To investigate feeding‐related decisions in Aedes aegypti (L.), adults are presented with simple diets of paired gustatory stimuli conveying information concerning energy content, nutrient richness, osmotic balance and food toxicity in a two‐diet matrix assay. Assessment of mosquito gut contents indicates that both sexes accept single sugar diets in a dose‐dependent manner. When presented with a choice between two different yet equimolar sugar solutions, more individuals of both sexes accept the disaccharides, sucrose and trehalose, than the monosacharrides, fructose and glucose. The combination of pyranose and furanose sugars in solution, either physically associated (as in sucrose) or present as monomers (as glucose and fructose), is accepted over solutions containing a single sugar moiety. Using the two‐diet matrix assay, mosquito diet‐choice is also tested between two equimolar sucrose ‘driver’ solutions in which one is presented with various concentrations of another potential feeding cue ‘test’ compound (i.e. each of the 20 naturally‐occurring amino acids, sodium chloride, quinine or caffeine). Diet‐choice between the ‘driver’ sucrose‐only solution and the solution of the ‘driver’ sucrose containing a ‘test’ amino acid is influenced by sex, amino acid concentration and sucrose concentration. There is also an example of synergism between the diet components, leucine and sucrose. Mosquitoes demonstrate a dose‐dependent acceptance of sucrose‐only diets over sodium chloride‐containing sucrose when presented together. Interestingly, the sucrose‐only diet is accepted by more mosquitoes than all concentrations of the saline‐containing sucrose diets except those approximately isotonic to mosquito haemolymph, at which concentration mosquitoes show no clear choice between the diets. More individuals of both sexes accept sucrose‐only diets than the diets of caffeine‐containing sucrose in a dose‐dependent manner. Only females, however, respond to quinine‐containing sucrose diets and modulate this behaviour in relation to the energetic reward: more females imbibed quinine‐containing sucrose at the higher sucrose concentration (1 m ). A systematic characterization of diet selection behaviour of A. aegypti is presented for 27 putative feeding cues potentially involved in nectar/honeydew feeding. This study will be used as a basis from which to investigate further the mosquito's assessment of food quality and ultimately host choice.  相似文献

1. Effects of flow regulation on abundance and richness of net-spinning caddis larvae (Hydropsychoidea; Trichoptera) were examined in fifty-two North Swedish rivers. Models based on conditions at unregulated sites were used to predict densities at impacted sites and the residuals, i.e. the differences between observed and predicted numbers, were used as measures of the effects.
2. Two broad categories of impacted sites were identified. Sites with regulated but unreduced flow often have reduced seasonal flow variation and slightly enhanced short-term variation, while those with reduced flow usually have long periods of low and stable flow occasionally interrupted by short periods of violently fluctuating flow.
3. The abundance of net-spinning caddis larvae was significantly lower than predicted at both types of sites (reduction 30%), while richness was significantly reduced only at sites with reduced flow (reduction 20%).
4. A subsequent analysis of the relationship between the effects and variables altered by flow regulations, e.g. flow magnitude and flow variation, indicated that species richness was primarily affected by the occurrence of periods with zero flow, while negative effects of abundance were associated with high flow variability.
5. Significant negative effects on the abundance of individual taxa were observed for Cheumatopsyche lepida and Hydropsyche pellucidula at sites with regulated but unreduced flow.
6. Analyses of the relationships between the effects and regulation-related variables suggest that H. siltalai was significantly negatively affected by the occurrence of zero flow and that negative effects on Arctopsyche ladogensis were associated with flow reduction and high flow variability.  相似文献

1. Fish and ducks often belong to the same local food web, and several studies indicate that there is a general negative effect of fish on breeding ducks. This pattern has so far been addressed mainly within the framework of competition for common invertebrate prey, while predation by large fish as a force behind settlement and abundance patterns in ducks remains largely unknown. This is the first study to address the effect of fish predation on breeding ducks, isolated from that of competition, and the first experiment to explore the ability of ducks to identify and avoid lakes with high risk of fish predation. 2. We used a before–after control–impact design and 11 naturally fishless lakes. Waterfowl on the lakes were surveyed during the breeding season of 2005. Large adult pike (Esox lucius) were added to two lakes in early spring 2008, and waterfowl surveys were repeated on all 11 lakes. 3. Pike introduction did not affect the number of pairs on lakes during the nesting season in any of three focal duck species (mallard Anas platyrhynchos, teal Anas crecca, and goldeneye Bucephala clangula). During the brood‐rearing season, however, there was a decrease in duck days in teal and goldeneye in lakes with pike, with similar trends observed in mallard. The number of goldeneye ducklings was also significantly lower in lakes with pike. We were unable to determine whether the response was attributable to direct pike predation or to broods leaving experimental lakes, but in either case, our study demonstrates high fitness costs for ducks breeding on lakes with pike. 4. The apparent inability of nesting ducks to detect pike and the clear fitness implications may influence the annual recruitment of ducks on a larger scale as pike are both common and widespread. Vegetation complexity and food abundance are likely to be of overriding importance when breeding ducks are choosing a nesting site. As pike have a strong influence on breeding birds, relying on vegetation and cues of food abundance, while ignoring indicators of predation risk from fish, could lead to lakes with pike acting as an ecological trap.  相似文献

