Changes in phytoplankton community composition potentially affect the entire marine food web. Because of seasonal cycles and inter-annual variations in species composition, long-term monitoring, covering many sequential years, is required to establish a baseline study and to reveal long-term trends. The current study describes the phytoplankton biomass variations and species composition in relation to hydrographic and meteorological conditions in the Raunefjord, western Norway, over a 6-year period from 2001 to 2006. The extent of inflow or upwelling in the fjord varied from year to year and resulted in pronounced differences in water column stability. The annual phytoplankton community succession showed some repeated seasonal patterns, but also high variability between years. Two to four diatom blooms were observed per year, and the spring blooms occurring before water column stratification in March were dominated by Skeletonema marinoi and Chaetoceros socialis, and other Chaetoceros and Thalassiosira spp. Blooms of the haptophytes Phaeocystis pouchetii and Emiliania huxleyi were irregular and in some years totally absent. Although E. huxleyi was present all year round it appeared in bloom concentrations only in 2003, when the summer was warm and the water column characterized by high surface temperatures and pronounced stratification. The annual average abundance of both diatoms and flagellates increased during the six years. Despite the high variation from year to year, our investigation provides valuable knowledge about annual phytoplankton community patterns in the region, and can be used as a reference to detect possible future changes. 相似文献

We investigated the relationship between site productivity and diversity of vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens, and polypore fungi in forests based on species richness data in 0.25 ha forest plots (grain size), selected from six 150–200 ha study areas (focus), and spanning over a latitudinal distance of 1350 km (extent) in Norway. We 1) searched for prevailing productivity-diversity relationships (PDRs), 2) compared PDRs among taxonomic groups and species found in different micro-habitats, and 3) investigated the effect of increasing plot (grain) size on PDRs. Using vegetation types as a surrogate for site productivity, we found a general pattern of increasing species richness with site productivity. On average total species richness doubled with a ten-fold increase in productivity. Lichens PDRs stood out as less pronounced and more variable than for other species groups investigated. PDRs of species associated with downed logs tended to level off at high-productive sites, a pattern interpreted as an effect of disturbance. Increasing the grain size >10-fold did not change the proportional difference in species richness between sites with high and low productivity. 相似文献

Effects on the aquatic biota of lime (CaCO3) application in acidified lakes and streams were studied in a number of waters. After treatment, lime-sensitive species of mosses (Sphagnum spp.) decreased, but species such as Potamogeton natans and Myriophyllum alterniflorum seemed to be favoured. A few years after liming species composition and diversity of phytoplankton, zooplankton and benthic insect larvae were almost identical to that found in oligotrophic and non-acid lakes. Molluscs and benthic crustaceans may have difficulties recolonizing. Reproduction of remaining species of fish was successful as soon as pH increased. High survival of larvae and fry can result in some extremely rich year classes with slow individual growth. In most cases restocking of depleted fish stocks was successful. 相似文献

Summary The protective influence of bovine serum albumin against growth inhibition caused by fatty acids was studied in human hepatoma
(HepG2) and immortalized human kidney epithelial (IHKE) cells. In general, growth inhibition by unsaturated fatty acids (0.15
mmol/liter) increased with increasing number of double bonds. For HepG2 cells crude albumin (1g/100 ml) did not greatly modify growth inhibition by arachidonic, eicosapentaenoic, and docosahexaenoic acid. With oleic,
linoleic, and linolenic acids, crude and defatted albumin stimulated cell growth. In contrast, for IHKE cells both albumins
counteracted growth inhibition by unsaturated fatty acids to approximately the same extent. When HepG2 cells were cultured
in the presence of saturated fatty acids (0.3 mmol/liter), C2, C6, and C8 had no or little inhibitory effect. C10 and C12
inhibited cell growth appreciably, whereas C14, and especially C16, had poor inhibitory effects. Crude albumin counteracted
growth inhibition by all these fatty acids. In contrast, defatted albumin had little or no effect (except against C10 and
C12), and even increased the growth inhibition by C14 and C16. With unsaturated fatty acids there seemed to be an inverse
relationship between cell growth and the concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in media. Vitamin
E abolished growth inhibition (and the increase in TBARS concentration) by unsaturated fatty acids. The complex interaction

Cessation of shoot elongation in seedlings of Salix pentandra L. is induced by short photoperiod. Gibbereliin A9 (GA9 ) applied either to the apical bud or injected into a mature leaf, induced shoot elongation under a short photoperiod of 12 h, and GA9 could completely substitute for a transfer to a long photoperiod. When [3 H]GA9 or [2 H2 ]GA9 was injected into a leaf, no [3 H]GA9 was detected in the elongating apex and only traces of [3 H]GA9 were found in the shoot above the treated leaf. By the use of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), [2 H2 ]GA20 was identified as the main metabolite of [2 H2 ]GA9 in both the shoot and the treated leaf. In addition, [2 H2 ]GA1 and [2 H2 ]GA29 were also identified as metabolites of [2 H2 ]GA9 . These results are consistent with the hypothesis that exogenous GA, promotes shoot elongation in Salix through its metabolism to GA20 and GA,. 相似文献

