Soil organic carbon (SOC) up to 1 m depth originates from contemporary vegetation cover dating from past millennia. Deforestation and reforestation with economically important species is influencing soil carbon sequestration. An attempt has been made in this study to evaluate the impact of vegetation cover change (due to replacement of natural heterogeneous cover by teak and bamboo) on SOC using carbon isotopes (δ13C, 14C) in a tropical system (India). A litter decomposition study was carried out to understand the impact of differences in vegetation characteristics (specifically of leaves) on decomposition. Both experiments were carried out to look at the impact of changes in vegetation characteristics (specifically of leaves) on litter decomposition, and how these influence near term litter decomposition rates (k values) and long-term SOC content of the soil system beneath. Leaves of teak, bamboo and eight other species were selected for this study. The proportion of structural carbohydrates (lignin and cellulose) in leaves significantly (at 5 % level) influenced k values. The SOC and carbon isotope data collected in this study indicate that C3 vegetation cover in the study area could be contemporary and dominant for the past few centuries. This can be extended up to ~2,200 years from the recorded 14C values of teak cover. The study confirms that k values of leaf litter influence SOC present beneath the vegetation cover at the decadal/century time scale.  相似文献

Almost all metabolic processes in an organism alternate through high and low activity phases with a regular periodicity of nearly 24h. These daily/diel variations are governed by factors such as light, weather conditions, availability of food or predator activity. The immune system in fish is expected to follow the same routine based on external cues from the environment which it lives. The present study was carried out to investigate such daily/diel variations in selected immune parameters such as serum lysozyme and peroxidases activity, total serum globulin level and peripheral blood leukocyte count in Oreochromis mossambicus. The fish were maintained in semi natural condition (i.e.12L:12D). The results showed significant rise in serum peroxidases and lysozyme between 0200 h and 0600 h of the day and serum cortisol exhibited elevated level between 2200 h and 0600 h. Total serum globulin exhibited peak concentration from 1400 h to 1800 h. Thus suggesting the possibility of rhythmic functioning of immune system in O. mossambicus.  相似文献

Protein prenylation is a posttranslational modification that is indispensable for translocation of membrane GTPases like Ras, Rho, Ras etc. Proteins of Ras family undergo farnesylation by FTase while Rho family goes through geranylgeranylation by GGTase1. There is only an infinitesimal difference in signal recognition between FTase and GGTase1. FTase inhibitors mostly end up selecting the cells with mutated Ras proteins that have acquired affinity towards GGTase1 in cancer microcosms. Therefore, it is of interest to identify GGTase1 and FTase dual inhibitors using the docking tool AutoDock Vina. Docking data show that curcumin (from turmeric) has higher binding affinity to GGTase1 than that of established peptidomimetic GGTase1 inhibitors (GGTI) such as GGTI-297, GGTI-298, CHEMBL525185. Curcumin also interacts with FTase with binding energy comparable to co-crystalized compound 2-[3-(3-ethyl-1-methyl-2-oxo-azepan-3-yl)-phenoxy]-4-[1-amino-1-(1-methyl-1h-imidizol-5-yl)-ethyl]-benzonitrile (BNE). The docked complex was further simulated for 10 ns using molecular dynamics simulation for stability. Thus, the molecular basis for curcumin binding to GGTase1 and FTase is reported.  相似文献

The effect of tourism on the distribution of larval blackflies during three different seasons of Palni hills was investigated.Six streams were selected(Kumbakkarai,Moolayar,Kurusedi,Silver cascade Pampar and Guntar) for this study,of which, three streams(Silver cascade Pampar and Guntar) were in peak of Palni hills(Kodaikanal town areas) and easy access to the tourists. The remaining three streams(Kumbakkarai,Moolayar and Kurusedi) were in downhill areas. The physico-chemical and stream parameters analyses indicated that the most tourist accessible site of Silver cas-cade stream had poor water quality and the predominant of larval blackfly population when compared to other sampling streams. The highest population of larval blackflies was observed during winter followed by summer and northeast monsoon.Since the effect of tourism causes pollution to streams, which in turn to promote the population of blackfly larvae and affect the other insect community in streams.    相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of water and hexane soluble fractions of the Indian medicinal plant, Solanum trilobatum on the nonspecific immune mechanisms and disease resistance in Oreochromis mossambicus. Fish were intraperitoneally injected with different doses of 0, 4, 40 or 400 mg kg(-1) body weight of water or hexane soluble fraction. The nonspecific immune mechanisms were assessed in terms of serum lysozyme activity, reactive oxygen species production and reactive nitrogen species production by peripheral blood leucocytes. The functional immunity in terms of percentage mortality and Relative Percent Survival (RPS) was assessed by a challenge with live Aeromonas hydrophila. Almost all the doses of both water and hexane soluble fractions enhanced the serum lysozyme activity. All the doses of water soluble fraction significantly enhanced the ROS production on most of the days tested. In hexane soluble fraction treated groups, the enhancement in the ROS production was observed at least on 2 days. All the doses of water soluble fraction significantly enhanced the production of RNS only on one day. The RNS production was enhanced significantly only in the group treated with 40 mg kg(-1) of hexane fraction. The leaf fraction administration preceding the challenge with live A. hydrophila, decreased the percentage mortality in the experimental group with the consequent increase in RPS values. This preliminary study indicates that S. trilobatum could be used to promote the health status of fish in intensive finfish aquaculture.  相似文献

Various 2-(sub)-3-fluoro/nitro-5,12-dihydro-5-oxobenzothiazolo[3,2-a]quinoline-6-carboxylic acid derivatives were synthesized from 2-aminothiophenol by a five-step reaction, evaluated for in-vitro and in-vivo antimycobacterial activities against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv (MTB), multi-drug resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MDR-TB), and Mycobacterium smegmatis (MC2), and also tested for the ability to inhibit the supercoiling activity of DNA gyrase from M. smegmatis. Among the thirty-four synthesized compounds, 2-(3-(diethylcarbamoyl)piperidin-1-yl)-)-3-fluoro-5,12-dihydro-5-oxobenzothiazolo[3,2-a]quinoline-6-carboxylic acid (7l) was found to be the most active compound in vitro with MIC of 0.18 and 0.08 microM against MTB and MTR-TB, respectively. Compound 7l was found to be 2 and 570 times more potent than isoniazid against MTB and MDR-TB, respectively. In the in-vivo animal model 7l decreased the bacterial load in lung and spleen tissues with 2.78 and 3.12-log10 protections, respectively, at the dose of 50 mg/kg body weight.  相似文献

Two new black fly species, Simulium (Simulium) pothigaiense sp. n. and Simulium (Simulium) valparaiense sp. n., are described based on females, males, pupae and larvae. Simulium (Simulium) pothigaiense sp. n. is characterized by a claw simple without subbasal tooth and the base of radial vein with hair tuft in the females, maxillary palp with small sensory vesicle in the males, pupal gill with 10 short slender filaments and very short common basal stalk in the pupae and 5 hypostomal bristles per side lying parallel to lateral margin in the larvae. Simulium (Simulium) valparaiense sp. n. is characterized by hind basitarsus 6.6 times as long as its greatest width and claw with small distinct subbasal tooth in the females, gonostyle in medial view 2.3 times longer than coxite in the males, common basal stalk of pupal gill 0.31 times as long as interspiracular trunk, and larval thoracic and abdominal cuticle with pair of dorsolateral protuberances. Taxonomic notes are given to distinguish these two new species from closely related species. www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:7285F6BC-607D-4F76-B6EE-9CAC67CDE651  相似文献
