Abstract. 1. A positive correlation between the tongue length of conspecific workers collecting nectar from seven plant species and the corolla length of the flowers probed was found for B.lapidarius and B.pascuomm but not B.terrestris . No simple relationship was found between the volume, sugar weight or concentration of nectar in flowers and the tongue or wing length of probing bees.

B.terrestris workers collecting pollen from four plant species producing pollen only, were found to differ in size according to the type of pollen presentation mechanism and the pollen content per flower. Body size variation was also related to the foraging of pollen plus nectar from two other plant species.  相似文献

Abstract This study reports on preliminary findings of habitat‐contingent temporal variability in ant assemblages in Purnululu National Park in northern Australia's semiarid tropics, by sampling at the end of the dry season (October 2004) and the end of the wet season (April 2005). Six grids of 15 pitfall traps were established in each of the spinifex, sandplain and gorge habitats. Community composition was dominated by behaviourally dominant ants (Iridomyrmex spp.) and climate specialists (Melophorus and Meranoplus spp.). Ant activity was higher in the wet season sampling period, with greater species richness and abundance. Interestingly, temporal variation in ant assemblage richness, abundance and composition varied markedly with habitat type. While there were large differences between sampling periods for the spinifex and sandplain habitat, this was not the case in the gorges. These temporal changes in ant assemblages are postulated to be linked with major environmental differences between the two sampling periods, driven by seasonal climatic conditions. It is likely that these changes influenced the ant assemblages through species differences in physiological tolerance levels, ecological requirements and competitive ability. This study demonstrates the need, in highly seasonal environments, to consider the temporal context of studies in relation to habitat type, particularly when undertaking biodiversity surveys and monitoring.  相似文献

Some characteristics of the association between lactic acid bacteria and pig squamous epithelial cells were studied. Strains from several sources were tested for adhesion in vitro but only those from pigs and chickens attached. The adhesion rate of pig isolates was very variable and, of the isolates tested, strains of Lactobacillus fermentum and Streptococcus salivarius attached in largest numbers. These strains were selected for further study. They did not attach to columnar epithelial cells from the small and large intestine. Adhesion was reduced by sodium periodate or protease. Both strains had a microcapsule with fibrils which stained with ruthenium red. The adhesive bond between lactobacilli and squamous tissue was strong enough to resist washing 50 times but there was a persistent release of bacteria during the washing process. When the strains of both species or of L. fermentum alone were fed to artificially reared pigs there was a statistically significant reduction in the numbers of Escherichia coli in the stomach.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The effects of some environmental influences on the cycle of Trypanosoma diemyctyli in Triturus v. viridescens are described. Bleeding of the host produced a reduction in the number of trypanosomes but did not affect their growth rate. The temperature at which the host was maintained affected the cycle of the trypanosomes. The length of the post-inoculation latent stage increased from 24 hours at 25°C. to an indefinitely long time at 5°C. The trypanosomes were found to be dimorphic. Adult parasites of the short form had a range of 45–75 μ and those of the long form of 76–116 μ. Growth rate of the trypanosomes was inhibited or greatly retarded at temperatures of 10°C. or lower and was greatest at 25°C. The size attained by the parasites and the number of parasites were greatest at 15°C. At this temperature the infection was pathogenic and the dimorphic parasites were in their long form. At the higher temperatures (20–25°C.) the infection was non-pathogenic with the trypanosomes in their short form.
The infection is primarily one of adult newts. Experiments indicated that the larvae were resistant to the trypanosomes at all temperatures while the red efts were not. The latter are usually free from the trypanosomes because they are not exposed to them. Attempts to infect other newts and to locate any cryptic stages by the injection of blood and tissues from infected newts gave negative results.
Starvation, sodium salicylate, and treatments used to control fungus infection of the newts had no detectable effects on the trypanosomes.  相似文献

The clade Talpidae consists of specialized fossorial forms, shrew‐like moles and semi‐aquatic desmans. As with all higher jawed vertebrates, different functional, phylogenetic and developmental constraints act on different parts of dentary influencing its shape. In order to determine whether morphological variation in the dentary was unified or dispersed into an integrated complex of structural–functional components, a morphometric analysis of the mole dentary was undertaken. The dentary was subdivided into component parts – horizonal ramus; coronoid, condylar, angular processes of the ascending ramus – and outline‐based geometric morphometric methods used to quantify, compare and contrast modes of shape variation within the clade. These were successful in revealing subtle differences and aspects of shape important in distinguishing between mole genera. Closer examination of shape variation within the two fully fossorial mole clades (Talpini and Scalopini) revealed several similarities in ascending ramus shapes between genera from each clade. For example, the broad, truncated appearance of the coronoid process in the talpine genera Talpa and Parascalops was shared with the scalopine genus Scapanus. Also, the more slender, hook‐shaped coronoid process of Euroscaptor and Parascaptor (Talpini) closely resembles that of Scalopus (Scalopini). Interestingly, subspecies (one from each clade) more closely resembled genera other than their own in coronoid process shape. Important distinctions in horizontal ramus shape were found to exist between the two clades, such as the extent of curvature of the ventral margin and relative depth of the horizontal ramus. Results show shape variation in this region is correlated with dental formulae and the relative sizes of the teeth. The taxonomically important dentition differences characteristic of mammals are also reflected in the horizontal ramus results. Moreover, these results suggest size may be affecting shape and the extent of variation in, for example, the coronoid and condylar processes between the semi‐aquatic moles Desmana and Galemys. It is likely that the effects of morphological integration seen at this level of analysis – covariation between shapes of dentary components – may exist because interacting traits are evolving together. Horizontal ramus and coronoid process shape, for example, are similar across Scapanus and Parascalops, but both these shapes have diverged in Scalopus. © 2008 Trustees of the Natural History Museum (London).
