the long term, is within the expected range of natural variation. A simple Bayesian hypothesis testing method was used to address this question for primary forests in the Porce region of Colombia. Net ecosystem production (NEP) was measured in this forest in a set of 33 permanent plots from 2000 to 2002 in 2, 1‐year intervals. Our estimate of NEP ranged between −4.03 and 2.22 Mg C ha−1 yr−1 for the two intervals. This range was compared with a priori defined range of natural variation estimated from the ecosystem model STANDCARB, which estimated spatial and temporal variation due to gap dynamics. The prior range of variation was estimated between −1.5 and 1.5 Mg C ha−1 yr−1. The observed data on NEP did not provide sufficient evidence to reject the null hypothesis that these forests are in C balance. We concluded that the ecosystem is likely behaving within its range of natural variation, but measurement uncertainties were a major limitation to finding evidence to reject the null hypothesis. A literature review of C flux studies in the tropics revealed that about half of the observations could be explained by gap dynamics alone, while significant C sinks have only been observed during La Niña years, with contrasting results in other tropical forests. In conclusion, observational data of carbon fluxes do not appear to provide direct evidence for a significant carbon sink in some sites in the tropics.  相似文献

Abstract. Along a stable temperature gradient and under a LD 12:12 h cycle, nurse workers of the ant Camponotus mus Roger 1863 (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) select for the brood two different temperatures daily: 30.8°C at the middle of the light period (circadian phase = 90°), and 27.5°C 8 h later, during the dark period (circadian phase = 210°), this rhythm being of endogenous nature. When a 24 h temperature cycle was superimposed along the thermal gradient, so that the immobile brood experienced a temperature transition as they receive when translocated by nurses (8 h at 30.8°C and 16 h at 27.5°C), no brood translocations occurred. The thermal cycle masked the rhythm of brood translocation when temperature fitted the daily pattern expected by nurses. When the same temperature cycle was presented with a phase-advance, nurses did not tolerate the early thermal increase and removed the brood as temperature rose. However, when workers experienced this new phase relationship between light and temperature cycles for more than 10 days, brood translocations were suppressed.Records under constant conditions of light and temperature indicated that the overt rhythm was locked-on to the expected early increase in temperature, so that the temperature cycle dominated over the LD cycle in resetting brood-carrying activity.  相似文献
