ProjectOmeprazole is one of the most frequently prescribed drugs in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It increases the gastric pH and this in turn may change the intestinal absorption of trace elements. This study was conducted to assess the effects of omeprazole consumption on the serum level of trace elements.ProceduresThe studied subjects were selected from the list of patients referred to the gastroenterology department of 5 Azar hospital in Golestan province of Iran for whom omeprazole was prescribed by a gastroenterologist. Blood samples were obtained before (phase I) and after an eight-week period (phase II) of omeprazole consumption. Serum levels of trace elements were assessed by the photometric method.ResultsSixty seven patients were recruited of whom, 35.82% were males. There was no significant difference in serum levels of Fe, P, Ca and Cu between phases I and II. Serum concentration of Zn was significantly lower in phase II than I (P = 0.02). The proportion of male patients with low Zn levels was significantly higher in phase II (50%) than I (16.7%) (P = 0.01). We found no significant difference in the proportion of female patients with low Zn levels between phase I (37.2%) and phase II (27.9%).ConclusionsWe found no significant reduction in serum levels of Fe, P, Ca and Cu in phase II. However, our results showed that serum level of Zn was significantly lower after omeprazole consumption in males. So, nutritional supplement of Zn should be considered in male patients treated with omeprazole.  相似文献

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is the most common cause of death in COVID-19 patients. The cytokine storm is the main driver of the severity and magnitude of ARDS. Placenta-derived decidua stromal cells (DSCs) have a stronger immunosuppressive effect than other sources of mesenchymal stromal cells. Safety and efficacy study included 10 patients with a median age of 50 (range 14–68) years with COVID-19-induced ARDS. DSCs were administered 1–2 times at a dose of 1 × 106/kg. End points were safety and efficacy by survival, oxygenation and effects on levels of cytokines. Oxygenation levels increased from a median of 80.5% (range 69–88) to 95% (range 78–99) (p = 0.012), and pulmonary infiltrates disappeared in all patients. Levels of IL-6 decreased from a median of 69.3 (range 35.0–253.4) to 11 (range 4.0–38.3) pg/ml (p = 0.018), and CRP decreased from 69 (range 5–169) to 6 (range 2–31) mg/ml (p = 0.028). Two patients died, one of a myocardial infarction and the other of multiple organ failure, diagnosed before the DSC therapy. The other patients recovered and left the intensive care unit (ICU) within a median of 6 (range 3–12) days. DSC therapy is safe and capable of improving oxygenation, decreasing inflammatory cytokine level and clearing pulmonary infiltrates in patients with COVID-19.  相似文献

The 32-base pair deletion on the C–C chemokine receptor 5 gene (CCR5-delta32) is known as a protective allele against immune system disorders. We have studied this variation in Iranian multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and healthy controls. DNA samples were prepared from the whole blood of 254 patients with MS and 380 healthy controls. We amplified the fragment including the CCR5-delta32 polymorphism and visualized the products in a documentation system after agarose gel electrophoresis. Data were analysed using one-way ANOVA and Fisher’s exact tests with SPSS-v13 and STATA-v8 software. The delta32 allele was more frequent in MS patients when compared with controls (OR = 2.3, P < 0.0001). Also, we found a significant difference in the frequency of the delta32/delta32 genotype among patients and controls (OR = 7.4, P < 0.001). The mean age at onset and progression index was not significantly different between patients with various genotypes. According to our study, the delta32 allele of the CCR5 gene might be a predisposing factor for MS development in the Iranian population. However, there were no associations between this polymorphism and the clinical course of the disease in this study.  相似文献

