Bench testing is a useful method to characterize the response of different automatic positive airway pressure (APAP) devices under well-controlled conditions. However, previous models did not consider the diversity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients’ characteristics and phenotypes. The objective of this proof-of-concept study was to design a new bench test for realistically simulating an OSA patient’s night, and to implement a one-night example of a typical female phenotype for comparing responses to several currently-available APAP devices. We developed a novel approach aimed at replicating a typical night of sleep which includes different disturbed breathing events, disease severities, sleep/wake phases, body postures and respiratory artefacts. The simulated female OSA patient example that we implemented included periods of wake, light sleep and deep sleep with positional changes and was connected to ten different APAP devices. Flow and pressure readings were recorded; each device was tested twice. The new approach for simulating female OSA patients effectively combined a wide variety of disturbed breathing patterns to mimic the response of a predefined patient type. There were marked differences in response between devices; only three were able to overcome flow limitation to normalize breathing, and only five devices were associated with a residual apnea-hypopnea index of <5/h. In conclusion, bench tests can be designed to simulate specific patient characteristics, and typical stages of sleep, body position, and wake. Each APAP device behaved differently when exposed to this controlled model of a female OSA patient, and should lead to further understanding of OSA treatment. 相似文献

Two statistics are proposed for testing the hypothesis of equality of the means of a bivariate normal distribution with unknown common variance and correlation coefficient when observations are missing on both variates. One of the statistics reduces to the one proposed by Bhoj (1978, 1984) when the unpaired observations on the variates are equal. The distributions of the statistics are approximated by well known distributions under the null hypothesis. The empirical powers of the tests are computed and compared with those of some known statistics. The comparison supports the use of one of the statistics proposed in this paper. 相似文献

Different submodels within complex model packages on N regimes-for plant N-uptake, net N-mineralization, nitrate leaching and microbial N immobilization-are critically reviewed mainly with regard to their prediction ability on the basis of three comparative papers. Only for some of the processes adequate statistical evaluation of the models was possible. Compared to the other statistically evaluable process, nitrate leaching, modeling of plant N-uptake yields the better results. Most models for mineralization use arbitrary approaches rather than empirical ones. Although only approximate estimates of N mineralisation were at hand, the models generally behave expectedly poor. Only one model-DAISY-out of 16 involved in the comparison uses an explicit microbial biomass sub-model including microbial growth, decline and maintenance terms. So DAISY is the only model coupling C and N cycles. But what is true for an individual model describing the C and N transformation of a lab incubation experiment seems to be valid for most of the complex simulation work on the C and N regimes: this model was said to be overparameterized with respect to the available data. 相似文献

Efficient plant regeneration via somatic embryogenesis has been developed in chickpea cultivar C235. Leaf explants, on MS medium supplemented with 1.25 mg/l 2,4-D and 0.25 mg/l kinetin, yielded somatic embryos with high efficiency during dark incubation. MS medium supplemented with B5 vitamins, 0.125 mg/l IBA and 2 mg/l BAP was found suitable for embryo maturation. The well formed embryos germinated into plantlets on basal B5 medium supplemented with 0.25 mg/l BAP. Further development into healthy plantlets was obtained on basal B5 medium. A method has been devised to differentiate viable and nonviable bacterial spores. “Germination-like” changes are initiated in spores with performic acid and lysozyme. The germinated spores are stained with aqueous acridine orange, a fluorescent dye. Nonviable spores fluoresce lemon-green and viable spores orange-red. It is proposed that with the use of a membrane filter resistant to performic acid and lysozyme, the method may be used for spore enumeration in foods in about 4 hr compared to conventional plating methods, which usually require up to 72 hr. 相似文献

The whole plant of Swertia hookeri, collected at flowering has been shown to contain two tri- and nine tetraoxygenated free, glucosyloxy, and stearyl ester xanthones and one flavonol stearyl ester. Among these, three are previously unreported in nature and one was known previously only as a synthetic compound. The xanthones are based on 1,3,5,-, 1,3,5,8- and 1,3,7,8-oxygenated systems with the middle oxygenation pattern predominating. The two ester compounds appeared only at the flowering stage. The fatty acid composition of the total and polar lipid fractions of Choanephora cucurbitarum grown under different cultural conditions were analyzed by thin-layer and gas-liquid chromatography. It was observed that temperature, age, pH, and light influenced the degree of unsaturation, this being due mainly to changes in the gamma-linolenic acid concentration. The conditions used in this study did not alter the qualitative profile of fatty acids normally present in the organism. Neither did these conditions stimulate the production of further long-chain fatty acids (C20-C26) beyond gamma-linolenic acid (C18:3) as reported earlier using growth media containing glutamic acid. The fatty acid pattern of lipid fractions though the same qualitatively, differed quantitatively. The polar lipid fractions, phosphatidyl choline, phosphatidyl ethanolamine, and diphosphatidyl glycerol showed an appreciable variation in gamma-linolenic acid content under different cultural conditions. The degree of unsaturation of the various lipid fractions decreased with increases in temperature, light intensity, and pH, but within each treatment the same pattern of decreasing degree of unsaturation with increasing age was observed. Coronary artery disease (CAD) affects Indians 5–6 years earlier than in the west, is diffuse and malignant, and poses a heavy burden on India’s developing economy. Traditional risk factors have failed to explain this high incidence of premature CAD and hence this study investigated the association of two novel risk biomarkers, cystatin C and small dense LDL (sdLDL) with the presence and severity of CAD. Cystatin C and sdLDL were estimated in 204 CAD patients ≤45 years of age and compared with 161 age-matched healthy controls. The traditional lipid profile parameters, i.e., cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides, apolipoproteins A1 and B, and Lp(a) were also measured in both groups. Cystatin C was significantly raised and mean LDL particle size significantly reduced in CAD patients as compared to controls. 62.7 % of CAD patients showed pattern B while 37.3 % patients showed pattern A. Of the traditional lipid tests, only HDL and apolipoprotein A1 showed a significant decrease in the CAD group. sdLDL was significantly associated with the severity of CAD, while cystatin C was not. Both cystatin C and sdLDL emerged as independent risk factors, however, of the two, sdLDL was a more sensitive predictor of CAD events. Cystatin C and mean LDL particle size are significantly and independently associated with the presence of CAD events in patients ≤45 years with normal kidney function. Hence, these novel risk biomarkers can be useful tools in reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with CAD in the productive Indian workforce. 相似文献
