The distribution of the 346 hydromedusan species hitherto recorded from the Mediterranean is considered, dividing the species into zoogeographical groups. The consequences for dispersal due to possession or lack of a medusa stage in the life cycle are discussed, and related to actual known distributions. There is contradictory evidence for an influence of life cycle patterns on species distribution. The Mediterranean hydromedusan fauna is composed of 19.5% endemic species. Their origin is debatable. The majority of the remaining Mediterranean species is present in the Atlantic, with various world distributions, and could have entered the Mediterranean from Gibraltar after the Messinian crisis. Only 8.0% of the fauna is classified as Indo-Pacific, the species being mainly restricted to the eastern basin, some of which have presumably migrated from the Red Sea via the Suez Canal, being then classifiable as Lessepsian migrants. The importance of historical and climatic factors in determining the composition of the Mediterranean fauna of hydromedusae is discussed.  相似文献

We investigated the photosynthetic limitations occurring during dehydration and rehydration of Xerophyta humilis, a poikilochlorophyllous resurrection plant, and whether volatile and non‐volatile isoprenoids might be involved in desiccation tolerance. Photosynthesis declined rapidly after dehydration below 85% relative water content (RWC). Raising intercellular CO2 concentrations during desiccation suggest that the main photosynthetic limitation was photochemical, affecting energy‐dependent RuBP regeneration. Imaging fluorescence confirmed that both the number of photosystem II (PSII) functional reaction centres and their efficiency were impaired under progressive dehydration, and revealed the occurrence of heterogeneous photosynthesis during desiccation, being the basal leaf area more resistant to the stress. Full recovery in photosynthetic parameters occurred on rehydration, confirming that photosynthetic limitations were fully reversible and that no permanent damage occurred. During desiccation, zeaxanthin and lutein increased only when photosynthesis had ceased, implying that these isoprenoids do not directly scavenge reactive oxygen species, but rather protect photosynthetic membranes from damage and consequent denaturation. X. humilis was found to emit isoprene, a volatile isoprenoid that acts as a membrane strengthener in plants. Isoprene emission was stimulated by drought and peaked at 80% RWC. We surmise that isoprene and non‐volatile isoprenoids cooperate in reducing membrane damage in X. humilis, isoprene being effective when desiccation is moderate while non‐volatile isoprenoids operate when water deficit is more extreme.  相似文献

The previously unknown life cycle of the parasitic hydroid Hydrichthys mirus is described. The adult medusa has 5–6 tentacles and could be referred to Leuckartiara. Another species of Hydrichthys has previously been shown to have a Stomotoca -like medusa, characterized by the possession of two tentacles. It is proposed that Hydrichthys originated from the Leuckartiara lineage and that, through paedomorphosis in at least one species, the medusa retained the two-tentacle state of the newly-released medusa of all pandeids, thus becoming referable to Stomotoca. It is suggested that Stomotoca has hitherto constituted a polyphyletic taxon, embracing parallel lineages of pandeids, each retaining juvenile features. An additional genus, Larsonia , is introduced to accommodate species with Stomotoca-like medusae and Hydrichthys -like hydroids.  相似文献

The previously unknown life cycles of Ocioiiara russelli and Stomoroca alru are described. Both species present differentiated hydroids and medusae. From the morphology of the newly liberated medusae both species are referred to the Pandeidae and, from the presence of a manubrial peduncle, to the subfamily Stomotocinae. together with Timoides . Some aspects of feeding and gonad growth are described and discussed.  相似文献

We have previously reported that patients with active vitiligo (AVP) have elevated urinary levels of catecholamine metabolites, such as homovanillic and vanilmandelic acids, irrespective of the form of the disease (acrofacial, segmental, generalized). We have suggested that abnormal release of catecholamines from autonomic nerve endings might play an etiological role in the onset and development of vitiligo through an overproduction of toxic (oxy)radicals in the microenvironment of melanocytes in the affected areas. In the present study we have investigated whether this suggested increase in radicals might be associated with an oxidative stress in the blood of AVP. We have analyzed by gas-chromatography mass-spectrometry, by high pressure liquid chromatography, by spectophotometry plasma levels of vitamin E (Vit E), lipoperoxides (LIP), and polyunsaturated fatty acids of phospholipids (PL-FA), erythrocyte reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities in 62 patients affected with different forms of active vitiligo (acrofacial, segmental, generalized) and in 60 age-matched controls. Our results show that blood levels of Vit E, SOD, GSH, GSH-Px activity, LIP and PL-FA in AVP were not significantly different from those of healthy age matched controls, indicating that melanocyte damage in vitiligo is not linked with a generalized oxidative stress.  相似文献

