Man has exploited land and forests in Western and Central Europe longer and more intensively than in Northern Europe and further east in Eurasia. We estimated forest naturalness and modelled expected biodiversity loss in seven different landscapes (2500 km2 each) in the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Poland, St. Petersburg (Western European Russia), Perm (Eastern European Russia), and Irkutsk (Central Siberia) across the distribution of Pinus sylvestris L. in Eurasia. Field inventories showed that the mean living tree volumes were relatively similar in the studied sites, but the volumes of dead wood differed greatly. In Irkutsk and Perm the volume of dead trees per ha was about 5–10 times larger than in Central and Western European regions. The studied forests were generally young in all regions except for Irkutsk, where about half of the study plots had trees older than 120 years. Signs of recent forest fires were found almost exclusively on Russian sites. According to Landsat satellite image-based land-cover classifications the amount of remaining forest habitat in the studied landscapes varied from 25% in the Netherlands to 93% in Irkutsk. Estimated by forest patch size and density of cut stumps, forests were also more fragmented and heavily managed in the western study landscapes compared to eastern ones. Based on species–area relationship functions, we calculated that the proportion of forest-dwelling species already extinct or expected to become extinct due to habitat loss ranges from 1–2% in Irkutsk to 13–24% in the Netherlands study landscape. For saproxylic species, which depend on dead wood, the extinction estimates were calculated based on remaining dead wood volume in the landscape. The modelled expected loss of saproxylic species ranged from 7–14% in Irkutsk to 35–58% in the Netherlands.  相似文献

Contagious mucocutaneous dermatitis is a frequently encountered disease of mountain hares (Lepidus timidus) in Finland. We describe the histopathologic changes and propose an etiologic cause for this disorder. Fifty-three cases collected during 1982-2000 were examined histologically. Transmission electron microscopy was performed in one case. In fully developed lesions, keratinocytes in epidermis and follicular infundibula were swollen and contained large eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies with marked reticular and ballooning degeneration. In later stages, there was marked necrosis and ulceration with severe pyogranulomatous and suppurative inflammation. At this stage, no viral inclusions were detectable, but secondary Staphylococcus warnerii infection was present in most cases. In late lesions, there was dermal fibrosis with epidermal hyperplasia. No spiral-shaped bacteria suggesting treponematosis were detected at any stage. Ultrastructurally, swollen epidermal and follicle infundibular cells contained round intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies with a myriad of virions typical of poxvirus with a biconcave nucleocapsid core, two lateral bodies, and a clearly discernible outer lipoprotein capsule. The findings suggest that contagious mucocutaneous dermatitis in mountain hares is a viral disease caused by a poxvirus. The disease is often complicated by secondary bacterial infection, most commonly S. warneri.  相似文献

To evaluate the influence of age and gender on the neuroendocrine control of blood pressure in normal subjects, a 13-min 70 degrees head-up tilt (HUT) was applied after 3 h of recumbency to 109 healthy men and women aged 23-50 yr (age group I) and 51-77 yr (age group II). We found that age and gender had a significant influence on plasma norepinephrine (PNE) concentration at baseline and in the upright position. PNE was significantly higher in older men compared with the younger men and women of both age groups, suggesting a divergent age-related activation of the sympathetic nervous system between genders at baseline as well as during a sustained orthostatic challenge. There was no significant influence of age or gender on plasma epinephrine at baseline or during HUT. Plasma renin activity was significantly higher at baseline as well as in the upright position during HUT in elderly men than in women. Age or gender had no influence on plasma vasopressin (PAVP), and, regardless of age, nonhypotensive HUT induced an extremely modest increase in PAVP. The syncopal subjects displayed a hormonal pattern associating increased PNE and a surge in plasma epinephrine and PAVP minutes before syncope during HUT. The orthostatic intolerance appears not to be a feature of healthy aging per se. In healthy subjects, both age and gender modulate markedly the cardiovascular and neuroendocrine responses to an orthostatic challenge and must be taken into consideration, particularly when catecholamine responses are studied.  相似文献