The present study was carried out in order to evaluate the promoting effect of a static magnetic field (SMF) on drought tolerance and medicinal properties in Hyssopus officinalis. In the current work, the effect of seed priming with SMF (45, 90, 200, and 250 mT for 5 min) was investigated in 60-day-old hyssop (H. officinalis) plants that were irrigated every 8 days. The assessments consisted of total dry mass, membrane integrity, photosynthetic pigment concentrations, polyphenol content, antioxidant enzyme activities, and antioxidant capacity. Compared with exclusively water stress, magnetopriming, particularly at 200 mT, significantly altered these parameters in the grown plants. At this intensity, the level of total dry mass, total chlorophyll, and polyphenol content increased by 94%, 2.5- and 7.7-fold, respectively. Also, the level of electrolyte leakage and malondialdehyde decreased by 35% and 33%. The reducing power, DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrozyl), and superoxide anion-scavenging activities were highly augmented as well. Magnetopriming at 200 mT increased catalase (+92%) and ascorbate peroxidase (+2.3-fold) activities. However, the highest activity of guaiacol peroxidase was recorded at 90 mT. Generally, the present study illustrated the positive effect of magnetopriming (200 mT) on improvement of drought tolerance in H. officinalis through protection of cellular membrane integrity, maintenance of photosynthetic pigment content, and alternation of antioxidant enzyme activities. Furthermore, the data showed this treatment (200 mT) not only had no negative effect on medicinal properties of H. officinalis, but also improved it via increasing total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity. The effects of ionic stress on the physiology and gene expression of two rice genotypes (IR4630 and IR15324) that differ in salt tolerance, were investigated by evaluating changes in the biomass, Na+ and K+ concentrations and applying the cDNA-AFLP technique to highlight changes in gene expression. Over 8 days of salinisation, the effect of NaCl on the reduction of biomass (dry weight) was apparent from 24 h after salinisation (the first time point), indicating that the consequences of the build up of Na+ (and Cl-) in the leaves of both lines was rapid. Furthermore, root growth of IR15324 was much more sensitive to salt than that of IR4630 (the reduction in root dry weight compared to non-salinised plants was three times greater in IR15324 than IR4630). The two rice lines also differed in their Na+ accumulation in saline conditions, a difference that was more marked in the shoots, particularly at the final harvest, than in the roots. Under salt stress, the K+ content (µmol/shoot) increased over four successive harvests (24, 48, 96, 192 h) in both lines, but was always greater in IR4630 than in IR15324: differences in Na+/K+ ratio appear to be an important determinant of salt tolerance in rice. To separate osmotic from ionic effects of salt, mannitol was applied as a non-ionic osmoticum at an osmotic potential estimated to be equivalent to 50 mM NaCl. Messenger RNA was sampled at 0.5, 6, 24, 48 and 192 hours after salinisation. Several products (AFLP-bands) were detected, which were upregulated in the response to ionic effects of salt in the tolerant line (IR4630) and not expressed in the sensitive line (IR15324). Bioinformatic analysis indicated three of these AFLP-bands have a high-degree of sequence similarity with the genes encoding a proline rich protein, senescence associated protein and heat-shock protein. The data are novel in that they differentially highlight changes induced by the ionic rather than osmotic effects of salt and in a tolerant rather than a sensitive genotype. The possible roles of the products of these genes are discussed.  相似文献

ProjectGolestan province, located in northeast of Iran, has been known as a high risk area for esophageal cancer (EC). This study was conducted to assess the relationship between soils selenium (Se) level and development of EC in this region.ProceduresIn this ecological study, 135 blocks were identified in Golestan province based on geographical altitude and longitude on the map. One soil sample was collected from the center of each block. Then we investigated Se concentration in soil samples by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Statistical analysis was performed by the Pearson correlation test and Student t-tests. P-values of less than 0.05 were considered as significant.ResultsThe mean±SD of soils Se level in Golestan province was 3.7±1.61 mg/kg. There was a positive correlation between soils Se level and EC rates in this area (P=0.03) (Pearson correlation coefficient=0.19). Soils Se concentration was significantly higher in high (4.13 mg/kg) than in the low (3.39 mg/kg) EC rate areas (P=0.01).ConclusionsWe found high soils Se concentration and a significant positive relationship between soils Se level and EC rate in Golestan province of Iran. So, high soils Se level may play a possible role in developing EC in this area, specifically in Turkmensahra (very high EC rates).  相似文献

Introduction

In this study, we aimed to investigate the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within two genes involved in the NF-κB cascade (GPR177 and MAP3K14) and bone mineral density (BMD) assessed at different skeletal sites, radial geometric parameters and bone turnover.

