Heat generation in laser irradiated tissue   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Many medical applications involving lasers rely upon the generation of heat within the tissue for the desired therapeutic effect. Determination of the absorbed light energy in tissue is difficult in many cases. Although UV wavelengths of the excimer laser and 10.6 microns wavelength of the CO2 laser are absorbed within the first 20 microns of soft tissue, visible and near infrared wavelengths are scattered as well as absorbed. Typically, multiple scattering is a significant factor in the distribution of light in tissue and the resulting heat source term. An improved model is presented for estimating heat generation due to the absorption of a collimated (axisymmetric) laser beam and scattered light at each point r and z in tissue. Heat generated within tissue is a function of the laser power, the shape and size of the incident beam and the optical properties of the tissue at the irradiation wavelength. Key to the calculation of heat source strength is accurate estimation of the light distribution. Methods for experimentally determining the optical parameters of tissue are discussed in the context of the improved model.  相似文献

The photoinduced reaction cycle of bacteriorhodopsin (BR) has been studied by means of a recently developed picosecond infrared spectroscopic method at ambient temperature. BR - K difference spectra between 1560 and 1700 cm-1 have been recorded at delay times from 100 ps to 14 ns. The spectrum remains unchanged during this period. The negative difference OD band at 1660 cm-1 indicates the peptide backbone responds within 50 ps. A survey in the region of carboxylic side chain absorption around 1740 cm-1 reveals that perturbations of those groups, present in low-temperature FTIR spectra, are not observable within 10 ns, suggesting a slow conformational change.  相似文献

The nature of replication origins in eukaryotic chromosomes has been examined in some detail only in yeast, Drosophila, and mammalian cells. We have used highly synchronous cultures of plasmodia of the myxomycete Physarum and two-dimensional agarose gel electrophoresis to examine replication of two developmentally controlled, early replicated genes over time in S-phase. A single, discrete origin of replication was found within 4.8 kb of the LAV1-5 gene, which encodes a homolog of profilin. In contrast, the LAV1-2 gene appears to be surrounded by several origins. Two origins were identified within a 15 kb chromosomal domain and appear to be inefficiently used. Replication forks collide at preferred sites within this domain. These terminating structures are long lived, persisting for at least 2 h of the 3 h S-phase. Analysis of restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) within the LAV1-2 domain indicates that replication of alleles on different parental chromosomes is a highly coordinated process. Our studies of the these two early replicated, plasmodium-specific genes indicate that both a fixed, narrow origin region and a broader zone containing two closely spaced origins of DNA replication occur in Physarum.  相似文献

The modulation of microvascular blood flow by vasomotion in the individual vessels of a simple vascular network was simulated by means of a network thermodynamic model. The flow is driven under a pulsating pressure through two arcades of branching vasoactive arterioles into a passive resistance representing the capillary and venular beds. Each vessel was assumed to have the capability of decreasing rhythmically the local diameter over a short section by a specified fraction of the maximum value and to change the average diameter along its total length in response to alterations in intraluminal pressure. Blood was assumed to exhibit a simple linear viscous flow resistance. Alterations in flow rate and distribution through the network were determined as a function of the magnitude and frequency of vasomotion within the individual arterioles supplying blood to the microvascular bed. Specific cases are shown to illustrate how blood flow can be influenced by the patterns of vasomotion within the network.  相似文献

Corolla chirality, the pinwheel arrangement of petals within a flower, is found throughout the core eudicots. In 15 families, different chiral type flowers (i.e., right or left rotated corolla) exist on the same plant, and this condition is referred to as unfixed/enantiomorphic corolla chirality. There are no investigations on the significance of unfixed floral chirality on directed pollen movement even though analogous mirror image floral designs, for example, enantiostyly, has evolved in response to selection to direct pollinator and pollen movement. Here, we examine the role of corolla chirality on directing pollen transfer, pollinator behavior, and its potential influence on disassortative mating. We quantified pollen transfer and pollinator behavior and movement for both right and left rotated flowers in two populations of Hypericum perforatum. In addition, we quantified the number of right and left rotated flowers at the individual level. Pollinators were indifferent to corolla chirality resulting in no difference in pollen deposition between right and left flowers. Corolla chirality had no effect on pollinator and pollen movement between and within chiral morphs. Unlike other mirror image floral designs, corolla chirality appears to play no role in promoting disassortative mating in this species.  相似文献
