No guidelines are currently available that advise which soil properties of arable land can be used to suggest suitable locations for heathland reconstruction. This paper reviews studies comparing soil properties of heathland or semi-natural grassland with those of adjacent arable fields, investigations in the autecology of the dominant heathland plant, Calluna vulgaris (common heather), and long-term experiments of fertilizer inputs on arable soils. Three properties must be assessed before the suitability of a field can be determined: extractable phosphorus, exchangeable calcium, and pH. A number of other nutrients may also be important, but evidence is currently insufficient to substantiate this. Natural changes in levels of extractable phosphorus, exchangeable calcium, and pH appear to be very slow, so nutrient stripping and acidification will be necessary where recommended levels are exceeded to successfully restore heathland vegetation.  相似文献

In C4 plants phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) of the C4 cycle may betransported on a chloroplast transporter which also transports3-phosphoglycerate (3-PGA) and triosephosphates. In C3 plantsPEP is not considered to be effectively transported on the chloroplastphosphate translocator. The influences of certain organic phosphates,having a similar structure to either PEP or triose-phosphates,on 3-PGA dependent O2 evolution by C4 (Digitaria sanquinalisL. Scop.) and C3 (Hordeum vulgare L.) mesophyll chloroplastswere investigated. In the C4 mesophyll chloroplasts phosphoglycolatewas a competitive inhibitor (Ki = 2.1 mM) of 3-PGA dependentO2 evolution, and was as effective as previously reported forPEP. 2-Phosphoglycerate was also a competitive inhibitor (Kt= 8.6 mM) of O2 evolution in the C4 mesophyll chloroplasts with3-PGA as substrate, while phospholactate was a weak inhibitorand glyphosate had no effect. Neither PEP, phosphoglycolatenor 2-phosphoglycerate were effective inhibitors of 3- PGA dependentO2 evolution in the C3 chloroplasts. Phosphohydroxypyruvatewas a competitive inhibitor of 3-PGA dependent O22 evolutionin both chloroplast types. The selectivity in inhibition ofO2 evolution with 3-PGA as substrate suggests that the C4 mesophyllchloroplasts can recognize certain organic phosphates with thephosphate in the C-2 or C-3 position but that the C4 mesophyllchloroplasts can only effectively recognize certain organicphosphates with the phosphate in the C-3 position. A radioimmunoassay for 3′-iodothyronine has been developed. All iodothyronine analogues (except 3,3′-diiodothyronine) showed very little (0.02% at most) cross-reactivity, and the assay was sensitive to 1 pg 3′-iodothyronine/ tube. We have studied the 5′-deiodination of 3′,5′-diiodothyronine by rat liver microsomal fraction in the presence of dithiothreitol. Production of 3′-iodothyronine at 37°C was found to be linear with time of incubation up to 30 min and with concentration of microsomal protein up to 100 μg/ml. The reaction rate reached a limit on increasing 3′,5′-diiodothyronine concentration to 10 μM. The effect of pH on 3′-iodothyronine production was found to depend on 3′,5′-diiodothyronine concentration. Increasing 3′,5′-diiodothyronine concentration from 0.1 to 10 μM resulted in a shift of the pH optimum from 6–6.5 to 7.5. Similar effects on the 5′-deiodination of 3,3′,5′-triiodothyronine were observed, supporting the hypothesis that these reactions are catalysed by a single enzyme (iodothyronine 5′-deiodinase).  相似文献

We have been interested in the metabolic fate of proteins containing aspartyl succinimide (Asu) residues. These residues can be derived from the spontaneous rearrangement of Asp and Asn residues and from the spontaneous demethylation of enzymatically methylated L-isoAsp and D-Asp residues. Incubation of the synthetic hexapeptide N-Ac-Val-Tyr-Pro-Asu-Gly-Ala with the cytosolic fraction of human erythrocytes resulted in rapid cleavage of the prolyl-aspartyl succinimide bond producing the tripeptide N-Ac-Val-Tyr-Pro. The rate of this reaction is equal for both L- and D-Asu-containing peptides and is 10-fold greater than the rate of cleavage of a corresponding peptide containing a normal Pro-Asp linkage. When the aspartyl succinimide ring was replaced with an isoaspartyl residue, the cleavage rate was about 5 times that of the normal Pro-Asp peptide. The tripeptide-producing activity copurified on DEAE-cellulose chromatography with an activity that cleaves N-carbobenzoxy-Gly-Pro-4-methylcoumarin-7-amide, a post-proline endopeptidase substrate. These two activities were both inhibited by an antiserum to rat brain post-proline endopeptidase, and it appears that they are catalyzed by the same enzyme. This enzyme has a molecular weight of approximately 80,000 and is covalently labeled and inhibited by [3H]diisopropyl fluorophosphate. The facile cleavage of the succinimide- and isoaspartyl-containing peptides by this post-proline endopeptidase suggests that it may play a role in the metabolism of peptides containing altered aspartyl residues.  相似文献