The levels of some catecholamine metabolites, namely homovanillic acid (HVA), vanil-mandelic acid (VMA), 3-methoxytyramine (MT), normetanephrine (NMN), metanephrine (MN), 3,4-dihydroxy mandelic acid (DOMAC), and 3,4-dihydroxy phenylacetic acid (DOPAC), have been evaluated in the 24 hr urines of 150 patients affected with different types of vitiligo and in 50 healthy age-matched individuals. The patients were divided into three groups according to the different phases of the disease. The first group included subjects affected either with the early active phase or with progressive increase in both number and/or the size of previous lesions. The second group included patients in whom no new lesions had appeared for between 4-8 months. In the third group the white areas had been stable for 1-5 years. The first and second groups showed values of HVA and VMA from 4 to 10 times and from ½ to 3 times higher respectively than those of controls, while no significant differences were found between the third group and controls. Our results clearly show that a significant increase of urinary levels of HVA and VMA, deriving respectively from dopamine and from norepinephrine and epinephrine characterizes the onset and the progressive active phases of vitiligo, irrespective of the type of distribution. The increased release of catecholamines from the autonomic nerve endings in the microenvironment of melanocytes in the affected skin areas might be involved in the etiopathogenesis of vitiligo through two main mechanisms: (1) a direct cytotoxic action of catecholamines and/or their o-diphenol catabolites; (2) an indirect action. Skin and mucosa arterioles possess α receptors, activation of which by catecholamine discharge may cause a severe vasoconstriction, leading to epidermal and dermal hypoxia with hyperproduction of toxic oxyradicals generated by different pathways. In both cases a genetic predisposition due to insufficient radical scavengers in the affected areas should be taken into account.  相似文献

Abstract.  The maize stemborer Sesamia nonagrioides glues its egg masses under the leaf sheaths or ear bracts using colleterial gland secretion. In spite of such concealed oviposition sites, these eggs are parasitized by Telenomus busseolae. The colleterial glands of S. nonagrioides are investigated as a possible source of the host-recognition kairomone for T. busseolae . This secretion, applied on glass beads, elicits intense antennal drumming and oviposition probing behaviour in the parasitoid. Through an histochemical study, neutral and acid glycoconjugates are identified as components of the secretion. Finally, using ultrastructural techniques, the colleterial glands are described and classified as comprising class 3 secretory cells.  相似文献

Abstract.  Wind tunnel and vertical open Y-shaped olfactometer studies are used to test whether volatile cues from the host plant ( Vicia faba ), from conspecific bugs, and from a plant–conspecifics combination, would elicit behavioural responses in mated males and females of Lygus rugulipennis . In the olfactometer, females move towards volatiles from healthy plants but they do not respond to volatiles released by oviposition- and/or feeding-damaged plants without conspecifics, nor to conspecifics alone. Both in the wind tunnel and olfactometer, females respond to volatiles emitted by the plant–insect complex. By contrast, in the wind tunnel, both sexes move significantly towards damaged host plants, even if the presence of conspecifics on these plants enhances only the female response. However, the presence of eggs from conspecifics on host plants reduces the responses of both sexes in the wind tunnel. Finally, males, as well as females, are less responsive to conspecifics alone compared with damaged plants, especially when conspecifics are present on the host plants (host plant– Lygus complex). The results suggest that volatiles emitted by plants and conspecifics influence L.   rugulipennis behaviour, giving information to both sexes on the presence of suitable host plants that have been colonized by other conspecifics acting as pioneers, or providing information on the presence of an already exploited host plant (presence of eggs), thus preventing competition. Males also can use this information to increase the probability of encountering mature females.  相似文献