Abstract Mathematical models of interacting populations have a prominent position in population and community ecology, but are often criticized for not being testable. The authors reviewed tests of a particular model, the exploitation ecosystem hypothesis as it was formulated in Oksanen et al. (1981), in order to study problems that may be encountered when testing models. A general problem is how to determine if an experimental system should be regarded as within the model's theoretical domain or not. The theoretical domain defines the type of system the model is meant to apply to. It is noted that both liberal and strict domain definitions can be problematic. Most important is that a too liberal domain definition can result in false understanding (i.e. that it is falsely concluded that the processes included in the model are controlling the study system). Other problems encountered were more system‐specific. Equilibrium predictions were tested in experiments that were too short to reach steady state and in several studies ambiguous definitions and measurements of model variables were found such as productivity, biomass and the number trophic levels. It is concluded that a major obstacle when performing tests is the conceptual and methodological problems encountered when translating model abstractions into an empirical reality.  相似文献

1. The correlation between water chemistry, physical variables and fish community composition was examined in 40 small (≤30 ha) coastal lakes in northern Sweden. Twenty of the 40 lakes were isolated from other water bodies and 20 were connected to the Baltic Sea. Lakes were fished in summer, using three different methods. Water chemistry was sampled in late winter prior to ice‐out and pH was measured additionally in summer. 2. Our central question was whether water chemistry plays a greater role in the composition of fish communities in isolated lakes than in connected lakes, as isolated lakes cannot be recolonised once a species has become extinct. 3. Results indicate that winter anoxia affects community composition only in isolated lakes, whereas acidity is of importance in both connected and isolated lakes. Methane (indicating anoxia), was significantly correlated with variation in fish community composition in isolated lakes, and a group of variables that indicate anoxia (CH4, pCO2, inorganic carbon and dissolved oxygen) explained 24–34% of the variation. pH alone explained 12% of the variation in community composition for connected lakes and a group of variables indicating acidity (summer and winter pH and ANC) explained 10–20% of the variation in isolated lakes. Lake area was the most important physical variable, being significantly correlated with the variation in fish community composition in connected lakes. 4. In isolated lakes, the presence of pike (Esox lucius), perch (Perca fluviatilis) and roach (Rutilus rutilus) was associated with low CH4. The occurrence of crucian carp (Carassius carassius) and roach was positively correlated with pH, and the crucian carp was apparently also affected by predation by pike and perch. In connected lakes the effect of anoxia was low, probably due to the possibility of recolonisation and pockets of oxygenated water, allowing pike and perch to persist and thereby limiting the distribution of crucian carp.  相似文献

Variations in the morphology and physiology were noted when parts of the Peltigera aphthosa Willd. thallus differing in age were examined. The many small cephalodia on the growing apex of the lichen showed a lower heterocyst frequency (14%) than those on the rest of the thallus (21–22%), which was reflected in the nitrogenase activity. In contrast, highest levels of photosynthesis (14CO2 uptake and O2 evolution) were noted at the growing apex. while respiration rates were fairly stable over the thallus. The water-holding capacity was greatest in the midparts. Cephalodial biomass represented an average of 2.6% of total thallus biomass. while the number and size of these structures varied considerably. A minor part of the total carbon fixation (14CO2) and net oxygen evolution (O2 electrode) was performed by the blue-green phycobiont (Nostoc) in light. A rapid excretion of ammonia from isolated cephalodia was noticed, which together with a comparatively constant C:N ratio throughout the thallus indicated a rapid transport of metabolites facilitated by close physical contact (electron microscopy).  相似文献

The effect of different conditions of transfer (+;1 °C withwater, +20 °C with and without water) from the natural habitatand laboratory acclimation procedure (with and without bottomsediment) on the acid-base and electrolyte status of the freshwateruniomd mussel Anodonta anatina (L.) was studied. The shift inthe acid-base status of A. anatina during the transfer was smallerat 1°C than at 20°C. The pO2 content of the haemolymphdeclined significantly under all three transfer conditions.Neither the transfer nor the laboratory acclimation affectedhaemolymph [Na+]. However, during transfer at 1°C the haemolyraph[Ca2+] did not change, whereas [K+] increased up to three fold.Haemolymph [Ca2+] increased when mussels were transferred at20°C After a 17-day aquarium acclimation, the pO2 of all the musselskept in the sediment had returned to the field level and thetransfer seemed to have had no effect on the pCH of the haemolymph.Conversely, in the groups kept without sediment, the pO2 continuouslyremained above the field level. Whereas the [K+] of all themussels declined to the field level, the haemolymph [Ca2+] remainedelevated throughout the entire acclimation period of 17 days. SUMMARY. 1. Field experiments in a lake outlet stream were carried out on filter-feeding larvae of the caddisfly Hydropsyche siltalai Döhler, to assess whether microhabitat quality, establishment and growth rate is affected by position (upstream—downstream) within a dense aggregation of larvae.
2. Artificial substrates holding high-density aggregations of hydropsychid larvae were used. Marked III-instar H. siltalai larvae were implanted either in the upstream end or in the downstream end of an aggregation and recovered after 17 days.
3. Larvae recovered from the downstream end of an aggregation were smaller than those that had been implanted in the upstream end.
4. Fewer larvae had settled in the downstream end of aggregations compared to the exposed upstream part.
5. Naturally colonizing H. sitalai larvae were, in contrast to implanted larvae, more numerous behind aggregations. Small (first and second instar) Hydropsyche angustipennis (Curtis) and/or H. pellucidula (Curtis) larvae were more numerous in front of aggregations.
6. Current velocities, measured with a microcurrent velocity meter, and density of drifting prey, were significantly lower behind aggregations of hydropsychid larvae. Food availability decreased by about 50% behind aggregations.  相似文献
