Plant cell extension: structural implications for the origin of the plasma membrane

Abstract. The proposal that rapidly elongating plant cells cannot maintain plasma membrane synthesis by means of the normal endomembrane system has been examined in elongating segments of Avena sativa coleoptiles. Segments were sampled and fixed for electron microscopy, before and after elongation on auxin solutions. Mean cell extensions, cytoplasmic volumes, dictyosomc numbers, and vesicle sizes and numbers were determined. It was shown that there are sufficient dictyosomes present to sustain the vesicle production necessary for the observed plasma membrane extension.     

Development of six microsatellite loci for black mangrove (Avicennia germinans)

We developed six new microsatellite loci for the black mangrove (Avicennia germinans), an important member of wetland communities worldwide. Loci showed moderate to high polymorphism and a survey of four locations [Puerto Rico (Jobos Bay and Luquillo), Mexico, French Guyana] revealed clear regional (and local) population structure. All populations were genetically distinct and the two continental populations showed much higher diversity than the two insular Puerto Rican locations. These loci complement those recently published by Nettel et al. (2005 ) and promise to be valuable for characterizing local and regional population dynamics in the black mangrove.     

NEST BUILDING AND NESTING BEHAVIOUR OF THE SOCIABLE WEAVER PHILETAIRUS SOCIUS

The behaviour of the Sociable Weaver Philetairus socius was studied briefly in South Africa in 1969, and more extensively in aviaries in southern California for over three years (1972-75). The species was bred successfully in captivity, apparently for the first time. Building of the compound nest in nature is reviewed in the light of preceding accounts, both by ourselves and by others. The optimal preference for nest materials was experimentally determined. Male and female appear identical and there seems to have been no previous detailed account of the behaviour of Sociable Weavers based on distinctively colour-ringed individuals of known sex. Among the sex differences in behaviour are the amount and nature of building, dominance, malespecific song, and sex differences in relative share of incubation and in the care of nestlings and fledglings. In addition, we describe in detail for the first time certain rarely observed behavioural acts including precopulatory courtship and copulation. Allopreening and water bathing are very rare in this species, and the birds do not take dust baths.
