Sex differences in immune function are relatively well studied in vertebrate animals, although the patterns are not always clear in birds. The study of immune responses in nestlings of wild bird populations may constitute an appropriate way to investigate inherent intersexual differences while controlling for environmental conditions such as parasitism that affect male and female individuals growing in the same nest. We studied whether the cell‐mediated immune response, as measured by phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) injection, and the levels of circulating antibodies differ between sexes of Pied Flycatcher nestlings Ficedula hypoleuca. No sex differences in nestling cell‐mediated immune response were found, but females showed significantly higher levels of plasma immunoglobulins than males did. Although nestling birds may not have a fully functional humoral immune defence, our study indicates that sex differences in the humoral component exist at this early stage of life. Given the importance of antibodies in the fight against parasite, bacterial and viral infections, the intrinsic sex disparity in circulating antibodies may have important implications for the life history of each sex.  相似文献

A multivariate morphometric study of Daniellia, an endemic genus of tropical and subtropical Africa, indicates that nine species may be recognized: D. alsteeniana, D. klainei, D. oblonga, D. ogea, D. oliveri, D. pilosa, D. pynaertii, D. soyauxii and D. thurifera. In our study we found that some characters, not previously studied in detail, were significant in species delimitation: petiole indumentum, petiole width, number and position of glands on the lower surface of the leaflets and presence or absence of glands at the insertion of each pair of leaflets. The rare and scattered material of D. pilosa and D. soyauxii made their classification uncertain, although some qualitative characters support their differentiation. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 159 , 268–279.  相似文献

This study provides a checklist of the Caesalpinioideae (Leguminosae) present in Equatorial Guinea, comprising 52 genera and 124 taxa. Seven species are known from Annobón, 33 from Bioko and 109 from Río Muni. The best represented genus is Senna with eight species. In addition, bibliographic references for Caesalpinioideae (Leguminosae) from Equatorial Guinea have been gathered and checked. Fourteen species are included based on literature records, because their distribution ranges suggest they may occur in Equatorial Guinea, 11 introduced species could be naturalized, and 45 taxa are recorded for the first time from the country. This represents an increase of over 35% in the floristic knowledge of Caesalpinioideae from Equatorial Guinea. Ten microsatellite loci were developed for the Baja California spiny‐tailed iguana Ctenosaura hemilopha, using an enriched genomic DNA library. In the Cerralvo Island population, seven loci were polymorphic and presented moderate levels of variation. Number of alleles ranged from two to eight (average 4.43), and observed heterozygosity from 0.150 to 0.857 (average 0.492). Polymorphism was detected at six loci on C. hemilopha individuals from the southern Baja California Peninsula. These markers will be useful to study familiar relationships and behaviour on the Cerralvo Island population.  相似文献

Seven microsatellite loci were developed for the Baja California endemic black‐tailed brush lizard Urosaurus nigricaudus, using an enriched genomic DNA library. All loci were polymorphic and overall presented high levels of variation. Number of alleles ranged from five to 16 (average 12.14), and observed heterozygosities from 0.535 to 0.923 (average 0.752). Cross‐species amplification was successful and polymorphism was detected for all the loci using the congeners Urosaurus lahtelai and Urosaurus ornatus. These markers will be useful to study fragmented populations of U. nigricaudus on agricultural landscape of the Baja California Peninsula.  相似文献

Nine polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated to investigate the effects of habitat fragmentation on gene flow and genetic variation of the peninsular kangaroo rat Dipodomys simulans peninsularis on agricultural landscape from the Baja California Peninsula. The markers had an average of 9.11 alleles per locus (range 2–14), with mean observed and expected heterozygosities 0.646 (range 0.333–0.900) and 0.788 (range 0.284–0.932), respectively. No evidence of linkage disequilibrium was found across pairs of loci, and only one locus exhibited evidence of null alleles.  相似文献

One hundred and thirty-seven new chromosome counts are reported from 104 populations of 26 native South American taxa of Hypochaeris (Asteraceae, Lactuceae), together with two invasive Mediterranean species: H. glabra and H. radicata . First reports are provided for seven taxa ( H. alba , H. cf. eremophila , H. caespitosa , H. hookeri , H. parodii , H. patagonica and H. pinnatifida ) and one new ploidy level is reported (diploid for H. incana , so far known only as a tetraploid). Including the results of this study, the chromosomes of 39 of the c . 50 Hypochaeris species known from the New World have now been counted. Most species are diploid with 2 n  = 2 x  = 8 and have bimodal, asymmetrical karyotypes. Tetraploidy (2 n  = 4 x  = 16) is reported here for the first time in H. caespitosa . Infra-specific polyploidy (probably autopolyploidy) is reported in H. incana and H. taraxacoides , both cases including infra-populational cytotype mixtures (2 x and 4 x ). Polyploidy is now known from eight South American Hypochaeris species ( c . 16%). Basic karyotype analyses allow the placement of the newly counted taxa into previously proposed but slightly modified groupings and provide the framework for further molecular cytogenetic analyses. The reported findings suggest that chromosomal change in South American Hypochaeris , in contrast to Old World species, has not involved aneuploidy, but polyploidy and/or more subtle changes in chromosome length, perhaps via satellite DNA amplification/deletion or activity of retroelements, and rDNA reorganization.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 153 , 49–60.  相似文献

Trends and temperature response in the phenology of crops in Germany   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10  
The phenology of 78 agricultural and horticultural events from a national survey in Germany spanning the years 1951–2004 is examined. The majority of events are significantly earlier now than 53 years ago, with a mean advance of 1.1–1.3 days per decade. The mean trends for 'true phases', such as emergence and flowering, of annual and perennial crops are not significantly different, although more trends (78% vs. 46%) are significant for annual crops. We attempt to remove the influence of technological advance or altered farming practices on phenology by detrending the respective time series by linear regression of date (day number) on year. Subsequently, we estimate responses to mean monthly and seasonal temperature by correlation and regression in two ways; with and without removing the year trend first. Nearly all (97%) correlation coefficients are negative, suggesting earlier events in warmer years. Between 82% and 94% of the coefficients with seasonal spring and summer temperatures are significant. The conservative estimate (detrended) of mean temperature response against mean March–May temperature (−3.73 days °C−1) is significantly less than the full estimate (−4.31 days °C−1), the 'true' size of phenological temperature response may lie in between. Perennial crops exhibited a significantly higher temperature response to mean spring temperature than the annual crops.  相似文献

The tuberous legume Pachyrhizus tuberosus is found in cultivation sporadically throughout the tropical lowlands of South America. As a result of field studies conducted in Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela, three distinct cultivar groups have been identified. Rare references presenting further evidence in support of this grouping, and yielding information on the cultivation history, are reviewed. The differences in morphology, agricultural practices, tuberous root quality and uses have been studied, as has the linguistic evidence of the origin and domestication processes. The herbarium and live material have been subjected to multivariate analyses in order to establish which easily observable phenotypic characters can be used in the identification of the three cultivar groups. This paper reports on the analysis of 23 morphological characteristics from 31 P. tuberosus cultivar records. The considerable potential of this cultivar/landrace complex and the possibilities of establishing in situ conservation initiatives are discussed.
