THE data of Inoue and Iida1,2 strongly suggest that bacteriophage is involved in the toxigenicity of Clostridium botulinum types C and D. They were able to recover toxigenic isolates from nontoxigenic cultures incubated in broth containing filtrates of the toxigenic strains (Stockholm strain of type C and strain 1873 of type D). Lysis was observed in the cultures, but plaques were not demonstrated on solid medium. The change from hontoxigenicity to toxigenicity in C. botulinum type C strain 468C has been shown3 to require the active and continued participation of a specific bacteriophage designated CEβ.  相似文献

Effects of indoleacetic acid, calcium ions and ethylene on thegrowth of and deposition of different cell wall fractions inthe hypocotyl of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) seedlingswere investigated. Indoleacetic acid progressively stimulated cellulose depositionas the amount of added Ca2+ increased. In contrast, indoleaceticacid promoted lignification and the deposition of non-cellulosicpolysaccharides only in the absence of added Ca2+ . When Ca2+was added, the indoleacetic acid effect disappeared. Similarly, indoleacetic acid promoted non-cellulosic polysaccharide depositiononly in the absence of ethylene. At increasing ethylene levelsthe effect of indoleacetic acid on non-cellulosic polysaccharidedeposition disappeared and indoleacetic acid instead promotedcellulose deposition. The response to indoleacetic acid depended on the Ca2+ concentrationand on the rate of ethylene production. The relationship betweenindoleacetic acid and Ca2+ seemed complex, but clearly indoleaceticacid could partially overcome a Ca2+ deficiency. The resultssuggest that ethylene may be a factor of particular importancefor the type of polysaccharide deposition during cell wall formation. Although loss of genetic variation is frequently assumed to be associated with loss of adaptive potential, only few studies have examined adaptation in populations with little genetic variation. On the Swedish west coast, the northern fringe populations of the natterjack toad Bufo calamita inhabit an atypical habitat consisting of offshore rock islands. There are strong among‐population differences in the amount of neutral genetic variation, making this system suitable for studies on mechanisms of trait divergence along a gradient of within‐population genetic variation. In this study, we examined the mechanisms of population divergence using QST–FST comparisons and correlations between quantitative and neutral genetic variation. Our results suggest drift or weak stabilizing selection across the six populations included in this study, as indicated by low QSTFST values, lack of significant population × temperature interactions and lack of significant differences among the islands in breeding pond size. The six populations included in this study differed in both neutral and quantitative genetic variation. Also, the correlations between neutral and quantitative genetic variation tended to be positive, however, the relatively small number of populations prevents any strong conclusions based on these correlations. Contrary to the majority of QST–FST comparisons, our results suggest drift or weak stabilizing selection across the examined populations. Furthermore, the low heritability of fitness‐related traits may limit evolutionary responses in some of the populations.  相似文献

Cuttings of 6-week-old Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.)seedlings were placed in liquid media containing various concentrationsof Ca2+. Cytoplasmic concentrations of Ca2+ were manipulatedusing the ionophore A 23 187. The effects of Ca2+ concentrationson the deposition of total cell wall material as well as onthe deposition of cellulose, lignin, and non-cellulosic polysaccharidesin the hypocotyls were investigated. At low concentrations ofCa2+ wall deposition was reduced, mainly as a result of theinhibition of lignin and non-cellulosic polysaccharide deposition.High concentrations of Ca2+ stimulated non-cellulosic polysaccharideand lignin deposition, whereas cellulose deposition was almosttotally inhibited. Three new taxa with clear affinity to extant Lauraceae are described from the Santonian/ Campanian ( c .83 My, Late Cretaceous) Neuse River locality in North Carolina, U.S.A. A new lauraceous genus, Neusenia , is established to accommodate an excellently preserved flower with tetrasporangiate anthers and psilate pollen grains. Two additional lauraceous taxa are described but not named due to incomplete preservation. The fossil taxa described in this paper represent a variety of evolutionary lineages within Lauraceae with respect to inflorescence structure and anther morphology, including both distinctly pedicellate flowers and sessile, closely crowded flowers, as well as tetrasporangiate and disporangiate anthers. In light of the co-occurrence of both tetrasporangiate and disporangiate anthers in the Neuse River flora, the plesiomorphic state of lauraceous anthers is discussed. Mapped on a recent cladogram of Laurales, tetrasporangiate anthers appear to be primitive within Lauraceae. Thus, disporangiate 2-valvate anthers must have evolved independently at least three times in Laurales (in Lauraceae, Hernandiaceae, and Atherosperrnataceae/Gomortegaceae). In Hernandiaceae and Atherosperrnataceae/Gomortegaceae such anthers are interpreted to have originated from tetrasporangiate 2-valvate anthers through reduction of the septum in each theca, while in Lauraceae they may have originated in the same way and/or from reduction of two pollen sacs in a tetrasporangiate 4-valvate anther.  相似文献

The potential to adapt to novel environmental conditions is a key area of interest for evolutionary biology. However, the role of multiple selection pressures on adaptive responses has rarely been investigated in natural populations. In Sweden, the natterjack toad Bufo calamita inhabits two separate distribution areas, one in southernmost Sweden and one on the west coast. We characterized the larval habitat in terms of pond size and salinity in the two areas, and found that the western populations are more affected by both desiccation risk and pond salinity than the southern populations. In a common garden experiment manipulating salinity and temperature, we found that toads from the west coast populations were locally adapted to shorter pond duration as indicated by their higher development and growth rates. However, despite being subjected to higher salinity stress in nature, west coast toads had a poorer performance in saline treatments. We found that survival in the saline treatments in the west coast populations was positively affected by larger body mass and longer larval period. Furthermore, we found negative genetic correlations between body mass and growth rate and their plastic responses to salinity. These results implicate that the occurrence of multiple environmental stressors needs to be accounted for when assessing the adaptive potential of organisms and suggest that genetic correlations may play a role in constraining adaptation of natural populations.  相似文献

We examined the relationship between breeding success and juvenile sex ratio in two gamebirds with differing degrees of sexual size dimorphism. We used breeding success as an indicator of the level of environmental stress the birds had experienced. Capercaillie Tetrao urogallus and Black Grouse T. tetrix wing samples were collected from hunters in northern Sweden during 1977-86. In both species, annual juvenile sex ratio (percentage of males) increased with annual breeding success, i.e. with reduced environmental stress. We attribute this to the higher energy requirements during growth, vulnerability to environmental stress, and mortality of juvenile males compared with females, especially under adverse conditions. Moreover, the relationship between breeding success and juvenile sex ratio was stronger in Capercaillie than in Black Grouse. This reflects the higher degree of sexual size dimorphism in Capercaillie, and consequent larger mortality difference between juvenile males and females.  相似文献