Methods

Ten GPR177 SNPs previously associated with BMD with genome-wide significance and twelve tag SNPs (r2≥0.8) within MAP3K14 (±10 kb) were genotyped in 2359 men aged 40–79 years recruited from 8 centres for participation in the European Male Aging Study (EMAS). Measurement of bone turnover markers (PINP and CTX-I) in the serum and quantitative ultrasound (QUS) at the calcaneus were performed in all centres. Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), at the lumbar spine and hip, and peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT), at the distal and midshaft radius, were performed in a subsample (2 centres). Linear regression was used to test for association between the SNPs and bone measures under an additive genetic model adjusting for study centre.

Results

We validated the associations between SNPs in GPR177 and BMDa previously reported and also observed evidence of pleiotrophic effects on density and geometry. Rs2772300 in GPR177 was associated with increased total hip and LS BMDa, increased total and cortical vBMD at the radius and increased cortical area, thickness and stress strain index. We also found evidence of association with BMDa, vBMD, geometric parameters and CTX-I for SNPs in MAP3K14. None of the GPR177 and MAP3K14 SNPs were associated with calcaneal estimated BMD measured by QUS.

Conclusion

Our findings suggest that SNPs in GPR177 and MAP3K14 involved in the NF-κB signalling pathway influence bone mineral density, geometry and turnover in a population-based cohort of middle aged and elderly men. This adds to the understanding of the role of genetic variation in this pathway in determining bone health.  相似文献

Background: Golestan province in northeastern Iran has been known as a high-risk area for esophageal cancer (EC). This study was conducted to assess aflatoxin (AF) contamination of wheat flour (WF) samples in high and low EC-risk areas of Golestan province. Methods: Four WF samples were collected randomly from each of 25 active silos throughout the province in 2009. The levels of AFs were measured using the High-performance liquid chromatography method. Using the data of EC rates obtained from Golestan population-based cancer registry, the province was divided into high and low risk areas for EC. Student t-test and multivariate regression analysis were used to compare the levels of aflatoxins as well as the condition of silos between the two areas. Results: One hundred WF samples were collected. The mean levels of total aflatoxin and aflatoxin B1 was 1.99 and 0.53 ng g?1, respectively. The levels of total AF (p = 0.03), AFG2 (p = 0.02) and AFB1 (p = 0.003) were significantly higher in samples obtained from high risk area. Multivariate regression analysis showed that humidity of silo was the most important source of difference between silos of the two areas (p = 0.04). Conclusion: We found a positive relationship between AF level of WF samples and the risk of EC. So, AF contamination may be a possible risk factor for EC in our region. We also found that humidity of silos was the most important determinant of AF contamination of WF. Intensive control of silos conditions including humidity and temperature are needed especially in high EC-risk areas.  相似文献

Enzymatic decolorization of reactive blue 221 (RB221) using laccase was investigated in a dual-chamber microbial fuel cell (MFC). Suspended laccase was used in the cathode chamber in the absence of any mediators in order to decolorize RB221 and also improve oxygen reduction reaction in the cathode. Molasses was utilized as low cost and high strength energy source in the anode chamber. The capability of MFC for simultaneous molasses and dye removal was investigated. A decolorization efficiency of 87% was achieved in the cathode chamber and 84% COD removal for molasses was observed in the anode chamber. Laccase could catalyze the removal of RB221 and had positive effect on MFC performance as well. Maximum power density increased about 30% when enzymatic decolorization was performed in the cathode chamber.  相似文献
