ABSTRACT. The surfaces of massive corals of the genus Favia from Eilat, Red Sea, and from Heron Island, Great Barrier Reef, are covered by a layer of eukaryotic microorganisms. These microorganisms are embedded in the coral mucus and tissue. In the Gulf of Eilat, the prevalence of corals covered by patches of eukaryotic microorganisms was positively correlated with a decrease in water temperatures (from 25–28 °C in the summer to 20–23 °C in winter). Comparisons carried out using transmission and scanning electron microscopy showed morphological similarities between the microorganisms from the two geographically distant reefs. The microorganisms found on and in the tissues were approximately 5–15 μm in diameter, surrounded by scales in their cell wall, contained a nucleus, and included unique auto‐florescent coccoid bodies of approximately 1 μm. Such morphological characters suggested that these microorganisms are stramenopile protists and in particular thraustochytrids. Molecular analysis, carried out using specific primers for stramenopile 18S rRNA genes, revealed that 90% (111/123) of the clones in the gene libraries were from the Thraustochytriidae. The dominant genera in this family were Aplanochytrium sp., Thraustochytrium sp., and Labyrinthuloides sp. Ten stramenopile strains were isolated and cultured from the corals. Some strains showed ≥97% similarity to clones derived from libraries of mucus‐associated microorganisms retrieved directly from these corals. Fatty acid characterization of one of the prevalent strains revealed a high percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids, including omega‐3. The possible association of these stramenopiles in the coral holobiont appeared to be a positive one.  相似文献

The volume of the floret cavity at different floret positionsalong the spike and within a single spikelet was estimated in10 Triticum aestivum and three T. durum lines by injecting floretcavities with liquid silicone rubber which solidified thereafter.Highly significant correlation coefficients, ranging from 0.40to 0.76 were found between floret volume and grain weight; inmost lines the basal florets had a higher correlation than theterminal ones. The relationships between floret volume and grainweight were characterized by an intercept of about 30–60per cent of the mean grain weight (heavy-grained lines havinga larger intercept) and a slope of about 1 mg µI–1.Differences in grain size and shape, both within spike as wellas among lines, closely reflected the variation in the sizeof floret cavity. The data support the hypothesis that grainweight is partly determined by the volume of the floret cavity. Grain weight, grain volume, floret cavity  相似文献

VARIOUS types of cells release an inducer for the formation of colonies in vitro with mature differentiated macrophages and granulocytes from single normal undifferentiated haematopoietic cells1–8. Using purified inducer from a cloned line of mouse fibroblasts, we have shown that this induction requires a protein (MGI) with a molecular weight of 65–70,000 and a low molecular weight co-factor, both secreted by the fibroblasts9. Adenine or adenine-containing nucleotides can substitute for the co-factor9,10. We have also shown that non-purified conditioned medium produced by human cells can induce undifferentiated cells from patients with acute myeloid leukaemia to differentiate into mature granulocytes11.  相似文献

The effects on grain weight of removing spikelet and floralorgans, other manipulations of the florets or spikelets andcovering intact or treated spikes to reduce the amount of lightwere tested. Removal of organs which exposed the developing grain to increasedlight intensity resulted in a reduction in grain size. The restrictionin grain growth was already apparent 2 weeks after anthesisand was accompanied by a more compact pericarp. Covering thetreated spikes with opaque bags resulted in normal pericarpstructure and restoration of grain weight. Only a small portionof the restoration effect could be attributed to the increaseof humidity under the covers. Treatments which exerted physical constraint on the developinggrain reduced its size and affected its shape. The size of thefloret cavity and the transmission of light through floral bractsare shown to be two of the factors controlling grain growth. Previous research implies that competitive character displacement in felids and mustelids of Israel is expressed by canine size. Anatomy and observed killing behaviour of canids suggest that canines in this group are less adapted for the stylized role they play in felids and mustelids. Thus we hypothesized that character displacement, if it exists in canids, should not be manifested more clearly by canine size than by other traits. Five sympatric and at least partially syntopic canids occupy Israel, while in North Africa the largest (wolf) and smallest (Blanford's fox) are absent. Sexual size dimorphism in Israeli canids is generally less than in felids and mustelids (in which we analysed each sex as a separate ‘morphospecies’), so we used mixed-sex samples to represent each species. The three largest species (wolf, golden jackal and red fox) are also represented by Middle Palaeolithic samples in Israel, and all three had larger carnassial lengths then. Carnassial lengths, canine diameters and skull lengths are all remarkable evenly spaced among the five recent species in Israel. In Egypt, no trait manifests significant equality. Despite regional fluctuations in size, the carnassial length ratios of the three smaller species (foxes) are strikingly constant (1.18–1.21) throughout the region, while the ratios for the three larger species (wolf, jackal and red fox), sympatric only in Israel, are larger (1.33–1.34). Finally, mean carnassial length of jackals is constant across North Africa, while skull length and canine diameter both increase from Algeria through Egypt. All three traits are larger in Egypt than in Israel. We tentatively ascribe the equal ratios in Israel to competitive character displacement, though this hypothesis is speculative because of numerous lacunae in knowledge of diet, killing behaviour, available resources and extent of food limitation. Furthermore, humans have greatly affected range, density and ecology of wolves and jackals in the last century. Larger sizes in the Palaeolithic may well be manifestations of Bergmann's rule. The constancy of carnassial length in North African jackals, notwithstanding a longitudinal cline in CBLs of these populations, and the constant ratio between jackal and red fox carnassial length are both consistent with a hypothesis of character release in the absence of the wolf.  相似文献