1.  Optimal parental sex allocation depends on the balance between the costs of investing into sons vs. daughters and the benefits calculated as fitness returns. The outcome of this equation varies with the life history of the species, as well as the state of the individual and the quality of the environment.
2.  We studied maternal allocation and subsequent fecundity costs of bank voles, Myodes glareolus , by manipulating both the postnatal sex ratio (all-male/all-female litters) and the quality of rearing environment (through manipulation of litter size by −2/+2 pups) of their offspring in a laboratory setting.
3.  We found that mothers clearly biased their allocation to female rather than male offspring regardless of their own body condition. Male pups had a significantly lower growth rate than female pups, so that at weaning, males from enlarged litters were the smallest. Mothers produced more milk for female litters and also defended them more intensively than male offspring.
4.  The results agree with the predictions based on the bank vole life history: there will be selection for greater investment in daughters rather than sons, as a larger size seems to be more influencial for female reproductive success in this species. Our finding could be a general rule in highly polygynous, but weakly dimorphic small mammals where females are territorial.
5.  The results disagree with the narrow sense Trivers & Willard hypothesis, which states that in polygynous mammals that show higher variation in male than in female reproductive success, high-quality mothers are expected to invest more in sons than in daughters.  相似文献

Objective: We investigated the impact of a three‐amino acid deletion (12Glu9) polymorphism in the α2B‐adrenergic receptor gene on autonomic nervous function. The short form (Glu9/Glu9) of the polymorphism has previously been associated with a reduced basal metabolic rate in obese subjects. Because autonomic nervous function participates in the regulation of energy metabolism, there could be a link between this polymorphism and autonomic nervous function. Research Methods and Procedures: Data of a 10‐year follow‐up study with 126 nondiabetic control subjects and 84 type 2 diabetic patients were used to determine the effects of the 12Glu9 polymorphism on autonomic nervous function. A deep breathing test and an orthostatic test were used to investigate parasympathetic and sympathetic autonomic nervous function. In addition, cardiovascular autonomic function was studied using power spectral analysis of heart rate variability. Results: No significant differences were found in the frequency of the 12Glu9 deletion polymorphism between nondiabetic and diabetic subjects. The nondiabetic men with the Glu9/Glu9 genotype, especially those with abdominal obesity, had significantly lower total and low‐frequency power values in the power spectral analysis when compared with other men. Furthermore, in a longitudinal analysis of 10 years, the decrease in parasympathetic function was greater in nondiabetic men with the Glu9/Glu9 genotype than in the men with the Glu9/Glu12 or Glu12/Glu12 genotypes. Discussion: The results of the present study suggest that the 12Glu9 polymorphism of the α2B‐adrenergic receptor gene modulates autonomic nervous function in Finnish nondiabetic men. In the nondiabetic men with the Glu9/Glu9 genotype, the general autonomic tone is depressed, and vagal activity especially becomes impaired with time. Combined administration of methylglyoxal-bis-guanylhydrazone (MGBG) (25 mg/kg) with difluoromethylornithine (DFMO), or MGBG alone at a higher dose (50 mg/kg), to mice resulted in a decreased white cell count (WBC) in the peripheral blood while DFMO or MGBG alone at a lower dose (25 mg/kg) had no effect. As expected, DFMO alone increased the number of colony forming units spleen (CFU-s), colony forming units diffusion chamber granulocyte (CFU-dg) and colony forming units culture (CFU-c) in the bone marrow. MGBG treatment led to an increase in CFU-dg alone. Combined treatment seemingly had no effect on marrow stem cells. Total tibial and differential counts were not affected by any of the treatments. Cell proliferation in diffusion chamber cultures, as judged by CFU-dg colony formation, was impaired by MGBG alone or in combination with DFMO, at dose levels which had no effect or increased the precursor cell number in the bone marrow. This effect was partially reversed with either putrescine or spermidine. Determination of intracellular polyamine concentrations, demonstrated decreased putrescine and spermidine levels after DFMO administration. As expected, MGBG treatment resulted in decreased spermidine and spermine levels, concomitant with an increase in putrescine. In mice which received both agents, rather than only MGBG, after 3 days higher intracellular polyamine concentrations were observed. After 11 days, however, there was no significant difference between the two groups.  相似文献

Summary A double antibody solid-phase (DASP) radioimmunoassay for staphylococcal enterotoxin A is described. In the assay the antigen-antibody complex is precipitated by anti-rabbit serum which is adsorbed onto a solid carrier (cellulose). The method is sensitive to 200 pg of enterotoxin. It was possible to detect as little as 2–5 ng enterotoxin A/ml food extract from minced meat and sausage. Enterotoxins B and C were not found to inhibit the uptake of labeled enterotoxin A at a level which might distort the results of the enterotoxin A assay. The DASP technique is sensitive, rapid, and easy to perform and thus compares favorably with other radioimmunoassays for enterotoxin.  相似文献
