ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to compare chronotype preferences of college students from high- and low-altitude backgrounds living in a tropical setting of Ethiopia. Chronotype (morningness–eveningness) is a preference for a given time of day for physical or mental activities. The present cross-sectional study employed Horne and Osteberg Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaires to evaluate chronotype preferences. The chronotype preference of 264 male college students from varied altitude backgrounds indicated significant differences (p < 0.001). Our findings confirm our hypothesis, of the prevalence of M-types dominant chronotype among college students at low than high altitude. However, we did not confirm our second hypothesis, since students from high-altitude backgrounds were generally I-type dominant chronotype. Similarly, students’ academic performances from low- compared to high-altitudes backgrounds also indicated significant differences (p < 0.003). Better academic performances were seen in students with I-type chronotype orientations from high altitudes.  相似文献

Nitric oxide (NO) plays a role in a series of neurobiological functions, underlying behavior and memory. The functional role of nNOS derived NO in cognitive functions, however, is elusive. We decided to study cognitive functions in the Morris water maze (MWM) and the multiple T-maze (MTM) in 3-month-old male nNOS-knock-out mice (nNOS KO). To study the influence of neurology and behavior, we performed tests in an observational battery, the rota-rod, the elevated plus maze (EPM), the open field (OF), and a social interaction test. In the memory and relearning task of the MWM, most nNOS KO failed whereas performing better in the MTM. nNOS KO displayed significantly increased frequency of grooming, center crossings, and entries into the center in the OF. The observational battery revealed significantly increased scores for touch-escape reaction, body position, locomotion, and pelvic- and tail-elevation together with reduced vocalization. In the EPM, the time spent in the closed arm and the grooming frequency were significantly increased whereas urination was absent. We conclude that nNOS KO show impaired spatial performance in the MWM and herewith confirm the role of nNOS in cognitive functions such as processing, maintenance, and recall of memory. It must be taken into account that the major behavioral findings of increased grooming and anxiety-related behaviors may have led to impaired function in the MWM. The fact that nNOS KO performed well in the MTM, reflecting a low stress situation points to the interpretation that nNOS inhibition affects cognitive functions under stressful conditions (MWM) only.  相似文献

The natural history of Pygidianops amphioxus de Pinna and Kirovskyi (Neotropical Ichthyology 9:493–504, 2011), a highly specialized sand-dwelling catfish species, was studied based on underwater observations in a small forest stream in the central Amazon. Information on the feeding and reproductive biology was obtained by means of analyses of preserved specimens. These miniature catfishes remained buried in the sand at the bottom of the stream and were never observed swimming in open water. The catfish consumed small benthic invertebrates, particularly Chironomidae larvae and Harpacticoida copepods, which were most likely captured by suction feeding inside the sand banks. Pygidianops amphioxus displays sexual dimorphism in the shape of the urogenital papilla and in the body length, with adult females being relatively longer than males. Sexually mature females were found throughout the year and carried a small number of proportionally very large oocytes. A short duration (24 h) experiment conducted in aquaria revealed that these small catfishes exhibit the predominantly nocturnal habits typical of most Siluriformes.  相似文献

This study aimed to characterize the food intake by the fish assemblage inhabiting aquatic macrophytes stands, evaluating the changes in food availability among the periods of the hydrologic cycle and the trophic responses of the fish assemblage along with food availability. Fish sampling was conducted in stands of aquatic macrophytes (predominantly Paspalum repens, Poaceae) along banks of the Trombetas River during the four hydrologic periods (rising, high, receding, and low water level) that represent different phenological conditions of the habitat. The food consumption by the fish assemblage was analyzed for 41 species with stomach contents. The assemblage fed mainly on aquatic insects, periphytic algae and detritus. Food availability analysis showed that food resources changed among periods. Fifteen species were present in more than one period and most of those species showed dietary changes along with the hydrologic cycle, feeding mainly on invertebrates in the rising water period and periphytic algae and detritus in receding and low water periods. Only four species showed sufficient numbers to be analyzed in relation to diet and food availability along the at least three hydrologic periods, two of which showed a positive correlation between diet and food availability for three of the four periods; the other two species did not show this correlation, and presented omnivorous habits. In all cases, the selectivity values for the most important food items were near zero, indicating that intake was not motivated by feeding preference. Our results suggest that both trophic plasticity and omnivorous diets are important adaptations for species that inhabit temporally variable habitats such as aquatic macrophytes stands.  相似文献

Optical imaging through biological samples is compromised by tissue scattering and currently various approaches aim to overcome this limitation. In this paper we demonstrate that an all optical technique, based on non-linear upconversion of infrared ultrashort laser pulses and on multiple view acquisition, allows the reduction of scattering effects in tomographic imaging. This technique, namely Time-Gated Optical Projection Tomography (TGOPT), is used to reconstruct three dimensionally the internal structure of adult zebrafish without staining or clearing agents. This method extends the use of Optical Projection Tomography to optically diffusive samples yielding reconstructions with reduced artifacts, increased contrast and improved resolution with respect to those obtained with non-gated techniques. The paper shows that TGOPT is particularly suited for imaging the skeletal system and nervous structures of adult zebrafish.  相似文献

The human SAMHD1 protein potently restricts lentiviral infection in dendritic cells and monocyte/macrophages but is antagonized by the primate lentiviral protein Vpx, which targets SAMHD1 for degradation. However, only two of eight primate lentivirus lineages encode Vpx, whereas its paralog, Vpr, is conserved across all extant primate lentiviruses. We find that not only multiple Vpx but also some Vpr proteins are able to degrade SAMHD1, and such antagonism led to dramatic positive selection of SAMHD1 in the primate subfamily Cercopithecinae. Residues that have evolved under positive selection precisely determine sensitivity to Vpx/Vpr degradation and alter binding specificity. By overlaying these functional analyses on a phylogenetic framework of Vpr and Vpx evolution, we can decipher the chronology of acquisition of SAMHD1-degrading abilities in lentiviruses. We conclude that vpr neofunctionalized to degrade SAMHD1 even prior to the birth of a separate vpx gene, thereby initiating an evolutionary arms race with SAMHD1.  相似文献

Surface-enhanced Raman spectra of membrane protein, located in native mem brane, bacteriorhodopsin, adsorbed by silver electrodes and hydrosols have been obtained for the first time. The distance between the retinal Schiff’s base and the external side of purple membrane of Halobacteriim halobiim was shown to be 6–9 A. The possible distribition of the point charges aroind protonated retinal Schiff’s base has been proposed on the basis of the resonance Raman data and quantim chemical CNDO/S-CI calculations. Such a model contains tyrosine residue located near the retinal Schiff’s base and connected with COO- groipvia hydrogen bond COO- group acts as a protonated Schiff’s base counterion. The distance between oxygen atoms of COO- group and retinal Schiff’s base plane is 2.5–3.0A. The hydrogen bond (O-H. . .O-) length between oxygen atom of OH-group and oxygen atom of COO- group has been chosen 2.7±0.1Å Tyrosine hydroxyl group is located at 2.8–3.5 A from retinal Schiff’s base plane. It was shown that in contrast to generally accepted Honig and Nakanishi model the spectral properties of Brh570, K610, L550 and M4Ï2 forms of bacteriorhodopsin photocycle as well as observed tyrosine deprotonation and COO- group protonation during M412 formation can be explained reasonably well by the suggested charge distribution. Furthermore, such a model of bacteriorhodopsin active site microenvironment allows to explain catalyzing of photo-induced protonated retinal Schiff’s base deprotonation observed in our preliminary experiments.  相似文献
