In marine ecosystems, macroalgae are the habitat for several microorganisms, fungi being among them. In the Antarctic benthic coastal ecosystem, macroalgae play a key role in organic matter cycling. In this study, 13 different macroalgae from Potter Cove and surrounding areas were sampled and 48 fungal isolates were obtained from six species, four Rhodophyta Ballia callitricha, Gigartina skottsbergii, Neuroglossum delesseriae and Palmaria decipiens, and two Phaeophyceae: Adenocystis utricularis and Ascoseira mirabilis. Fungal isolates mostly belonged to the Ascomycota phylum (Antarctomyces, Cadophora, Cladosporium, Penicillium, Phialocephala, and Pseudogymnoascus) and only one to the phylum Mucoromycota. Two of the isolates could not be identified to genus level, implying that Antarctica is a source of probable novel fungal taxa with enormous bioprospecting and biotechnological potential. 73% of the fungal isolates were moderate eurypsychrophilic (they grew at 5–25 °C), 12.5% were eurypsychrophilic and grew in the whole range, 12.5% of the isolates were narrow eurypsychrophilic (growth at 15–25 °C), and Mucoromycota AUe4 was classified as stenopsychrophilic as it grew at 5–15 °C. Organic extracts of seven macroalgae from which no fungal growth was obtained (three red algae Georgiella confluens, Gymnogongrus turquetii, Plocamium cartlagineum, and four brown algae Desmarestia anceps, D. Antarctica, Desmarestia menziesii, Himantothallus grandifolius) were tested against representative fungi of the genera isolated in this work. All extracts presented fungal inhibition, those from Plocamium cartilagineum and G. turquetii showed the best results, and for most of these macroalgae, this represents the first report of antifungal activity and constitute a promising source of compounds for future evaluation. 相似文献

Upon the rare occasions that wild toque macaques (Macaca sinica) discover a large quantity of food in their natural forest environment they give distinctive calls. The durations of feeding bouts and the rates of feeding are significantly greater at sites where food calls are given than at sites of the same food types where no foods call are given. The calls designate a new location of a large quantity of any one of several food types. Dispersed group members hearing the call immediately run to the site of the call and feed there. I conclude that food calls are semantic signals (or symbols) that evoke the same response (rapid direct approach) as seeing the external referent of the calls (a source of abundant food) itself would. Food calls convey information about the presence of an edible food source, its quantity and location in the environment. As a general type, food calls appear to be related to, but are distinct from, contact calls which function to mintain group cohesion. 相似文献

Helminth parasites were identified in a natural population of primates at Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka. Five fatally wounded or
recently deceased toque macaques (Macaca sinica) and three langurs (Presbytis senex andP. entellus) were autopsied. The following nematodes were found:Oesophagostomum aculeatum (Chabertiidae),Streptopharagus pigmentata (Spirocercidae),Physaloptera sp. (Spiruridae),Enterobius vermicularis (Oxyuridae), andTrichuris trichiura (Trichuridae). One cestode,Hymenolepis was also recovered fromP. entellus. Among fresh faecal samples of 210M. sinica, worm eggs ofOesophagostomum andStrongyloides were most abundant, followed byTrichostrongylus. Trichuris andStreptopharagus eggs were found occasionally. 相似文献

Nucleotide sequence comparisons were used to investigate the evolution of P
transposable elements and the possibility that horizontal transfer has
played a role in their occurrence in natural populations of Drosophila and
other Diptera. The phylogeny of P elements was examined using published
sequences from eight dipteran taxa and a new, partial sequence from
Scaptomyza elmoi. The results from a number of different analyses are
highly consistent and reveal a P-element phylogeny that contradicts the
phylogeny of the species. At least three instances of horizontal transfer
are necessary to explain this incongruence, but other explanations cannot
be ruled out at this time.

Salmonella genomic island 1 (SGI1) contains a multidrug resistance region conferring the ampicillin-chloramphenicol-streptomycin-sulfamethoxazole-tetracycline resistance phenotype encoded by bla(PSE-1), floR, aadA2, sul1, and tet(G). Its increasing spread via interbacterial transfer and the emergence of new variants are important public health concerns. We investigated the molecular properties of SGI1-carrying Salmonella enterica serovars selected from a European strain collection. A total of 38 strains belonging to S. enterica serovar Agona, S. enterica serovar Albany, S. enterica serovar Derby, S. enterica serovar Kentucky, S. enterica serovar Newport, S. enterica serovar Paratyphi B dT+, and S. enterica serovar Typhimurium, isolated between 2002 and 2006 in eight European countries from humans, animals, and food, were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing, molecular typing methods (XbaI pulsed-field gel electrophoresis [PFGE], plasmid analysis, and multilocus variable-number tandem-repeat analysis [MLVA]), as well as detection of resistance and virulence determinants (PCR/sequencing and DNA microarray analysis). Typing experiments revealed wide heterogeneity inside the strain collection and even within serovars. PFGE analysis distinguished a total of 26 different patterns. In contrast, the characterization of the phenotypic and genotypic antimicrobial resistance revealed serovar-specific features. Apart from the classical SGI1 organization found in 61% of the strains, seven different variants were identified with antimicrobial resistance properties associated with SGI1-A (S. Derby), SGI1-C (S. Derby), SGI1-F (S. Albany), SGI1-L (S. Newport), SGI1-K (S. Kentucky), SGI1-M (S. Typhimurium), and, eventually, a novel variant similar to SGI1-C with additional gentamicin resistance encoded by aadB. Only minor serovar-specific differences among virulence patterns were detected. In conclusion, the SGI1 carriers exhibited pathogenetic backgrounds comparable to the ones published for susceptible isolates. However, because of their multidrug resistance, they may be more relevant in clinical settings. 相似文献

