Similar hypotensive responses to resistance exercise with and without blood flow restriction

Low intensity resistance exercise (RE) with blood flow restriction (BFR) has gained attention in the literature due to the beneficial effects on functional and morphological variables, similar to those observed during traditional RE without BFR, while the effects of BFR on post-exercise hypotension remain unclear. The aim of the present study was to compare the blood pressure (BP) response of trained normotensive individuals to RE with and without BFR. In this cross-over randomized trial, eight male subjects (23.8 ± 4 years, 74 ± 3 kg, 174 ± 4 cm) completed two exercise protocols: traditional RE (3 x 10 repetitions at 70% one-repetition maximum [1-RM]) and low intensity RE (3 x 15 repetitions at 20% 1-RM) with BFR. Blood pressure measurements were performed after 15 min of seated rest (0), immediately after and 10 min, 20 min, 30 min, 40 min, 50 min and 60 min after the experimental sessions. Similar hypotensive effects for systolic BP (SBP) were observed for both protocols (P < 0.05) after exercise, with no differences between groups (P > 0.05) and no statistically significant difference for diastolic BP (P > 0.05). These results suggest that in normotensive trained individuals, both traditional RE and RE with BFR induce hypotension for SBP, which is important to prevent cardiovascular disturbances.     

The role of cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases in the regulation of adipocyte lipolysis

This study assessed the effects of selective inhibitors of 3',5'-cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases (PDEs) on adipocyte lipolysis. IC224, a selective inhibitor of type 1 phosphodiesterase (PDE1), suppressed lipolysis in murine 3T3-L1 adipocytes (69.6 +/- 5.4% of vehicle control) but had no effect in human adipocytes. IC933, a selective inhibitor of PDE2, had no effect on lipolysis in either cultured murine 3T3-L1 adipocytes or human adipocytes. Inhibition of PDE3 with cilostamide moderately stimulated lipolysis in murine 3T3-L1 and rat adipocytes (397 +/- 25% and 235 +/- 26% of control, respectively) and markedly stimulated lipolysis in human adipocytes (932 +/- 7.6% of control). Inhibition of PDE4 with rolipram moderately stimulated lipolysis in murine 3T3-L1 adipocytes (291 +/- 13% of control) and weakly stimulated lipolysis in rat adipocytes (149 +/- 7.0% of control) but had no effect on lipolysis in human adipocytes. Cultured adipocytes also responded differently to a combination of PDE3 and PDE4 inhibitors. Simultaneous exposure to cilostamide and rolipram had a synergistic effect on lipolysis in murine 3T3-L1 and rat adipocytes but not in human adipocytes. Hence, the relative importance of PDE3 and PDE4 in regulating lipolysis differed in cultured murine, rat, and human adipocytes.     

Local endemism and within‐island diversification of shrews illustrate the importance of speciation in building Sundaland mammal diversity

Island systems are important models for evolutionary biology because they provide convenient, discrete biogeographic units of study. Continental islands with a history of intermittent dry land connections confound the discrete definitions of islands and have led zoologists to predict (i) little differentiation of terrestrial organisms among continental shelf islands and (ii) extinction, rather than speciation, to be the main cause of differences in community composition among islands. However, few continental island systems have been subjected to well‐sampled phylogeographic studies, leaving these biogeographic assumptions of connectivity largely untested. We analysed nine unlinked loci from shrews of the genus Crocidura from seven mountains and two lowland localities on the Sundaic continental shelf islands of Sumatra and Java. Coalescent species delimitation strongly supported all currently recognized Crocidura species from Sumatra (six species) and Java (five species), as well as one undescribed species endemic to each island. We find that nearly all species of Crocidura in the region are endemic to a single island and several of these have their closest relative(s) on the same island. Intra‐island genetic divergence among allopatric, conspecific populations is often substantial, perhaps indicating species‐level diversity remains underestimated. One recent (Pleistocene) speciation event generated two morphologically distinct, syntopic species on Java, further highlighting the prevalence of within‐island diversification. Our results suggest that both between‐ and within‐island speciation processes generated local endemism in Sundaland, supplementing the traditional view that the region's fauna is relictual and primarily governed by extinction.     

Reconstruction of the breast after mastectomy for cancer.

Seventeen women who had had a mastectomy for cancer of the breast underwent reconstructions. Alloplastic implants were used in all. Preservation of the nipple and areola was possible in some of these patients. The normal (or uninvolved) breast sometimes required reduction in size or reshaping, to match as nearly as possible the reconstructed breast. The conditions suitable and unsuitable for mammary reconstruction, after mastectomy for cancer, are discussed.
