Cane toads (Bufo marinus) are now moving about 5 times faster through tropical Australia than they did a half-century ago, during the early phases of toad invasion. Radio-tracking has revealed higher daily rates of displacement by toads at the invasion front compared to those from long-colonised areas: toads from frontal populations follow straighter paths, move more often, and move further per displacement than do toads from older (long-established) populations. Are these higher movement rates of invasion-front toads associated with modified locomotor performance (e.g. speed, endurance)? In an outdoor raceway, toads collected from the invasion front had similar speeds, but threefold greater endurance, compared to conspecifics collected from a long-established population. Thus, increased daily displacement in invasion-front toads does not appear to be driven by changes in locomotor speed. Instead, increased dispersal is associated with higher endurance, suggesting that invasion-front toads tend to spend more time moving than do their less dispersive conspecifics. Whether this increased endurance is a cause or consequence of behavioural shifts associated with rapid dispersal is unclear. Nonetheless, shifts in endurance between frontal and core populations of this invasive species point to the complex panoply of traits affected by selection for increased dispersal ability on expanding population fronts.  相似文献

Growing cultures of Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum were supplemented with [U-14C]adenosine or [1-14C]adenosine. 7,8-Didemethyl-8-hydroxy-5-deazariboflavin (factor F0) and 7-methylpterin were isolated from the culture medium. Hydrolysis of cellular RNA yielded purine and pyrimidine nucleotides. The ribose side chain of proffered adenosine is efficiently incorporated into cellular adenosine and guanosine nucleotide pools but not into pyrimidine nucleotides. Thus, M. thermoautotrophicum can utilize exogenous adenosine by direct phosphorylation without hydrolysis of the glycosidic bond, and AMP can be efficiently converted to GMP. Factor F0 and 7-methylpterin had approximately the same specific activities as the purine nucleotides. It follows that the ribityl side chain of factor F0 is derived from the ribose side chain of a nucleotide precursor by reduction. Observatories are designed to collect data for a range of uses. The Australian Acoustic Observatory (A2O) was established to collect environmental sound, including audible species calls, from 344 recorders at 86 sites around Australia. We examine the potential of the A2O to monitor near threatened, threatened, endangered and critically endangered species, based on their vocal behaviour, geographic distributions in relation to the sites of the A2O and on some knowledge of habitat use. Using IUCN and EPBC lists of threatened and endangered species, we extracted species that vocalized in the audible range, and using conservative estimates of their geographic ranges, determined whether there was a possibility of hearing them at these sites. We found that it may be possible to detect up to 171 threatened species at sites established for the A2O, and that individual sites have the potential to detect up to 40 threatened species. All 86 sites occurred in locations where threatened species could possibly be detected, and the list of detectable species included birds, amphibians, and mammals. We have incidentally detected one mammal and four bird species in the data during other work. Threatening processes to which potentially detectable species were exposed included all but two IUCN threat categories. We concluded that with applications of technology to search the audio data from the A2O, it could serve as an important tool for monitoring threatened species.  相似文献

Life history theory suggests that the optimal evolved level of reproductive effort (RE) for an organism depends upon the degree to which additional current reproductive investment reduces future reproductive output. Future reproduction can be decreased in two ways, through (i) decreases in the organism's survival rate, and/or (ii) decreases in the organism's growth (and hence subsequent fecundity). The latter tradeoff–that is, the “potential fecundity cost”—should affect the evolution of RE only in species with relatively high survival rate, a relatively high rate of fecundity increase with body size, or a relatively high reproductive frequency per annum. Unless these conditions are met, the probable benefit in future fecundity obtained from decreasing present reproductive output is too low for natural selection to favor any reduction in RE below the maximum physiologically possible. Published data on survival rate, reproductive frequency and relative clutch mass (RCM) suggest that many lizard species fall well below the level at which natural selection can be expected to influence RE through such “potential fecundity” tradeoffs. Hence, the relative allocation of resources between growth and reproduction is unlikely to be directly optimized by natural selection in these animals. Instead, energy allocation should influence the evolution of RE only indirectly, via effects on an organism's probability of survival during reproduction. Survival costs of reproduction may be the most important evolutionary determinants of RE in many reptiles, and information on the nature and extent of such costs is needed before valid measures of reptilian RE can be constructed.  相似文献

The biosynthesis of deazaflavins, flavins, ribonucleotides, and selected amino acids was studied in Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum by incorporation of 13C-labeled acetate and pyruvate. 13C enrichments were monitored by 13C and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The biosynthesis of ribonucleotides follows the standard pathway. The xylene ring of riboflavin is formed from two pentose moieties in agreement with studies in yeasts and eubacteria. The pyrimidine ring and the ribityl side chain of the deazaflavin chromophore of coenzyme F420 are derived from the purine nucleotide pool. The phenolic ring and C-5 of the deazaflavin system are supplied by the shikimate pathway. A hypothetical mechanism for the assembly of the deazaflavin chromophore from 5-amino-6-ribitylamino-2,4-(1H,3H)-pyrimidinedione and 4-hydroxyphenyl-pyruvate is proposed.  相似文献

Summary Chamaedorea bartlingiana is a dioecious palm that grows in the cloud forest understories of the Venezuelan Andes. Age and sexual differences in phenology and reproductive patterns were studied in labelled individuals of all age categories. This species has long-lived leaves and low leaf production, both characteristic of understory plants. Growth rates are lower in juveniles than in adults and in females than in males, as in other palms. Male and female individuals show different reproductive patterns. Male inflorescences are always produced at the same rate and the probability of surviving until anthesis is constant. Females produce reproductive buds at the same rate as males, but these buds have a 35% probability of becoming a ripe infrutescence if the plant has infrutescences already growing, and 70% if it does not. This pattern and the slow growth of inflorescences (1 year for males from bud to flowers, 2 years for females from bud to ripe fruits) cause a pluriannual reproductive pattern at the population level. Field germination does not follow this pattern, but shows one annual peak probably related to environmental conditions.  相似文献