Fatty acids in milk reflect the interplay between species-specific physiological mechanisms and maternal diet. Anthropoid primates (apes, Old and New World monkeys) vary in patterns of growth and development and dietary strategies. Milk fatty acid profiles also are predicted to vary widely. This study investigates milk fatty acid composition of five wild anthropoids (Alouatta palliata, Callithrix jacchus, Gorilla beringei beringei, Leontopithecus rosalia, Macaca sinica) to test the null hypothesis of a generalized anthropoid milk fatty acid composition. Milk from New and Old World monkeys had significantly more 8:0 and 10:0 than milk from apes. The leaf eating species G. b. beringei and A. paliatta had a significantly higher proportion of milk 18:3n-3, a fatty acid found primarily in plant lipids. Mean percent composition of 22:6n-3 was significantly different among monkeys and apes, but was similar to the lowest reported values for human milk. Mountain gorillas were unique among anthropoids in the high proportion of milk 20:4n-6. This seems to be unrelated to requirements of a larger brain and may instead reflect species-specific metabolic processes or an unknown source of this fatty acid in the mountain gorilla diet. 相似文献

Toque macaques (Macaca sinica),inhabiting natural forest at Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka, are frequently injured in fights with conspecifics. The behavior of known
individuals when they were injured was compared to that after they had recovered their health. Thus, injured animals rested
and alloand autogroomed more, but they foraged less and initiated fewer aggressive episodes. They spent most time being sedentary
in the safety of arboreal refuges and reduced acrobatic movements by locomoting more often terrestrially. Other group members
showed no special tolerance (or altruism) toward injury victims during the costly and highly competitive activity of foraging
for food. In fact, some injured animals received more aggression, or lost dominance rank, and thereby had their competitive
abilities further impaired. Care for the injured was manifest mostly by grooming and wound cleaning. All hair in the area
surrounding a wound, as well as dirt, scabs, and fly larvae, were removed, and saliva was applied by licking the wound (wounds
so treated healed with no obvious signs of infection). (1) Injured macaques sought and received significantly more grooming
(owing to wound care); (2) the amount so received increased with the severity of the injury; and (3) the initiative of other
group members often compensated for a victim’s inability to solicit care. Juvenile males were especially attentive to injured
adult males, suggesting that they were investing in a social bond with these adults, which might reciprocate altruism toward
their juvenile caregivers in the future. Injured juvenile females received most care from their mothers. 相似文献

Most toque macaques give birth to their infants during the night when resting arboreally. Here we report on a birth that occurred
in daytime (at 0916 hr) and on the ground. The mother was 7.6 years old; the birth was her second. Prepartum behaviors included
lordosis, arching of the back, stretching, squatting, rolling on the ground, and anogenital self-examination. During the birth
the female was isolated about 100 m from the rest of her group. The mother stood bipedally during parturition and assisted
delivery with her hands. The infant was born within 2 min after first appearing at the vulva. It immediately clung to the
mother’s leg and vocalized. The mother licked the infant and oriented it toward her ventrum. She resumed foraging behavior
within 20 min after parturition. The infant nursed for the first time 2.25 hr after being born. The mother ate part of the
placenta, but the alpha female of the group usurped and also ate a portion of it. Curious group members sniffed and looked
at the infant but did not touch it. 相似文献

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in wild toque macaques (Macaca sinica) at Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka
From a natural population that inhabits the dry evergreen forest at Polonnaruwa, serum samples of 170 toque macaques were examined for antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii by the modified agglutination test. Of these, 21 (12%) were found with titers of 1:16 in 9, 1:32 in 9, 1:256 in 1, 1:1,024 in 1, and 1:4,096 in 1. There was no evidence of maternal transmission of antibodies or congenital toxoplasmosis. None of the infected macaques died within 1 yr after sampling. Toxoplasma gondii infection was closely linked to human environments where domestic cats were common. Macaques having frequent contact with human settlements showed a significantly greater (P < 0.0001) prevalence (19% infected) than macaques restricted to forest habitat, none of which was infected. Although infection with T. gondii has been noted in several species of Asian primates, this is the first report of T. gondii antibodies in toque macaques (Macaca sinica) that are endemic to the island of Sri Lanka. 相似文献
