A detailed study of the variation in productivity across a diversity gradient in an experimental Mediterranean grassland examines the effects of a dominant perennial grass species upon the overall diversity–productivity relationship. The experiment took place at the Greek site of the European-wide BIODEPTH programme. The experimental design is characterized by the use of a number of communities containing annuals and perennials within the total set of manipulated plots. The main results are: 1) a log-linear relationship between diversity and productivity exists in Mediterranean grasslands synthesized by annuals only, 2) in mixed communities where multiple growth forms coexist, the performance of a dominant or keystone species may reverse or hide the diversity–productivity pattern of a functional or growth form group of species taken separately, and 3) the introduction of the dominant grass in the low-diversity mixtures creates an 'inverted' sampling effect which can produce as an artefact a constant productivity response across the diversity gradient.  相似文献

Objective

Patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) with hippocampal sclerosis (HS) have diffuse subtle gray matter (GM) atrophy detectable by MRI quantification analyses. However, it is not clear whether the etiology and seizure frequency are associated with this atrophy. We aimed to evaluate the occurrence of GM atrophy and the influence of seizure frequency in patients with TLE and either normal MRI (TLE-NL) or MRI signs of HS (TLE-HS).

Methods

We evaluated a group of 172 consecutive patients with unilateral TLE-HS or TLE-NL as defined by hippocampal volumetry and signal quantification (122 TLE-HS and 50 TLE-NL) plus a group of 82 healthy individuals. Voxel-based morphometry was performed with VBM8/SPM8 in 3T MRIs. Patients with up to three complex partial seizures and no generalized tonic-clonic seizures in the previous year were considered to have infrequent seizures. Those who did not fulfill these criteria were considered to have frequent seizures.

Results

Patients with TLE-HS had more pronounced GM atrophy, including the ipsilateral mesial temporal structures, temporal lobe, bilateral thalami and pre/post-central gyri. Patients with TLE-NL had more subtle GM atrophy, including the ipsilateral orbitofrontal cortex, bilateral thalami and pre/post-central gyri. Both TLE-HS and TLE-NL showed increased GM volume in the contralateral pons. TLE-HS patients with frequent seizures had more pronounced GM atrophy in extra-temporal regions than TLE-HS with infrequent seizures. Patients with TLE-NL and infrequent seizures had no detectable GM atrophy. In both TLE-HS and TLE-NL, the duration of epilepsy correlated with GM atrophy in extra-hippocampal regions.

Conclusion

Although a diffuse network GM atrophy occurs in both TLE-HS and TLE-NL, this is strikingly more evident in TLE-HS and in patients with frequent seizures. These findings suggest that neocortical atrophy in TLE is related to the ongoing seizures and epilepsy duration, while thalamic atrophy is more probably related to the original epileptogenic process.  相似文献

Understanding the influence of environmental variation on the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning is of theoretical and practical interest. We predicted that the strength of this relationship should increase with available biotope space (the physical space associated with a species’ niche) due to increased niche complementarity between species. In this study, biotope space specifically refers to soil volume which is associated with the niche dimension of nutrient acquisition. We tested our prediction by growing plant communities on a gradient of increasing soil depth and volume, offering increased rooting space to species. Our results provide support for a linear increase of the magnitude of positive biodiversity effects on above‐ and belowground community biomass with increasing biotope space. This increase was caused by complementarity effects between species. Soil erosion may thus reduce intercropping benefits.  相似文献

This paper reports the findings of a short-term natural invasibility field study in constructed Mediterranean herbaceous communities of varying diversities, under a fire treatment. Three components of invasibility, i.e. species richness, density and biomass of invaders, have been monitored in burnt and unburnt experimental plots with resident diversity ranging from monocultures to 18-species mixtures. In general, species richness, density and biomass of invaders decreased significantly with the increase of resident species richness. Furthermore, the density and biomass of invading species were significantly influenced by the species composition of resident communities. Although aboveground biomass, leaf area index, canopy height and percent bare ground of the resident communities explained a significant part of the variation in the success of invading species, these covariates did not fully explain the effects of resident species richness. Fire mainly influenced invasibility via soil nutrient levels. The effect of fire on observed invasibility patterns seems to be less important than the effects of resident species richness. Our results demonstrate the importance of species richness and composition in controlling the initial stages of plant invasions in Mediterranean grasslands but that there was a lack of interaction with the effects of fire disturbance.  相似文献

Introduction

Development of cell therapies for repairing the intervertebral disc is limited by the lack of a source of healthy human disc cells. Stem cells, particularly mesenchymal stem cells, are seen as a potential source but differentiation strategies are limited by the lack of specific markers that can distinguish disc cells from articular chondrocytes.  相似文献

Alyssum lesbiacum is a well-established Ni hyperaccumulator, endemic to serpentine soils of Lesbos Island (Greece). A total of 95 individuals were collected from 17 plots encompassing the only four large populations of this species. ISSR (Inter-simple sequence repeat) markers were used to assess genetic diversity and population structure of A. lesbiacum to provide initial guidance for the development of successful management and conservation measures. A total of ten primers produced 82 bands, 96.34 % being polymorphic. The largest part of total diversity was found within populations, rather than among them. AMOVA analysis partitioned the largest part of diversity within plots (66 %), while 15 % contained among plots within populations and 19 % among populations. Principal coordinates analysis along with dendrogram based on genetic distances among populations showed a high degree of genetic differentiation of the isolated population Loutra. At a smaller scale, distance was not the most significant factor influencing the patterns of genetic diversity, but topography, ecosystem types and connectivity through streams. According to our results, conservation efforts should be organized at the level of watersheds and ecosystem types, considering them as management units. For ex situ conservation and restoration, seed samplings should be representative of the different habitats and watersheds as well as the patches of large and small populations while keeping the east population of Loutra separate from the other three central populations, to avoid any loss of genetic diversity and to preserve the character of the local adapted populations.  相似文献

Cachexia is a multifactorial syndrome characterized by skeletal muscle loss, with or without adipose atrophy, irreversible through nutritional support, in the context of systemic inflammation and metabolic disorders. It is mediated by inflammatory reaction and affects almost 50% of all cancer patients, due to prominent systemic inflammation associated with the disease. The comprehension of the molecular mechanisms that are implicated in cancer cachexia sheds light on its pathogenesis and lays the foundations for the discovery of new therapeutic targets and biomarkers. Recently, ncRNAs, like microRNAs as well as lncRNAs and circRNAs seem to regulate pathways that are implicated in cancer cachexia pathogenesis, as it has been observed in animal models and in cancer cachexia patients, highlighting their therapeutic potential. Moreover, increasing evidence highlights the involvement of circulating and exosomal ncRNAs in the activation and maintenance of systemic inflammation in cancer and cancer-associated cachexia. In that context, the present review focuses on the clinical significance of ncRNAs in cancer-associated cachexia.  相似文献