Abstract

Many studies describe the advantages of using hydrophobic particles on lipase immobilisation. However, many of these works neglect the effect of other variables of the supports, such as specific area and porosity, on the biocatalyst performance, and do not evaluate the influence of the hydrophobicity level of the particles on the biocatalysts’ activity as a single variable. Thus, the focus of the present work was to evaluate the effect of the hydrophobicity degree of polymeric particles on the biocatalysts’ activities, mitigating the influence of other variables. The study was divided into two steps. Firstly, distinct particles, exhibiting different composition and hydrophobicity levels, were used for the immobilization of a commercial lipase B from Candida antarctica (CAL-B). Then, distinct core-shell polymeric particles presenting different functional compounds on the surface were produced, using as comonomers styrene, divinylbenzene, 1-octene, vinylbenzoate and cardanol. Such particles were subsequently used for CAL-B immobilisation and the performance of the biocatalysts was evaluated on hydrolysis (using p-nitrophenyl laurate, as substrate) and esterification (using ethanol and oleic acid, as substrate) reactions. Based on the screening step, it was observed that for non-porous particles the correlation coefficients between the hydrophobicity level of the supports and the biocatalysts performance, for both hydrolysis and esterification reactions, were very low (0.32 and 0.45, respectively). It highlights that there was no significant correlation between these variables and that, probably, the chemical composition of the polymeric chains affects more significantly the biocatalyst performance. Then, analysing the subsequent stage, it was observed that small changes in the surface composition of the core-shell particles result in significant changes on the textural properties of the supports (specific area ranging from 1.2?m2.g?1 to 18.3?m2.g?1; and contact angles ranging from 71° (hydrophilic particles) to 92° (hydrophobic supports) when polymer films were put in contact with water). Such particles were also employed on CAL-B immobilization and it was noticed that higher correlation coefficients were achieved for hydrolysis (ρ?=?0.53) and esterification (ρ?=?0.74) reactions. Therefore, it is shown that the hydrophobicity degree of such supports starts to affect more effectively the biocatalysts performance when other textural features of the supports become more significant, such as specific area and porosity.  相似文献

Infectious diseases can cause population declines and even extinctions. The amphibian chytrid fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), has caused population declines and extinctions in amphibians on most continents. In the tropics, research on the dynamics of this disease has focused on amphibian populations in mountainous areas. In most of these areas, high and low elevation sites are connected by an assemblage of streams that may transport the infectious stage of the pathogen from high to low elevations, and, also, this pathogen, which grows well at cool temperatures, may persist better in cooler water flowing from high elevations. Thus, the dynamics of disease at low elevation sites without aquatic connections to higher elevation sites, i.e., non-contiguous low elevation sites, may differ from dynamics at contiguous low elevation sites. We sampled adult common mistfrogs (Litoria rheocola) at six sites of three types: two at high (> 400m) elevations, two at low elevations contiguous with high elevation streams, and two at low elevations non-contiguous with any high elevation site. Adults were swabbed for Bd diagnosis from June 2010 to June 2011 in each season, over a total of five sampling periods. The prevalence of Bd fluctuated seasonally and was highest in winter across all site types. Site type significantly affected seasonal patterns of prevalence of Bd. Prevalence remained well above zero throughout the year at the high elevation sites. Prevalence declined to lower levels in contiguous low sites, and reached near-zero at non-contiguous low sites. Patterns of air temperature fluctuation were very similar at both the low elevation site types, suggesting that differences in water connectivity to high sites may have affected the seasonal dynamics of Bd prevalence between contiguous and non-contiguous low elevation site types. Our results also suggest that reservoir hosts may be important in the persistence of disease at low elevations.  相似文献

The heteropentameric condensin complexes have been shown to participate in mitotic chromosome condensation and to be required for unperturbed chromatid segregation in nuclear divisions. Vertebrates have two condensin complexes, condensin I and condensin II, which contain the same structural maintenance of chromosomes (SMC) subunits SMC2 and SMC4, but differ in their composition of non–SMC subunits. While a clear biochemical and functional distinction between condensin I and condensin II has been established in vertebrates, the situation in Drosophila melanogaster is less defined. Since Drosophila lacks a clear homolog for the condensin II–specific subunit Cap-G2, the condensin I subunit Cap-G has been hypothesized to be part of both complexes. In vivo microscopy revealed that a functional Cap-G-EGFP variant shows a distinct nuclear enrichment during interphase, which is reminiscent of condensin II localization in vertebrates and contrasts with the cytoplasmic enrichment observed for the other EGFP-fused condensin I subunits. However, we show that this nuclear localization is dispensable for Cap-G chromatin association, for its assembly into the condensin I complex and, importantly, for development into a viable and fertile adult animal. Immunoprecipitation analyses and complex formation studies provide evidence that Cap-G does not associate with condensin II–specific subunits, while it can be readily detected in complexes with condensin I–specific proteins in vitro and in vivo. Mass-spectrometric analyses of proteins associated with the condensin II–specific subunit Cap-H2 not only fail to identify Cap-G but also the other known condensin II–specific homolog Cap-D3. As condensin II–specific subunits are also not found associated with SMC2, our results question the existence of a soluble condensin II complex in Drosophila.  相似文献