A growing concern for the high consumption of antibiotics in aquaculture has initiated a search for alternative methods of
disease control. Improved resistance against infectious diseases can be achieved by the use of probiotics. Probiotics are
live microorganisms supplemented in food or feed which give beneficial effects on the intestinal microbial balance. In the
present study a dry feed containing lactic acid bacteria (Carnobacterium divergens) isolated from Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua)intestines
was given to cod fry. After three weeks of feeding the fry was exposed to a virulent strain of Vibrio anguillarum. The death
rate was recorded during further three weeks of feeding with lactic acid bacteria supplemented feed. A certain improvement
of disease resistance was obtained, and at the end of the experiment lactic acid bacteria dominated the intestinal flora in
surviving fish given feed supplemented with lactic acid bacteria. No obvious growth inhibition of V. anguillarum was observed
in an in vitro mixed culture of this bacterium and the C. divergens isolated from cod intestines.

A new method for preparing non-parenchymal rat liver cells (NPC) is described. The liver cell suspension, prepared by perfusing the liver with collagenase, was treated with enterotoxin from Clostridium perfringens for 15 min. The enterotoxin made the parenchymal cells leaky, and these cells could be separated from the NPC by centrifugation in a solution containing Nycodenz (20%, w/v). During the centrifugation, the NPC floated, while the parenchymal cells sedimented. The yield of NPC per liver (200 g rat) was about 250 X 10(6) cells. The NPC were further separated into endothelial cells, Kupffer cells and stellate cells by centrifugal elutriation. This method was particularly useful for preparing endothelial cells in high yield (100 X 10(6) cells per liver). Intravenously injected formaldehyde-treated albumin was selectively taken up by the endothelial cells. Isolated endothelial cells in suspension as well as in surface culture maintained their ability to endocytose this ligand. 相似文献

Population structure, density and reproductive potential of perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) from 4 acidified lakes in a river system in Southern Norway were investigated. The upper 3 lakes were most affected by acidification and the number of perch caught per unit effort indicate three-fold increase in density from the upper Gjerstadvann to the lower Brøbørvann. Low density of perch in the upper lakes is explained by; 1) Abnormal mortality occurring in episodes due to acidification, probably caused by aluminium toxicity at pH = 5.2–5.4. 2). Acid water (pH ≤ 5.0) during spawning and development of eggs and larvae, resulting in recruitment failure. Juvenile mortality of perch may depend on the density of the parental stock. In the 3 upper lakes, the density of adult perch probably was too low to produce significant juvenile mortality, and in these lakes the recruitment probably depended more on the May water quality. Improved water quality increases egg hatching and survival and also benefits zooplankton production, the main food for perch during the first summer. Low population density has reduced competition for food and thus improved growth of perch in the 3 upper lakes compared to the lower lake. The perch in Brøbørvann mature at higher age and have lower individual fecundity than perch in Gjerstadvann, an effect of both slower growth and lower length specific fecundity in Brøbørvann. In Gjerstadvann, the perch therefore have a higher reproductive potential relative to the stock density, and may, when the water quality is good enough, give rise to strong year-classes and more frequent year-class fluctuations than perch in the less acid Brøbørvann. 相似文献

Identification and characterization of two huge protein components of the brush border cytoskeleton: evidence for a cellular isoform of titin 下载免费PDF全文
Two extremely high molecular weight proteins were found to be components of the intestinal epithelial cell brush border cytoskeleton. The largest brush border protein, designated T-protein, migrated on SDS gels as a doublet of polypeptides with molecular weights similar to muscle titin T I and T II. The other large brush border protein, designated N-protein, was found to have a polypeptide molecular weight similar to muscle nebulin. In Western analysis, a polyclonal antibody raised against brush border T-protein reacted specifically with T-protein in isolated brush borders and cross-reacted with titin in pectoralis and cardiac muscle samples. T-protein was distinguished from the muscle titins by an anti-cardiac titin mAb. A polyclonal antibody raised against N-protein was specific for N-protein in brush borders and cross-reacted with nothing in pectoralis muscle. Immunolocalization in cryosections of intestinal epithelia and SDS-PAGE analysis of fractionated brush borders revealed that both T-protein and N-protein are concentrated distinctly in the brush border terminal web region subjacent to the microvilli, but absent from the microvilli. EM of rotary-replicated T-protein samples revealed many of the molecules to be long (912 +/- 40 nm) and fibrous with a globular head on one end. In some of the molecules, the head domain appeared to be extended in a fibrous conformation yielding T-protein up to 1,700-nm long. The brush border N-protein was found as long polymers with a repeating structural unit of approximately 450 nm. Our findings indicate that brush border T-protein is a cellular isoform of titin and suggest that both T-protein and N-protein play structural roles in the brush border terminal web. 相似文献
