- Assemblages of insect herbivores are structured by plant traits such as nutrient content, secondary metabolites, physical traits, and phenology. Many of these traits are phylogenetically conserved, implying a decrease in trait similarity with increasing phylogenetic distance of the host plant taxa. Thus, a metric of phylogenetic distances and relationships can be considered a proxy for phylogenetically conserved plant traits and used to predict variation in herbivorous insect assemblages among co‐occurring plant species.
- Using a Holarctic dataset of exposed‐feeding and shelter‐building caterpillars, we aimed at showing how phylogenetic relationships among host plants explain compositional changes and characteristics of herbivore assemblages.
- Our plant–caterpillar network data derived from plot‐based samplings at three different continents included >28,000 individual caterpillar–plant interactions. We tested whether increasing phylogenetic distance of the host plants leads to a decrease in caterpillar assemblage overlap. We further investigated to what degree phylogenetic isolation of a host tree species within the local community explains abundance, density, richness, and mean specialization of its associated caterpillar assemblage.
- The overlap of caterpillar assemblages decreased with increasing phylogenetic distance among the host tree species. Phylogenetic isolation of a host plant within the local plant community was correlated with lower richness and mean specialization of the associated caterpillar assemblages. Phylogenetic isolation had no effect on caterpillar abundance or density. The effects of plant phylogeny were consistent across exposed‐feeding and shelter‐building caterpillars.
- Our study reveals that distance metrics obtained from host plant phylogeny are useful predictors to explain compositional turnover among hosts and host‐specific variations in richness and mean specialization of associated insect herbivore assemblages in temperate broadleaf forests. As phylogenetic information of plant communities is becoming increasingly available, further large‐scale studies are needed to investigate to what degree plant phylogeny structures herbivore assemblages in other biomes and ecosystems.

The possibility of obtaining low-molecular-weight heparins using a chitinolytic enzymatic complex immobilized on Silochrom has been demonstrated. The optimal conditions of this process (sodium acetate buffer, pH 7.0–7.5; temperature, 40–45°C; and duration of hydrolysis, 3 h) were determined. Depending on the ratio between heparin and the immobilized enzymatic complex, samples with molecular weights varying from 1.7 to 4.7 kDa, were obtained. Emetic and antiemetic properties of opioid peptides, substance "P", beta-lipotropin, and ACTH1-39 have been investigated in experiments on cats. It was shown that morphine, enkephalin, beta-endorphin and DADLE caused vomiting in animals, which was blocked by naloxone. Substance "P", gamma- and des-tyr-gamma-endorphin manifested antiemetic properties similar to those of naloxone. Selective antagonists of delta-opioid receptors ICI 154, 129 blocked emetic action of delta-agonist DADLE but did not prevent vomiting caused by mu-agonist morphine. It is suggested that the vomiting mechanisms of endogenous opioid peptides involve stimulation of mu- and delta-opioid receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone of the vomiting centre. 相似文献

Microbial adhesion to hydrocarbons and microelectrophoresis were investigated in order to characterize the surface properties of Cryptosporidium parvum. Oocysts exhibited low removal rates by octane (only 20% on average), suggesting that the Cryptosporidium sp. does not demonstrate marked hydrophobic properties. A zeta potential close to -25 mV at pH 6 to 6.5 in deionized water was observed for the parasite. Measurements of hydrophobicity and zeta potential were performed as a function of pH and ionic strength or conductivity. Hydrophobicity maxima were observed at extreme pH values, with 40% of adhesion of oocysts to octane. It also appeared that ionic strength (estimated by conductivity) could influence the hydrophobic properties of oocysts. Cryptosporidium oocysts showed a pH-dependent surface charge, with zeta potentials becoming less negative as pH was reduced, starting at -35 mV for alkaline pH and reaching 0 at isoelectric points for pH 2.5. On the other hand, variation of surface charge with respect to conductivity of the suspension tested in this work was quite small. The knowledge of hydrophobic properties and surface charge of the parasite provides information useful in, for example, the choice of various flocculation treatments, membrane filters, and cleaning agents in connection with oocyst recovery. 相似文献

The relationship between chain composition and the efficiency of respiration-linked proton translocation was studied in nine bacterial species of widely differing taxonomic and ecological status. 2. All the bacteria investigated contained respiratory chain dehydrogenases, ubiquinone and/or menaquinone, cytochrome b and cytochrome oxidase aa3 and/or o. In addition, some of these organisms also contained pyridine nucleotide transhydrogenase and/or cytochrome c. 3. leads to H+/O ratios of whole cell suspensions oxidising endogenous substrates were in the approximate range 4-8 mol H+ translocated per g-atom oxygen consumed. It was concluded from the observed leads to H+/O ratios of cells loaded with specific substrates that proton-translocating loops 1 and 2 were present in all of the organisms investigated, but that loops 0 and 3 were dependent upon the presence of pyridine nucleotide transhydrogenase and cytochrome c respectively. 4. Six DNA fragments of interphase chromosomes isolated from nuclear envelopes of murine hepatocytes were cloned and sequenced. Analysis of their structural-functional organization suggests that these fragments are highly specified protein-nonencoding fractions of a eukaryotic genome. In the evolutionary process, they appear already in archaebacteria and may be "ancestral" for DNA sequences involved in structuring chromosomal domains (rosette-like structures) of tissue-specific genes. In their composition, these fragments have nucleotide sequences homologous to the repeats of the SINE and LINE families and to the satellite DNA of murine centromeres. 相似文献

One of the major health consequences of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident in 1986 was a dramatic increase in incidence of thyroid cancer among those who were aged less than 18 years at the time of the accident. This increase has been directly linked in several analytic epidemiological studies to iodine-131 (131I) thyroid doses received from the accident. However, there remains limited understanding of factors that modify the 131I-related risk. Focusing on post-Chernobyl pediatric thyroid cancer in Belarus, we reviewed evidence of the effects of radiation, thyroid screening, and iodine deficiency on regional differences in incidence rates of thyroid cancer. We also reviewed current evidence on content of nitrate in groundwater and thyroid cancer risk drawing attention to high levels of nitrates in open well water in several contaminated regions of Belarus, i.e. Gomel and Brest, related to the usage of nitrogen fertilizers. In this hypothesis generating study, based on ecological data and biological plausibility, we suggest that nitrate pollution may modify the radiation-related risk of thyroid cancer contributing to regional differences in rates of pediatric thyroid cancer in Belarus. Analytic epidemiological studies designed to evaluate joint effect of nitrate content in groundwater and radiation present a promising avenue of research and may provide useful insights into etiology of thyroid cancer. 相似文献
