In lek-mating systems, males aggregate at display arenas andfemales visit solely for the purpose of mating. This breedingsystem is characterized by high variance in male mating successwith one male often receiving most copulations. High reproductiveskew among males has led to question why males join leks whentheir chances of reproductive success are so low. Kin selectionhas been invoked as a mechanism to explain the evolution oflekking behavior, whereby nonreproducing but genetically relatedmales gain indirect inclusive-fitness benefits. Evidence forkin selection among lek-mating birds is, however, mixed. Here,we show that kin selection is unlikely to be an important explanationfor evolution of lekking behavior in manakins (Aves: Pipridae). We found that for 4 species chosen from several major cladeswithin Pipridae, males within leks were not significantly morerelated than expected from random assortment of males in thepopulation. This means that nonreproducing males do not gainindirect inclusive-fitness benefits by joining leks. This resultsuggests alternative mechanisms must be invoked to explain theevolution of lek-mating systems in manakins.  相似文献

The Venezuelan Creole breed cow has shown great versatility in adapting to extreme tropical conditions, but unfortunately it has exhibited low fertility. In a previous study conducted at the Experimental Station Guárico in Calabozo, Venezuela, chromosomal analysis of 30 Creole bulls demonstrated the presence of Robertsonian translocation 1/29 (Rb 1/29) in 16.6% of the animals. Considering this finding, we sought to establish the incidence of Rb 1/29 in Creole cows. Thus, heparinized peripheral blood cells were cultured rendering metaphase spreads and were subsequently stained by Giemsa and G-banding techniques. The chromosomal diagnosis was performed in 2 groups of cows (21 pure Creole and 47 hybrids Creole x Brahman). The results confirmed the presence of Rb 1/29 in females as had already been demonstrated in bulls. In the first group of cows the incidence of Rb 1/29 was 4.8%; in the second it was 8.5%. The implication of this finding is discussed here.  相似文献

Tumor expression of the lymphangiogenic factor VEGF-C is correlated with metastasis and poor prognosis, and although VEGF-C enhances transport to the draining lymph node (dLN) and antigen exposure to the adaptive immune system, its role in tumor immunity remains unexplored. Here, we demonstrate that VEGF-C promotes immune tolerance in murine melanoma. In B16 F10 melanomas expressing a foreign antigen (OVA), VEGF-C protected tumors against preexisting antitumor immunity and promoted local deletion of OVA-specific CD8(+) T cells. Naive OVA-specific CD8(+) T cells, transferred into tumor-bearing mice, were dysfunctionally activated and apoptotic. Lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) in dLNs cross-presented OVA, and naive LECs scavenge and cross-present OVA in vitro. Cross-presenting LECs drove the proliferation and apoptosis of OVA-specific CD8(+) T cells ex vivo. Our findings introduce a tumor-promoting role for lymphatics in the tumor and dLN and suggest that lymphatic endothelium in the local microenvironment may be a target for immunomodulation.  相似文献

Leks offer an intriguing evolutionary problem: why do malesaggregate when this apparently leads to fitness costs? Aggregationcosts can be balanced if males settle on patches where theyare more likely to encounter females (hot-spot hypothesis). We evaluated whether female hot spots can account for patternsof lek structure in the blue-crowned manakin (Lepidothrix coronata)by modeling female distribution patterns relative to lek locationsin two 100-ha plots. Individual females were mapped based onnest locations and capture points and had their home ranges(HRs) modeled based on radiotelemetry data. The number of femalesthat lekking males can be expected to encounter was estimatedas the number of individual female HRs overlapping each maleterritory; hot spots were defined as patches where more femalesare found than average. We investigated how changes in femaleHR size and devaluation effects (decrease in female availabilitydue to the presence of neighboring males) influence male accessto females. Both factors strongly influenced the expected ratesof female encounter, but the hot-spot hypothesis was not supported:most male territories consistently overlapped fewer or justas many female HRs as expected by chance. Leks were not closerto hot spots than similar-sized nonlek sites. A proportion ofmales were, indeed, settled at hot spots, but, contrary to predictionsof the hot-spot hypothesis, they belonged to smaller leks thanmales located outside hot spots. Our results indicate that thislack of spatial correlation between males and females resultspartly from differences in sex-specific habitat preferences.  相似文献
