Summary The conditions required for the production of a polylysine-coated gold (PL-G) complex, which shows optimal sensitivity for the demonstration of tissue anionic sites, expressed under different conditions of pH have been investigated. Problems encountered with this complex have been compared with those found with other methods of conjugation of polylysine to colloidal gold. The performance of a bovine serum albumin (BSA)-stabilized PL-G complex was examined against other PL-G conjugates, including complexes that are commercially available, for the detection of heterogeneous glomerular anionic site populations, expressed at pH 2.5 and pH 7.0. 相似文献

The thermal sensitivity of scope for activity was studied in the Antarctic nototheniid fish Pagothenia borchgrevinki. The scope for activity of P. borchgrevinki at 0°C was 189 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 (factorial scope 6.8) which is similar to that of temperate and tropical species at their environmental temperatures, providing no evidence for metabolic cold adaptation of maximum activity. The scope for activity increased to a maximum value of 266 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 (factorial scope 8.3) at 3°C and then decreased from 3 to 6°C. The thermal sensitivity of critical swimming speed was also investigated and followed a similar pattern to aerobic scope for activity, suggesting oxygen limitation of aerobic performance. Oxygen consumption rates and ventilation frequencies were monitored for 24 h after the swimming challenge and the recovery of both parameters to resting levels was rapid and independent of temperature. 相似文献

A simple linear-operator model both describes and predicts the dynamics of choice that may underlie the matching relation. We measured inter-food choice within components of a schedule that presented seven different pairs of concurrent variable-interval schedules for 12 food deliveries each with no signals indicating which pair was in force. This measure of local choice was accurately described and predicted as obtained reinforcer sequences shifted it to favor one alternative or the other. The effect of a changeover delay was reflected in one parameter, the asymptote, whereas the effect of a difference in overall rate of food delivery was reflected in the other parameter, rate of approach to the asymptote. Summary Microorganisms were able to remove hydrocarbons (pentane and isobutane) from air by biological action in a columnar bioreactor with ceramic packing. The reactor was operated in a liquid continuous mode with gas recirculation and a slow addition of the organic-containing air. After a period of acclimation, the reactor has operated for 12 months with only pentane and isobutane as carbon sources. The gaseous hydrocarbons have been degraded throughout this period. The hydrocarbon removal rates measured between 1 and 2 g h–1 m–3. The flora and fauna of Europe are linked by a common biogeographic history, most recently the Pleistocene glaciations that restricted the range of most species to southern refugial populations. Changes in population size and migration, as well as selection, have all left a signature on the genetic differentiation. Thus, three paradigms of postglacial recolonization have been described, inferred from the patterns of DNA differentiation. Yet some species, especially wide-ranging carnivores, exhibit little population structuring between the proposed refugia, although relatively few have been studied due to the difficulty of obtaining samples. Therefore, we investigated mitochondrial variation in pine martens, Martes martes, in order to understand the extent to which they were affected by glacial cycles, and compared the results with an analysis of sequences from polecats, Mustela putorius. A general lack of ancient lineages, and a mismatch distribution that is consistent with an expanding population, is evidence that the present-day M. martes and Mu. putorius in central and northern Europe colonized from a single European refugium following a recent glaciation.
